she has it right, teaching SHOULD be like a performance.
@Time2Splitt9 жыл бұрын
MasakanSolaris I think that gives off a bit of the wrong idea; performance seems a bit one way as though you're just sitting & watching, and ultimately in performance you hope the learner/audience gets what you're trying to express, you can't ask questions to clarify or engage in the content. I like to say teaching is a good conversation, giving off feels of it being 2 way, participatory, involved, concepts are learnt by: - Explaining how the ideas/concepts works with existing associations the human of that age & upbringing can make sense of(otherwise no processing & it is just data like the matrix screen, i.e. as a kid you don't understand the gravitas of a debilitating illness so much, because you don't understand how it fucks up your whole life & how fucking up whole life is bad, harder to find a partner, that is bad because, etc....) & to clearly put the ideas/concepts in context, for what applications & how those applications are relevant to them of their age & upbringing. - Asking questions in a conversation, you create new areas to explore based on the ideas./concepts. I'm a bit tired so this isn't expressed as clear as i'd want it but yeah, teaching should be like a good conversation.
@essennagerry8 жыл бұрын
+Time2Splitt I absolutely agree, but, if you're at a low level a *good* performance type teachung will do it for you, at least for many people. (And if you're intelligent enough in that way, which most people are.) It's when you're at a high level that the two way thing becomes more important. Of course, exceptions there too. I'm just trying to say I think that's why she has success. The Koreans who come to her are hardworking students and from what we see they're in the highschool/uni age, I guess. Their problem with English probably isn't with understanding, but simply a need for more education. (From what I gather generally Koreans become good in English in college, not highschool. So I think highschool doesn't provide enough not in the sense of quality as much as in quantity. But idk, that just my guess!)

She enjoys every minute of her work...I can tell. So it almost ceases to be "work" for her. She's found what she absolutely loves to do and is getting paid heavily for it. In this global capitalist society, this is the peace that we all seek. Kudos to her; her life is one long vacation.
@soulscanner668 жыл бұрын
+Michael Griffith She's not offering anything useful, though. Her English isn't really that good, doesn't offer opportunities for practice, and there is plenty of material out there for free. She's the personification of everything that is wrong with capitalism today. She does not add value to the economy.
@jerrycooper14288 жыл бұрын
+Guy Souriandt 100% correct!
@michaelgriffith81478 жыл бұрын
+Guy Souriandt i won't argue too much since i'm not really passionate about the discussion, but her students have the option to get the free material; nobody's forcing them to go to her. i'm learning Japanese, and chose to work with tutors beyond a certain point, although there are plenty of free resources online, as well as free language exchanges and girlfriends (which aren't free, haha). this is everything that's RIGHT with capitalism - people choosing to spend disposable income for what they value. furthermore, her English is VERY good, and non-Americans who even speak halfway decent English have many more opportunities than those who don't...including coming to America to open businesses or take jobs away from less qualified Americans.
@soulscanner668 жыл бұрын
+Michael Griffith For a second year English student, her English is great. But for someone teaching conversational English for A LOT of money, she just doesn't provide value. A good English teacher models impeccable grammar. She, on the other hand, makes horrible grammatical errors.In 30 short seconds, she doesn't finish a sentence, letting them run on and on. She uses "you know" as an interjection 4 times (This makes her look juvenile; it's hard to take her seriously; never do this if you are learning English). Worst of all, she makes 4 obvious grammar mistakes. 1 - 0:30 "Of course, the more numbers of students I have in my classroom, I earn more money ..." 2 - 0:36 " ... but part of my income is coming from online" 3 - 1:49 " ... they make best effort ... " 4 - 1:53 ".... It's coming from their parents generation..." These should be: 1 - The more students I have, the more money I earn. 2 - Part of my income comes from online teaching. 3 - I don't even know what that means; it's not English. 4 - It comes from their parents. This is like learning carpentry online from someone that has the most expensive tools, the fanciest overalls, but can't drive a nail straight. Sure she loves her job. She loves the chauffeur. She loves the make-up. She loves the personal trainers. She loves the make-up. Mostly, she loves being on TV. But don't you want your English teacher to be passionate about the English language first?
@michaelgriffith81478 жыл бұрын
+Guy Souriandt you're really reaching, bro, so i'll just ask a question from a higher level: If somebody who speaks less-than-perfect English is making $500k a year to teach English in a country with a well-functioning Capitalist structure (which means that people would find out if she wasn't very good at what she's selling and thus would not be WILLING pay her for it), what does that say about people like YOU who are on KZbin nitpicking her English for free?
@yuanxiaoxu98208 жыл бұрын
The problem is not the teacher not having perfect English, guys! The problem is BBC not grasping the fact that her students are not in her class to learn English! They are there to get entertained by her performance. She is earning a lot because she put an effort on sharpening her performance and having a good PR/marketing team.
@jerrycooper14287 жыл бұрын
As an English teacher myself, you nailed it! Brilliantly said.
@Mr5a5uk7 жыл бұрын
English teacher is an ordinary job on ordinary salary if the teacher cannot extend their communication across boundaries. You may be an English teacher, but even with an excellent PR/marketing team, the reputation and your goals are most likely not on par with this lady. If it was, you'd be spending less time with your children, perhaps. We all know parenting feels like a hangover at times, but her whole schedule is her students. At the end of the day, it is different priorities and interests. I don't see how it can stop other people to do the same, you either got it or not. In the generation of social media, don't be surprised appearance on the internet is ridiculously enough to get people to click on something that is eye catching.

