@@awesomegear3507 I don't really remember, I was so young when I learned to talk. I can tell you that we question some things though, like "why are they called scissors? If you separated them would one side be called a scissor?" Of course we never got an answer to these questions, I suspect because my parents didn't know either

My husband is canadian, a native speaker. And his favorite question is "where IS my glasses?". And the next frase would be "Oh there they ARE". He blows my mind 🤯 So I guess where are my glasses is correct, but in reality people sometimes don't follow the rules

These are patterns from the Slavic mother's tongue, very deeply rooted and hard to eradicate. I am trying to get rid of them while speaking, but once in a while I fall into the scheme again and translate word for word. It is very helpful when natives point these things out, or else the pattern will stay with us for ever. Unless one doesn't care, of course.
@RaufAbasquliyev
@RaufAbasquliyev Жыл бұрын
Pliers, glasses, tongs, pants etc. are plural in Russian as well. So, it's nothing to do with the Slavic patterns.
@Iscoileachme
@Iscoileachme Жыл бұрын
@@RaufAbasquliyev yes, but the mistake comes from using just one demonstrative pronoun ("это") for all situations, including plural nouns. It sounds natural to say "Это очки", " Это ножницы" etc while "Эти очки" is reinterpreted as the subject noun phrase "these glasses" and sounds off. So, in the end, it has everything to do with the patterns of Russian.

These words are always in plural. But sometimes some translators forget it. In a novel I recently read, translated from American English ("Corps et âme " by Frank Conroy) I found it amusing to see " DES pantalons " instead of "un pantalon"! I think that it must be a very hard job to translate a novel or any other written text, but I oftrn say in myself translators are supposed to avoid this kind of mistake. (And I suppose I've just made many ones in this comment ! But I'not à translator!) 22043OR2x

Everything's so clear when speaking about plural nouns that I cannot understand why anyone misunderstand it. Though, watching in this moment an add of a video of Cake saying to forget about grammar and only use everyday listening/speaking slang😒took me to the point of why people misunderstand correct English learning.
