Good vibes don't last forever. You can't sit around and do nothing and expect to continue being happy. One dude used his sudden happiness to go start something, and made a friend. While the rest just sat around. It's all in the timing. That's what I got from it, at least.

It's such a damn good toon. I think David's ability to deprive viewers of closure or context but to offer intensely captivating emotional themes is central to the neverending appeal of his work - it feels like there's something going on, but almost like it's more of an abstract expression than an explicit allegory or the like.

It's Lit read the description. "This cartoon isn't about drugs or homosexuality or testicles or any of the other things people are suggesting." personally with the whole "it's all in the timing" bit, if it has a meaning I think it's probably about a joke that everyone likes (pulch), but the guy(s) who came up with it stops for whatever reason, likely a deeply disturbing one (Luxembourg dying), and then nobody likes it (pulch dies). somebody tries to bring it back up (maybe it's pure liquid happiness) but it's quickly discarded (no, no, it tastes like burnt yogurt). the skeptical guy from the beginning could just be someone who doesn't get the joke, and Terry might be someone who is just a little obsessed with it (my life has new meaning!)? also could be a political statement but idk about the UK and Luxembourg situation in 2006 so I don't really want to suggest that
@whatsagoodusername8237 жыл бұрын
I've watched this a few times and I always kind of thought that it was weird that he'd pick Luxembourg. I just watched it again and I realized that Luxembourg is one of the richest countries in the world. I'm with you in that I don't know much about the UK and Luxembourg in 2006, but it started looking an awful lot like the Great Depression. It started with many people experiencing short economic boosts. Again, not sure about the UK, but the US definitely experienced a short period of greatly increased national wealth, and everyone was happily spending their money on whatever luxuries they could afford, having as much fun as they could. This period could be seen as the Pulch suddenly appearing and giving off it's good vibes, and the part where Terry and Derek, who knew nothing about each other, went to buy blazers (a luxury) and had a great time with each other just doing nothing. The skeptical guy could be someone theorizing that this period of growth couldn't last forever, and Luxembourg's reassuring arm could be the banks (and the people) reassuring themselves that everything would be fine even when it clearly was not going to be fine. Then, without warning, the banks began failing (death of Luxembourg) and everyone's money disappeared (Luxembourg was the only one who could take care of the Pulch, and now he was gone). People couldn't party anymore or enjoy anything that they could during the short economic boom (everyone leaves the Pulch, Terry can't pay for his blazer). The Depression could have been the part where the Pulch stopped giving off its warm vibes, and while everyone hopes in vain that Luxembourg (the banks) will come back and revive the good times. Unfortunately, while in reality the banks did come back, the economy was not nearly as strong as it was during the economic boom (everything went back to normal, but Luxembourg was dead and the Pulch soon withered and died soon after, ending the good times). Of course, the depression ended long before this cartoon came out, but maybe it's a general statement about how short periods of economic growth usually precede crashes, and people should not just count on economic success to last forever if they have no idea how to maintain it.

Love reading all the interpretations from years ago. I never got the impression it was an actual metaphor, more like surrealism with the general theme of happiness being a contrived idea, nothing but arbitrary connections and shallow pleasures reinforced and exaulted by the media. Like theres no reason for that pulch to be seen as a source of happiness. It could just as easilly be labelled repulsive. "The trick is in the timing". Sometimes we feel good, sonetimes we don't. Sometimes an entire population is ripe for a new trend or idea, and it has nothing to do with the impact of any product or the improvement/deterioration of external circumstanes.

My own personal meaning from this video is about self medication. Friendly vibes shone out of the pulch and the people within it become a collectivity. Sometimes others can do better things with a euphoric push from medicine or certain substances without needing more or to hang around the tree at all times like the shirtless dude who goes to pockleton and decides to spread happiness and find out things for himself. Anyway, even though the people all differed in personality around the pulch, at first, they all stayed in collective happiness. Then logics and ideas started to differ a little, the mood switches. Then Luxembourg gets sick and eventually dies. "The trick is in the timing." Don't addict to the pulch, or the self medication or else you'll need it all the time, and it'll work less and less each day. I dunno, that's my own idea. =D I honestly think art (in all forms) should be open to interpretation sometimes, without direct meaning. As I've said with my work; it's not what I see... it's what you see.

I disagree, I reckon that people got the idea of what this video is about after seeing the following points: - "Pulch" sounds like "bulge" and looks like a giant ballsack - The pulch's references "are questionable". - There's a reassuring arm. - They have a measurement fight. - They celebrate good bowels - It's all "in the timing", etc... See what I'm suggesting is going on here? Now I know that a lot of David's stuff is pretty open to thought, but with videos like these, there's no real way to deviate from what it conveys. You stated that it's about medication but didn't have anything to back that up.

Yeah.... yours makes a lot more sense than mine. I feel ya, at the time I posted this comment it resonated to me in that way, even if Firth stated it wasn't about that. Looking back on it, I feel like even in 20 years his symbolic yet cryptic animations will still be an enigma. So awesome.

I think David just animates whatever he dreamed about last night.

15 years later and I still wonder what the trick to maintaining the pulch was. And I've never refused a hamper.
