Yep! I’m so excited to start making my own treats, and not have to feel dreadful about wasting money 😊 I think I’ll do the mince and onion pies first for my old Dad’s birthday tea…. Serve them with boiled potatoes, peas and carrots, bit of red sauce, big mug of tea 👌

Thankyou for all of your super, easy to follow videos. I am learning more from your super videos than I can remember learning when I did a cookery course at school. The course, rather than teach basic good cooking, soon began teaching how to make meals with fancy foreign sounding names, needing ingredients I had never heard of😮 How lovely and refreshing it is to watch your many videos. Weather was thankfully a little cooler today and I had a sudden hankering to make some teacakes. Checked my pantry, good to go so came straight here hoping you'd got a recipe, there it was, found exactly what i was looking for. Oh my goodness, these were the most tasty, fluffy and HUGE teacakes I've ever made! I added lemon zest and brushed on a sugar glaze whilst they were still warm. You could definitely make about 12 hot cross buns, so the cost would be mere pennies. Thank you for posting such fantastic recipes, please don't stop. I love your down to earth kitchen too!

Made and baked these on today. My wife is the baker and I cook. She has never had these before and loved them.👏 She wants to know when I’m baking again saying it will be our new Hot Cross Bun recipe 👍 I added mixed peel and orange zest and yielded 8 decent sized cakes (reducing to 12p each 😂) 🇨🇦

Yes you have to plan bread making....I usually start a baking day with the bread dough and then put some other recipes together while it's proving. Thanks

Fabulous, haven't had teacakes in ages as I often find them pricey for the quantity. Will have a go at making these once we have finished off a fruit loaf I made today in the bread machine and buy some more supplies. Will also probably make 8 as there are 4 of us here. thank you 🙂

So simple, so nice. Thanks! I made a batch today, 12 smaller buns. Lots of butter on fresh baked rolls and some for the freezer. Incidentally I always use a bread maker for mixing and the first rising. Then manually for the rest. It's easy and still very satisfying.

Hello Dave. Thank you for another useful recipe with demonstration. In the list of ingredients you state All Spice and I appreciate what you mean by that is UK mixed spice (I think) but there is as you know such a thing as allspice which is just one spice and not a spice mixture. Wouldn't want anyone to get the two things mixed up but if they do that probably wouldn't be a disaster. Thanks. Richard

I have just found your channel. Thanks for making common sense stuff with sensible ingredients. I also appreciate how you show how to deal with things like sticky dough. I’ve been just through in flour at it ending up with tough breads. Please could you do some bread or bread rolls? I live on my own and no freezer space so can’t really have nice bread without throwing some away 🙏🏼😁

Extra bit to add to my comment below. Have just discovered that the Sally Lunn I grew up with in NZ, and also found in some bakeries in Australia, is nothing like the real English Sally Lunn! Isn't it surprising and interesting how recipes have a sea change when they travel!

You could use all purpose flour, it may change the texture a little but it should still work.

Hi! I love your channel. You are so inspiring. What is the word/measurement you referenced when you said it would translate from grams to... or metric to.... oz? Yes, sigh, I am american and appreciate the conversion.! But what was the term you used?

If you look in the description the measurements are in grams, and he’s converted it to oz as well.

I love a tea cake. When I have made them in the past (Delia's recipe), I have found the outside not as soft as commercial offerings. What am I doing wrong?

Try putting them on a lower shelf in the oven or a slightly lower temp.

@@BakingOnABudget Tried your suggestion and recipe. A definite improvement, very nice, but not quite the shop bought experience. Might be my fan assisted oven needs to be run at a lower temperature? Some recipes call for an egg wash, so I may give this a try. Also, John Kirkwood applies a sugar and water glaze, whilst the tea cakes are still warm.

@@LittlePetieWheat Yes the fan oven would have to be set a little lower, as I am using a conventional oven. I think an egg wash would make them more crisp.

@@BakingOnABudget The 50/50 water/sugar wash on the warm tea cakes is definitely a step forward. I bake my sourdough in a preheated dutch oven, which gives greater crust control. I also spray the dough with water, prior to putting the lid on. I might try this for the tea cakes, baking is a real skill, which requires much trial and error, unless you can learn from a master. I am grateful for your knowledge and insights. I am determined to achieve tea cake nirvana! I love your pasties, they are a real taste of home. I had stopped making them, because my pastry recipe, gave me terrible indigestion, but yours doesn't, so I am now making them again weekly. 🙂 Keep up the good work.

I cook from scratch so had to look up the price of muffins and other single serving sweet breads. Whew, those sell from $3.50 to $6 including tax in the US. Then there's the tip and gas driving. That is a huge mark up in price.

Yes.....shops and cafes have a lot of overheads...but baking your ow is always a lot less expensive, tastier and better fun. Thanks for watching.

😋 Mmm, they look absolutely lovely. I buy them every now and again, but some brands are a bit bland and disappointing. I was shopping a couple of days ago and was tempted to buy some - but not at £1.80 for two! 😮 I will certainly give your recipe a go 👍 but would just like to check something please? When you set the dough aside for the first prove you mentioned taking them out of the oven (04:42). Does the oven have to be pre-warmed? Or did you put them in a cold oven because it's a draught-free space? Many thanks & best wishes.

Yes, I bought one online which has very handy measures. Had it a few years and the lines are still there. Just search for 'wood pastry board'. I found exactly the one I have but I can't post the link here. Good luck, it's well worth having one.

What temperature do you set the oven to prove the dough? Do you leave it on whilst the dough is in?

I think it's just the heat from the oven light.

What fruits would be in mixed dried fruit? Here in the US it would be fruit cake mix with citron etc. This looks different. Thanks anyone.

Raisins, sultanas, currants but it's possible to buy a mix here that has mixed peel in too. I'm a plain Jane when it comes to teacakes, I just like sultana's in mine. 👍🏻

You could have probably got 8 to 10 out of the mix and they still would have been a decent size

Just done a batch..... pushed it from 6 to 8 per mix....... still can't get the buggers on one tray but they do.... just about.... fit in my toaster. Sad to say they didn't last long..... more tomorrow.
