@@blotski The unnecessary geography lesson was ironic, since I am a highly educated person who spends a lot of time with friends and family in Europe, but I am aware of the common English prejudices and ignorance regarding Americans. For us it’s not that we don’t notice accents. We usually do. We just enjoy them. Maybe it’s due to the strong tradition of refugees and immigrants bringing their beautiful accents to this country, including the many people who come from other English-speaking countries. We also have tons of visitors from around the world. While a growing number of Americans is anti-television/movies, those who do partake in visual media typically enjoys shows from around the world, with their fun and interesting accents.

I was in a boarding school and most of the staff members were either Dutch or from one of the countries that has German as a language, if they weren’t actually from Germany itself - most of them struggled with the TH diphthong, usually pronouncing it as if it was an S - sumsing for something, everysing for everything, sank for thank - the TH diphthong does exist in the German language, but the H is silent - it might as well not be there!

If you happen to end up at the court by a son of a b....d, you automatically lose the case no matter how wrong how evil the other person who has no accent is. It’s an interesting thing to learn Spanish as an English speaker because we instinctively pronounce them differently - realising that “haber” and “a ver” were pronounced the same was a very strange experience! Though in Spanish they’re of course always pronounced the same, I understand that some teachers try to get native Spanish speakers to pronounce them differently. I think the fact they’re pronounced the same is perfectly natural in Spanish, I wouldn’t ever tell anyone to change how they speak their native language!

I'm also a foreign languages teacher and I would like to share this idea with you. Correcting students is always difficult and it can be easier to refer to the inaccuracies that we find in their use of the language precisely as that. Sometimes the word mistake can produce a negative feeling in someone who's still learning. You can say that the pronunciation "isn't entirely correct", or that "it can ne improved if", or "the standard pronunciation is", etc. Just a tip I hope you find useful. 💙

Hi! English is my native language. I know some French vocabulary (because I took one year of French a long time ago) and a tiny bit of Spanish. When I travel to Mexico, I find myself wanting to say French words for some Spanish words. I have to pause and ask myself, or a friend, to clarify which is which! I also know some Mandarin vocabulary and my brain goes to some of these words as well when I’m in a Spanish speaking context. I think it is just that you are activating the language part of your brain and accessing what is more comfortable and automatic. That’s my best guess!

It’s not necessarily the same as in “law” - here in the UK, we distinguish between “ah” as in “arm” or “palm” and “aw” as in “pore” or “law” (pronounced like “lore”). And I wouldn’t call it a diphthong as such, more a long monophthong - the sound of the vowel doesn't change from beginning to end.
