I remember watching the City vs Arsenal community shield game last season, i literally said at half time this game clearly does not matter to the City players or Pep. KDB literally had an open shot to goal but chose to pass it back. But the UEFA Super Cup is called a ‘cup’ and it’s only played between the Europa League Winner and Champions League winner. If it’s a draw it goes to extra time and penalties. The Community Shield like last year was played by the FA Cup and League winner vs the league runner-up. They were in it by default. It doesn’t go to extra time and it’s a ‘shield’ rather than a ‘cup. Before penalties were a thing it wasn’t even replayed if it was a draw. Just shared.

Obviously one is better but the qualification structure being similar means you also give the community shield validity. That’s why the Spanish Italian German and French versions of it are taken as seriously.

@@Nintenmarz Fair enough although If anything, the winner of the champions league is already playing at a higher level than the winner of the europa league. 1st vs 2nd in a league or 1st vs winner of a cup where all teams are eligible, is always going to be a tighter contest. But in terms of prestige of course the super cup is better. But for the people who value the super cup specifically because of the qualification structure, then the community shield should also be valued. That’s the point I was making. If it is in terms of marketing/interest or other factors people value it, then of course the same argument won’t hold for the community shield.

It’s a little bit of a myth of the Champions League coming too soon for Newcastle. People point to the injuries but the majority of those injuries came a single game into the competition and they ended up being long term injuries, at that point it wasn’t because of the players playing too much football each week because the season had barely started. Really they started the bulk of their Champions League campaign disadvantaged because of the awful luck with injuries and extent of injuries and it’s easy to look on paper and go “well they got knocked out” without any context but the context is they were robbed by a dodgy pen decision that essentially meant PSG didn’t finish bottom of the group I think had Newcastle actually had their proper team rather than relying on 3rd choice fullbacks playing as centre backs and a 17 year old in CM I they’d have possibly stood a chance of getting out of that group.
