13:30 The "blond" is to emphasize the idea of the French without origin So the sentence "you use too much wesh for a blond boy" is to support the sentence that comes after implying that the father of the young man is racist towards Arabs Which is ironic because the father being racist his son still uses Arab terms great reaction I laughed from the beginning to the end 😭🔥

Yeah, and the word "blondinet" here can be used to mean "not so tough guy", as the word "wesh" is widely used by people who try to show some sort of street credibility
@MissZoologica
@MissZoologica 3 жыл бұрын
Well, as French speaker I don't think "blond" defines a French guy without origin. A "blond(e)" is a man(woman) with blond hair, nothing more. When Orelsan said "tu dis trop de "wesh" pour un blondinet" (blondinet means "fragile blond hair guy", it sounds pejorative for an adult but it is used to talk about small children that are cute with their blond hair), he just means that he is a fragile european who wants to be "fashionable"/to have street or bad boy "style" using a term of Arabic origin that doesn't fit to him. Don't know if I am clear.

Using too much "wesh" for a blond means it's quite ironic to say this word when you're white and you live in a racist household. the word wesh is mainly used in the "hood" and the kid who says it too often, probably lives in a rich geographical area which is even more ironical. He basically wants to act like a thug, except he isn't one.

The Christian part is interesting. In French it's just a name but in English it have a religious meaning (in French, the Chistians is "les chrétiens", so that's different). So when you read it the English way, different meanings come to your mind when for us French, it doesn't. That's cool !

They're actually pretty good considering. This song is referencing French culture heavily though, which makes it impossible to accurately translate it without more precise descriptions. The only translation issue I have is for using the word "blond" instead of something like "blondie", which would have been more appropriate to the original word ("blondinet")'s meaning in French.

Since you listened to that one you should try and listen to "La famille, la famille" . Défaite de famille came with his third album and something like a year later he rereleased his album with new songs, and named ithis "version" of his album "Epilogue". "La famille, la famille" is one of those songs, and basically references this song the whole time. I don't know if it'd make for a good video as there's no music video for it and it doesn't slap hard, but I think it's nice to see how he reflects on it months later, especially since Orelsan's third album has Orelsan talking a LOT about his growth/life struggles, and La famille, la famille goes even further in that direction. Also the part about "wesh" and "blond" is because most north-africans aren't blond haired. A "blond" guy basically means "a white guy". What they're getting at is that a white boy is using a word of north-african origin/culture quite a lot, probably without having grown alongside, or shared things with such people. The next part attacks his father, Orelsan's uncle, for having a "problem with arabs". Clearly attacking his racism (widespread in French families still to this day, and echoing the stereotype of "the racist uncle who talks too much at family gatherings") Both go together and it's easier to understand if you read them both one after the other. Using "wesh" is no problem in itself, it's just youth slang at this point, but this cousin is basically showing off by using it+ talking about drugs/ building his image off of using the word. It's not really that deep of a bar but I guess explaining it fully on a societal level could be long so yeah, TLDR the kid's trying to act like a tough guy/cool weed guy because he thinks it's cool and a way to do that is to use that word. EDIT: it's worth pointing out that immigrants played a huge part in Rap culture in France, just like Black people did in the U.S., hence the connection between north-african culture and rap.

"wesh" is mostly used by Arabic ppl in France, or at least it comes from their culture and their is a huuuge problem of racism + racists ppl are obviously proud to be "pure frenchies" and most likely if they look pale, blond hair and blue eyes... At least that's the clichés Orelsan refers to in this sentence :)

@@larvaefriendlyproject1997 I know :) I'm actually French, we're talking about clichés only Plus, you'll see that on the south pple are "Mediterranean" type (dark hair, tan skin, brown eyes) in the north they are more likely aryans or pale skin and between North and South it's a mix but more represented by white persons. So if racists think that whites are better, what could be better than Aryan? (that's why our government helped nazis during WW2, but ppl don't like remember it). And lately, their's a racist politician who's gaining popularity, her name's Marine Le Pen, her credo is something like "La France aux français" (France belongs to French)... Go check her head, she and her political représentant is the cliché orelsan refers to in his song :)

8:12 ==> Yes he is looking too good as a women :D 10:41 ==> The translation here doesn't really add up. What he says is : “to take advantage of being with working-class people to be able to play boho”, referring to a lot of parisian hypocrites, well-off but dressing like the own less than they really do, and “hanging” with poorer people because it's good for their “image” (acting like they do care although they really don't) 10:56 ==> This joint, my friend, is called a “Tulip” ^^ 13:26 ==> What he is saying is like : “You're too white to use “wesh” that often !”. To adapt the translation, I would have said « Using too much “nigga” for a blonde guy ! ». It's not totally correct (because “wesh” cannot be taken as an insult, unlike “nigga”) but both words are strongly associated to an ethnic group, which is not the ethnic group of the guy who Orelsan is talking to. After that Orelsan says : “Since your dad can't bear Arabs, it's quite ironic” because “Wesh” is originally an Arabic word, massively used in France by Middle-Eastern and North African immigrant's children ;) But what seemed to bug you here was “FOR a blonde”. Is this construction incorrect in English ? By the way, the whole video has been shot with... a FUCKING IPHONE ! It's too bad you don't understand French, otherwise, I would have advised you to go and watch the “making of” of this video, It is very interesting. Maybe give it a try even though you won't get what they say : you'll see all the costumes and makeup, which is pretty entertaining (but you'll miss all the jokes, and hearing Orelsan talking about the life of the different characters or improvising line for/from them) :D Anyway, it's really interesting to see an English-speaker discovering a rapper like Orelsan, who is really all about the lyrics :) Hope my comment helped a little ! Peace ;)

Regarding the “wesh” line: he’s saying that the guy is using the word wesh (Algerian/Arabic) way too much for a blond (=white) guy that has a racist father (meaning the blond guy is most likely racist too). It also ties with cultural appropriation

You are overanalysing the "Christian" part. Christian is a common male name in France, like Christophe.
