The Lost World [Full Audiobook] by Arthur Conan Doyle
Imagine a strange, tropical place that is almost inaccessible. Time appears to have stood still there. Species of animal and plant life not seen elsewhere on Earth, except in the fossil record, inhabit the place. The lakes heave with the shapes of huge grey bulks moving under the surface. The woods are places where chittering cries move about above your head, as powerful apes move swiftly in the canopy of leaves. Then, a tree splinters nearby, and a dinosaur steps out from his hiding place... and he's eyeing YOU.
Jurassic Park? Not quite. The Lost World was an inspiration for Jurassic Park; in fact, a character in J.P. has the same name as one of the chief characters in The Lost World. It also inspired King Kong. But this is the original! Four adventurers go off to find the place shown in a dead man's sketch book - they find a war between apes and Indians, prowling dinosaurs, a sparkly treasure hidden in the blue clay - they find the Lost World. And because of the treachery of a native guide, their means of escape is destroyed!

Conan Doyle is a genius writer. He created a lot of interesting, exciting, brilliant masterpieces. I loved reading his stories translated into Russian when I was a child, and I enjoy listening and reading them now when I am trying to improve my English.

@Sans Handlebars, thanks a lot! It’s so pleasant and so inspiring to read your message! You’ve made my day! I’m going to start a channel on KZbin to improve my speaking skills, and your comment has inspired me to do that as quickly as possible.

I read the book when I was 12 or so (in my sixties now). I had no idea how funny it was. Conan Doyle has given full rein to a sense of humour and justifiable criticism of journalists in a way that one doesnt encounter in the Sherlock Holmes stories. The humour crops up in Challengers both brilliand and also vain character and the comparison with the Chieftain, and also with the upshot of the affair with Gladys. The tale and characters, so far, are much livelier than the more plodding plots and less colourful characters of Jules Verne, at least in translation. I love hearing Jules Verne on audiobooks and his stories have more science. Being a few decades earlier, for the writer and reader, the scientific knowledge was more novel and fascinating, and it is marvelous to experience the level of scientific knowledge back then. Thanks for posting this.

I stumbled in error here and quickly quit the site. I'm an Anglophile although American and I'm an expert grammarian and dialectician and certain works written for the English, 99.9% of all Americans actors and narrators should steer clear of, and, they usually do. It sounds to me that you just do not get the difference between English and American when it comes to speech or grammar. You should resort to SPELL CHECK or some aid to help you with yours.

@@rosebud3971 you're 100% correct, I prefer to listen without the eccentricities and delicacy of a "Proper" English accent. What a complete waste of time you're dedicating your life to. Pity.

@@rosebud3971 I'll agree on certain works. Sherlock Holmes, for instance must be read by an Englishman. I dont see that narrative fitting into a lost world filled with adventures and dinosaurs. I love his voicing of professor Challenger, as the monotonous, deep and hard voice really reels in the cold hearted nature of the man. Iv listened to another English version first, and was less impressed. Although, that's simply one narraration. Still, you stopped here to leave your negative opinion without interest for the work itself and that alone is telling.

I agree, it wouldn't diminish the story in the least but the word currently used sure does diminish so many humans. Changing one word twice would be a wonderful thing, and the next reader should do exactly that.

I had wanted to read this story for years to be so disappointed as badly as I am. At least I ca say I have heard it. Never to commnt on liking. Had it been written in the now, it would have remained buried underneath other drivelings of other mediocrity
