Coffee scene was realistic. It has happened with me at SubWay while ordering a sub. I was new in America and I can speak English but the concept of selecting everything by yourself was new to me. Being a quite person, I was reading and trying to understand how to order and what to order and was confused. I am still in USA and once in a while I see someone struggling (visiting parents from India, people in theme parks, or sometimes at tourist places) confused and trying to understand what to do. I always offer to explain and help. ✌️✌️

Although my English was always pretty good, the first time I went to the US (a long time ago), I too had a similar experience to Sridevi's cafe experience in this movie. I wanted to order a sandwich, but was completely overwhelmed by the line of questioning of the lady at the counter. 'Whole wheat or white bread?', 'chips or carrots' etc. etc. It went on and on. Stuff that was completely alien to me at that point. I couldn't respond at all for a while. I felt the lady's irritation with me and felt like she and the other around me were judging me and secretly mocking me. In the end I left without ordering anything. Memories of that incident make this movie even more relatable to me than it might be to most people.

Shashi never needed "love" in her life b'coz she loved her husband and her husband loved her, too.( In climax, she gives two ladooes to only her husband). She only needed "respect" in relationship. In that terrace scene, she runs away from the French guy b'coz she feels affection ( not love) towards him. As for the first time someone has respected her for who she truly is.( Without the ability of speaking a so called language). So, only the French guy loved her. She didn't loved him. ( In climax, she thanx him for giving her, her self respect by making her feel special about her). So, for Shashi, he only taught her self-respect. So, the fact that Shashi didn't ended up with the French guy h've nothing to do with a culture.

This movie shows the actual reality of an Indian arrange marriage system, the reason India has less divorce rates is because Indian women compromise (a lot).. Indian arrange marriage is all about compromise.. Indian women keeps the priorities of family first & her priorities at last, whether the husband is an ahole, if he cares about her or not, doesn't matter.. she lives in a joint family & not alone with her husband, so yeah you have to compromise. "What would society say if you leave him?" is a big issue here, there's a pressure. It's a sad reality, but things are changing.. working women are taking stand for themselves & that's why this movie works, it depicts this situation very beautifully. Btw..Loved ur review ❤

Any relationship to work needs compromise. It's just about the extent of compromise compared to what you are getting out of the relationship. If you hit on a relationship without compromise you basically hit jackpot.

I have first hand exp of seeing the man suffer, and his whole family because of the woman. Arrange marriage again. My uncle ( mom's side). It's sad. He just suffer in silence. And she is a bitch. Do it goes both ways. Don't exclude man. They suffer too. But you won't hear that. Half knowledge is dangerous. More dangerous is man spreading it.

This story is inspired by the experiences of the director Gauri Shinde. She went to a reputed convent school ( my senior incidently) and her mother could not speak English. It's a sweet family .....but he's condecending and the daughter is rude....because she allows them to do It. To answer your question...shes an awesome actress and shes not normally like that....shes just that good an actor.

She stayed in the marriage because in the orthodox Indian culture, divorced women are usually looked down at and also, kind of excluded from society. That's why people in India rather stay in a problematic marriage than divorce. Also, she didn't divorce him because she was a family oriented person. It's all a reference to and a part of the Indian culture. Edit. No this isn't Sridevi's last movie. Her last movie was a movie called "Mom".

People do have difference in marriages, but they just not divorce on every damn disagreement. Things can be worked out in any relationship. If people start giving up on small stuffs, it will create a havoc in society, like in west. However, if one is getting abused & opressed in marriage, that is a different thing and like every wise mind, I'd support the decision to part the ways.

@@mikiim5739 What are you saying? Who says it's a taboo in Indian culture? Don't just demean it by no reason. There can be many reasons for divorce. Totally agree with Korbin here, I was so frustrated when she stayed with him. I didn't feel like she had to go with the French guy either (even though he was so dreamy 😍), just that she should leave a clearly terrible marriage. Part of me thinks (might be a controversial opinion) that it would have been too brave for a film to show this middle-aged, middle-class wife deciding to leave her husband. It would go against an abstract idea of 'tradition' and 'good women' that is still quite prevalent in India. Anyway, the husband and daughter's characters are clearly meant to be caricatures of many men and younger women in India who do behave this way. In my family, we certainly all felt guilty and realised we needed to show more respect towards our moms! And of course, my mom LOVED this film. Sorry for the PhD thesis-length of my comment 🤣

I find myself agreeing with Korbin's points of view here. The daughter's and husband's realisations were temporary and they are most likely to remain a**holes. But the movie's ending is understandable. In India, it is always about putting 'society' and 'family' and 'saving face' before the self and unfortunately, women, more often than not are burdened with this cultural baggage.

