Stromae loves to shake up minds, to denounce, to talk about harsh things with cheerful music. He likes to tell stories and put himself in the shoes of characters. Here he interprets the deceased woman, the son, the client, the passerby, the pimp... in a single song. The title is a play on words: "Fille de joie" is an old French term for "prostitute" and « fils de pute » (Son of a bitch) is an insult.
@synkodev2 жыл бұрын
Merci pour expliquer ça! J’apprend le français depuis peu de temp mais j’ai pas compris le titre jusqu’à maintenant
@hansotten69012 жыл бұрын
Each verse is a different person, the chorus is always the son. The first verse is her 'best customer', the second her pimp and the third a police officer (not a passerby)
@timaa.43792 жыл бұрын
I don't think the title is a combination of "Fille de joie" and "fils de pute" but rather he meant 'son of the night'. The focus is all on the son. He even said so in an interview.
@mpenziwamungu7312 жыл бұрын
@@timaa.4379 Of course it is. Maybe the translation in english is "son of the night" to avoid being too literal. But it is a combination between "fille de joie " literally "girl of joy " and "fils de pute " literally "son of a b*itch". So it's becomes " son of joy" to depict the women involved in prostitution in a positive way.
@JuJu-os8zc2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's it. And "Fils de joie" is a contraction of "Fille de joie" (hore in the 1800's) and "Fils de pute" (Litterally Son of a hore -> has become nowadays son of a bitch which is also an insult as everybody knows). It's wordplay.

The verses are the perspectives of three different people 1) the client 2) the pimp 3) the cop and the chorus is the child of the prostitute. Did you watch his explanation before the video was released? He explains how he saw a TV documentary one evening about the children of prostitutes and one child said that a client (a John) of his mother's had taunted him that he had just screwed his mother. This shocked Stromae and he started thinking about how he wanted to address it. It's an ode to sex workers because it's the world's oldest profession (for a reason) and will always be there whether we like it or not and always will be. He's a truly empathetic being. He said this is his most ambitious video and thanked the thousands of people involved in making it on a really frigid day when it was filmed. Amazing song and truly stunning video. So happy you are reviewing Stromae's work. He's one of the most important artists in the last 50 years. A complete artist who not only writes songs, but he also designed the costumes, the staging and worked around the clock on Racine Carrée, his last Album. His absolutely brilliant staging for that tour was perfection. This new album is a brilliant successor to Racine Carrée. Very happy to see your review. He has been overlooked in the US and Britain for way too long and that's a shame because he's not only brilliant, he's also charismatic, honest and very humble. FYI: He added London to his tour dates. It's a one off show at the OVO Arena Wembley on May 4th 2023. If it hasn't already sold out. In case you or any of.your subscribers is interested. I would go in November to Madison Square Garden if I could but unfortunately I'm too ill. It was my dream to see him in concert but that would take a miracle. Thanks for your review.

The album is called "Multitude", and the main goal is to put together elements of a lot of cultures. Ok. So...what does he did? Choose a profession present across the cultures, a prostitute, and builds a lyric in which we get to listen four different people talking about her (four different perspectives). Then, he puts together classic music (the harpsichord and the violin sounds) and popular music (the percussion)...and gives the customer, the manager and the police a more talking sing in the verses, contrasting with the operatic singing in the chorus which is always her son. This is a hardcore musical and thematic coherence.

In each verse, he sings with a different personality, each personality eulogizing/talking about a woman(who was a sex worker) from their perspective, which makes this song a masterpiece... In verse 1: He sings like a man who has been a client of a sex worker for years. That's why he says "Everything in life can be bargained if you have money, and after all, I'm probably her best customer" In verse 2: He sings like the pimp trying to justify his trade, that's why he says, " I am the one feeding them, their lives would be mediocre without me, I give them a place to sleep ....for 50 40 30 or 20% etc.' In verse 3: He sings like a super judgemental policeman addressing the sex worker, that is why he says, "Move along now woman, take back your ID and what's left of your dignity" However, in Chorus/Bridge: He sings like a son unconditionally defending a dead mother, that is why he says, "Leave my mom alone, yes I know she's not perfect, she's a hero, and I will speak of her with pride"