Katherine Yang the last thing I would be is jealous of someone's personal choice. Stop suggesting things when they aren't there. Im a korean and i talk about it just little bit. Well almost korean high schooler are in school from 8 a.m. to at least 9 or 10 p.m. And 12nd grades go to school at saturday and public holiday. And we have extracurriculum lessons at weekend and sometime, someone go to listen to it after school at night. All of these is for preparing to College Scholastic Assessment Test. And add more, nowdays elementary school students cant hang up with friends cuz everyone go to listen to extracurriculms after school. Some children study all of day by parents. So korea is first in suicide ranking in OECD and it is first in suicide rate to suicide for stress of study. So it means many students decide to suicude by study and its fact. I wouldn't say she's fluent. There are a lot of mistakes in her speech such as 'of course the more numbers of students in my classroom..' She can speak it well that is for sure, but she's not fluent. And being bilingual is not difficult. My boyfriend from India learnt Japanese for 2 years and can speak, read and write. He actually knows more Chinese (Japanese Kanji) characters than I do even though I did 12 years of Chinese school. If you were brought up in different circumstances it's not hard at all.

The math doesn't add up. The narrator stresses that she has 200,000 students. Those are online students. Eather she gives online access for free, which would be stupid, or they are paying about $2 each for a year's worth of online lectures. Someone needs an accountant here, and I suspect it's the BBC correspondent. )))

+dmitriy40 Yea but they're probably talking about net income
@RickDeckardMemories7 жыл бұрын
yasashii89 Are you suggesting that her NET income is $2 per student for A YEAR WORTH OF CLASSES?
@soxnation10007 жыл бұрын
dmitriy40 That's often how it works with online stuff...you can give a huge number of people online access, and each person pays very little but it all adds up.
@daeuna49667 жыл бұрын
She takes home 500k, but the business itself will earn more. You forget that she needs to pay the people she works with (the accountant, the camera man, ), the rent fee for her classroom and office, the costs of running and maintaining a website, the makeup etc.

She found her niche, and she is milking it. But she still has a korean accent when she speaks english, and that isn't good for the students.
@AlishaNic8 жыл бұрын
+kk P I disagree, her English is Impeccable for a native Korean. She almost sounds American but with a faint accent. Her pronunciation is nearly perfect. Many teachers that teach English whether it be in Europe, Asia or Latin countries that are native there have heavy accents which in turn becomes difficult for students to learn English the right way, but she surprised me with her clarity in English.
@muskeepaps76898 жыл бұрын
+kk P Why not? She has a neutral accent and you can understand her right? That's the goal of learning English. To be conversational in English, to be able to write and speak English. Everybody has an accent be it American, British or Australian accent. Not all native English speakers sound the same anyway.
@soulscanner668 жыл бұрын
+kk P Accents are fine. English is adaptable to that. Grammar and syntax are important, though, and she massacres these.

I'm Japanese. To tell my impression, Korean's education system has to much meaningless curriculum and loss. How many Koreans awarded novel prize while Japanese consectively awarded this?? They can well handle paper exam but do not educate as volunterily thinking the theory of things. This exessively education fieber must contribute the higher unemployment rate of current adolescents. Whether they graduate famouse University or not, majority of new recruits are being unemployee simultaneously graduate Univ.

I think Netherland's and Finland's education also flexible.I've watched the TV program which is broadcasted about the education system of north europe. Kids are prepared the curriculum that they can freely choose the subject by their own willingness. Selecting subject isn't the deed which brings by someone else. They do it as their willingness .So this style encourage to absorb the knowledge and evolved it as their own.