If you want to see the level of acting Sridevi could achieve, I recommend an old film Sadma (1983). It has Kamal Haasan too who is a legend in Indian cinema. This was not her last film, it's Mom (2017), which has a completely indistinguishable Nawazuddin Siddiqui. You guys are approaching 200K, best of luck. Rick, please bring your son more often. Thank you so much for the review.. I was eagerly waiting for this one. Sridevi is beyond phenomenal.. And u r referring to her with Meryl Streep is just on the point.. She is a shapeshifter when it comes to any role.. She always have substance in her role and with all her small nuances she always given us spectacular performance... I would recommend u guys to carryforward with her old movies now.. My recommendation : 1. Chalbaaz (1989) - Hindi 2. Mondram pirai (1982) -Tamil remade in hindi again with Sridevi as Sadma (1983) 3. Lamhe (1991) - Hindi 4. Mr. India (1986) - Hindi 5. Mom (2017) - Hindi 6. Gumraah ( 1993) - Hindi 7. Judaai ( 1997) - Hindi 8. Kshana kshanam ( 1991) - Telugu 9. Devaragam (1996) - Malayalam later dubbed in tamil and Telugu 10. nagina (1986) - Hindi 11. Laadla(1994) - Hindi This i just a small list of the extraordinary actor... Get ready to blown away.. 😊

You would be surprised to see Sri Devis’s career graph with your current assumptions. In her early days she had done the role of a spoilt brat and also an utterly innocent, easy to get away kind of role both in the same era/years. She is so versatile and her movie graph I believe would have covered all or at least most movie industries in India. And if she had approved the relationship with that French Man, this movie would have been labelled as culturally inappropriate and possibly would have been shat around by normies. Part of the message was also to kids and thats why they had to show the girl taking back her prejudices about her mom. An interesting note, this movie was dubbed in Tamil as well, am not sure it was made in Tamil. But the flight scene was actually shot again with Ajith Kumar, another A lister from Tamil Industry. Sri Devi had a good bond with him during the shoot and asked him to do a movie in her husband Boney Kapoor’s production house. And they both even had a discussion about the movie plan shortly before her demise. So the movie had a kick start immediately after her demise and its the remake of Pink which you guys know. It is titled ‘Nerkonda Parvai’ (Streamlined vision) where Ajith takes the role of Big B and will be released sometime in July.

If you're really interested to watch Sridevi's masterpieces, you gotta rewind to the 80s and early 90s. One that you should catch is Moondram Pirai, a Tamil movie in which she portrayed an amnesiac. The movie was remade in Hindi as Sadma with same cast. The acting of hers and Kamal Haasan (one of the finest actors in Indian cinema) is still spoken about till this day.

You are right Korbin. But it wasn't about if she is happy, it was about her promise, her marriage, her children and more importantly the culture. Its very common in America to get divorced. And slowly people are realising and being aware in India too. But she came from somewhere, from that time when it wasn't really allowed to break your marriage for your happiness. In indian culture, marriage is not solely about husband and wife, its more about families and culturally here, the role of a woman is to unifie the family rather breaking it whether you are happy or not. This is the conservative culture she came from. That's why, she didn't break her marriage. To know more about Indian marriages and understanding what it means, watch '2 States'. ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER ON MARRIAGE.

English Vinglish was her comeback film after a 15-year break she took to raise her kids. Difficult to believe she hadn't had a role in 15 years!! She's so natural on screen. One of my favourite scenes in EV is when she speaks with the school headmaster! I love Korbin's strong opinions about the characters lol 🤣🤣 I feel like the husband realized at the end that he underestimated her. So hopefully their relation will get better. But I agree with Korbin that sometimes someone is just an asshole that should be dumped xD I remember from Jaby's review of this movie that he was also pissed she stayed with her husband ^^ As some already mentioned her last movie is the thriller Mom, released in 2017. Sridevi's daughter Janhvi Kapoor had her first film released last year, *Dhadak* , it's the Hindi remake of Sairat. She did well. Shahid's little brother is also in it. Worth a reaction :-)
