Perfect just means 'until' whether it's past, present or future. Some verbs can be both active and stative depending on context. Continuous perfect could include evidence. I'm loving it...😒 I've been loving you... too long, to stop now. Thanks to MacDonalds and Otis Redding. 😀

'at the beginning' is never used without 'of'. You must always say 'at the beginning of time, there was .....' If there's no 'of', you must change 'at' to 'in': In the beginning, there was ...'

But what if the 'for' is the brother of 'during' and not of 'since'? In my life, I've lived for 3 years in Germany, for 1 year in Switzerland, for 6 months in Spain and for 20 years in France? This is not a state which continues. ( in your example of course there's the 'Now I live in Paris' which adds extra context. )

Isn't STATE / ACTION quite subjective depending on the speaker? ( natives don't have the time, knowledge or even the reflex to ask themselves this type of question but both occur interchangeably and subconsciously ) Someone who's involved in their job and loves it might say "I've been working here for 20 years" but someone stuck in a rut and bored might say "I've worked here for 20 years".. but I think that for native speakers a lot of this is happening under the radar and use of one form or another could be influenced by the way people around them speak or by what is spoken on the TV they watch or radio they listen to. A good example of this is how American English diverged away from British English when speakers of the latter found themselves in a minority and second language speakers of English were in the majority.
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish Жыл бұрын
It is indeed, and as you say natives know instinctively when they can treat an action verb as a state. In this lesson, I'm trying to guide non-natives on how to make that decision.

Yes, you can, especially with 'work'. I believe I give you some examples with 'work' in the latter part of the lesson (05:00 Other verbs like 'live').

You're welcome. No, they're not interchangeable: for + length of time: for 1 hour during + event: during the meeting

Thank you so much for your lesson! I'd like to ask you for some advice. What had I better say in the following sentences? I'm referring to (1) and (2). Thank you so much once again! A: I've changed job recently and I have been working very hard since then. What about you? B: I haven't done (haven't been doing) (1) anything exciting except for a new photography course. I've been attending it for six months. ------------------------------------------------------- A: I've been attending a photography course. B: What kind of subjects have you photographed (have been photographing) (2) so far? A: All kinds! But I've become fond of urban landscapes.

Hello Marco, You're welcome! Based on my lesson you've just watched, what do you think the correct answers are? I'd like to hear your answers first!

@@AngloLinkEnglish As a matter of fact, I find both options acceptable...In 2) I would prefer the simple form if the question sounded something like "How many subiects....(have you photographed so far?); if it were the case, the answer might be "Many kinds...". Unfortunately, I still have some doubts...Sorry! Would you help me, please? Thanks a lot!

Hello Marco, You're right for the second question: When you ask for or give the number of 'actions completed', you should use the Present Perfect: How many .... have you done ...? As for the first question, although, grammatically speaking, both answers are correct, it's uncommon to use the Present Perfect Continuous in the negative form because we don't really need to insist on the continuity of a 'non-action'. So, the correct answer is again: I haven't done anything ...

@@AngloLinkEnglish Oh, I see...This a very useful explanation of yours! Thanks a lot once again! Do you mean that in 2) both options are correct (have photographed/ have been photographing)?
