I enjoyed the video, but was dismayed by the spelling errors in the subtitles and vagueness of Question 2, along with the awful “answers” of Question 5. This video fell flat on its face if the intent was to convey proper grammar, but perhaps the people keen to learn the correct forms and expressions will find other, more informative videos or ways of studying. Thanks for the effort, though.

At the Level 5 question: #3 and #4 is grammatically incorrect. #2 answer is grammatically correct and maybe Australians and/or British would say this, but no one would say that using American English. That leaves #1...maybe it's Australian or British English that would say that? not sure. If it's American English it would be: "I will not tolerate this situation". So, none of the above.

I don't understand why you use definite article when speaking about U.K. Does that mean that you should also say "I come from the Germany or the France"?
@AV-we6wo
@AV-we6wo Жыл бұрын
You wouldn't say the Germany or the France, or if you talk about Great Britain - no 'the' before that. But if you want to use the official name, e g. if you say 'I'm a citizen of the Federal Republic of Germany', you have the article 'the' before republic. Same regarding 'the UK' - you're just using a shorter version of the official name 'the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', so you still need the article.
@anndeecosita3586
@anndeecosita3586 Жыл бұрын
They should not have used that example because the reason you use the ahead of the UK has nothing to do with the explanation they gave about there being only one. If that was the case then that would apply to many other places in the world. There is a list of rules in English for when to use the when referring to countries. I won’t go into details but suggest that people study them. If you don’t use the article when you are supposed to, people will understand but they will know you aren’t a native speaker. The Bahamas The Dominican Republic The Philippines Also keep in mind that most countries have both a colloquial and an official name. I say China in every day speaking but the People’s Republic of China for more official type matters. Even on this channel it seems like a lot of people don’t realize my country’s actual name is the United States of America not the United States.

If it was any sort of person who CARED one bit about the details, they would have got somebody to check it for them, or they would have checked it themselves using online tools. Certainly I myself would never have released a half baked video like this if I was making one in a language that I could only half understand. So no, I'm not gonna be understanding about this. It shows nothing more than laziness and carelessness. It shows that they're totally disinterested in getting it right, even though they've literally got English speakers right there who could correct every mistake in the video and it would only take them 5 mins. I don't respect that. Why not? Because I don't automatically respect everybody just because they're from another country. They don't deserve respect just for that, especially when they're just making a video for clout and for the views, and not for actual interest in the language which is what they're supposed to be interested in. I really don't like that. So yeah... I respect people with integrity. I think that's really important in a person. Hello, I'm Matteo from Italy and I wanted to ask you a question. In the example with 'I will never not tolerate this situation' I thought it was wrong because in school one of the first things teachers tell students is NEVER put the double negation in english 😂 But then you said that as a native speaker you use it, so I wanted to know in which situations you can use it. In a grammar test I understood it's wrong, but in real life you use it when you want to put more emphasis? Or in other situations? Thank you 😊

In an English class or when writing formally, you're not supposed to use a double negative. However, using double negatives can be used as slang for emphasis when hanging out with friends. For example, you might say "I'm never not watching movies" if you're talking casually with your friends about how you watch a lot of movies regularly. It's sort of used as an exaggeration. But, it's not really considered proper or professional, so you wouldn't use it at school or work. At least, as a native English speaker that's how I would use/ not use double negatives in my life!

I don’t think the first example was a wise choice for explaining definite vs indefinite articles. The fact that there is only one UK is not why the definite article is used. There is only one England yet no one would say I am from “the England”. You would say the Bahamas. There is another set of rules as to when we put the article the ahead of a country in English and it’s not exactly the same depending on if you are speaking American or UK English. I remember there was a discussion awhile back and it was explained that we say the Netherlands. I read in an article recently that Ukraine was complaining about being called the Ukraine so most Western journalists have stopped using it. However, before it was called the Ukraine when it was part of the Soviet Union.

The definite article is NOT 'only one in the world', it is 'only one in that particular sentence/context' - if you are referring to one pen, you will say 'the pen', even though there are millions in the world. @Schuyler2614
@Schuyler2614 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that wasn't a very good question. I didn't realize the blanks were supposed to be the same word and it took me the 5 seconds to even get that it was meant to be a 1-10 scale. The blanks aren't even the same length: three spaces in one and five in the other, meaning the second blank should logically be "three". The first thing that I thought of was "one out of three", like there were three food items and I got to pick one of the three to eat, lol. It would have been better if the sentence was "The food was ten out of ___." Then it's clear that 1) it's asking for a scale, 2) the answer is only one number, and most importantly 3) "ten" is the only one of the choices that would make sense. ("Ten out of two"? Probably not.)

LOL, As an American English speaker, the only one I missed was Que 2 because it sounded like it was asking for a scale; like 3 out of 10...and did seriously none of them notice that Competition was misspelled as "Compition" ???

and 'thoes' and 'thoese' in Q1. This channel can never get the grammar right.. And no, I'm not shitting on them as an 'ignorant native English speaker'; English is my 2nd language

I really don't get why Christina only says "I'm Christina from US." instead of "The" US. As they just explained in the video why "The" is used in "The UK". or is it an American thing?

She does say "the US", but it's spoken quickly and easy to miss. But you're right that it would sound awkward if she had omitted it

Christina did say the US. I’m thinking you haven’t spoken to many Americans. And the reason the “the” is used for the UK has nothing to do with the explanation provided for when to use the definite article. Actually the UK isn’t a country but is made up of several countries none of which include the definite article in English. No one says the England although there is only one England. There is a set of rules in English as to when to use the definite article with a country’s name.

What I've noticed about these types of English tests online is that a lot of the questions don't provide the best answer, and you're left picking the best of 4 options. In addition to the errors noted in the comments, I would also add that question 4 is technically correct but worded strangely. If someone asks you: "What time does your father get home? the answer is "My father returns (comes, gets) home late at night." or "My father usually returns (comes, gets) home late at night." "My father will arrive home late at night." is grammatically fine, but you would never say that in conversation, as it's a prediction, he may get out of work early, or work later, or go to the bar, or whatever. I suppose "arrives" is a better choice than "will arrive", but it's a strange word to use, and "will return" would also be better, though still a prediction. "At 8AM I will arrive at work." is a better use for "arrive". You start at home, your schedule has you arriving somewhere else, and then you return home.

Question 5, answer 1 is grammatically incorrect. You never say “tolerate with”! Tolerate must be immediately followed by the subject. Tolerate this situation. Tolerate working with him.

Exactly. This whole episode is a shambles. As a native English speaker, it's embarrassing to see these people messing up everything, and I hope people trying to learn English don't watch it.

The problem in learning english or any other language is the communication is it the big obstacle. I could say that i am a little bit good in grammar and vocabulary rules but when i make a conversation especially with someone who's fluent in english it's going to be very hard and complicated for me to express well. So the main problem is the communication ( i rarely find people around me speaking english ) and learning by myself isn't enough
