I wasnt sure but after watching your video I bought a new 950s in white. Was holding back because I thought it might lack power but I was so wrong. When you crank the throttle above 3500-4000 rpm I discovered quite accidently that the front wheel lifts very easily, with wheelie control at 2 or less. Who needs more than that! This bike will make you grin I promise. And the sound of the engine is so addictive....

Great review Dan! I got my brand new SS (S) last month and love it! I got the red but the white with red wheels is beautiful as well! A few things for anyone looking at this bike: It is comfortable. The handlebar and seat position are perfect, leaned over but not too much for a long ride. The mirrors are pretty much useless unless you tuck your arms in to look behind you. They do vibrate a lot. The engine HATES really low RPMs. It loves being 4K or above (6K after break-in period) Keep it on a battery tender if you are not riding for a few days and ambient temp is cool. The batteries are very small and the bike will have trouble starting in cold weather if not charging. Ducati dealer told me that Ducatis hate cold weather and it is true. The quick shifter is AWESOME and fun to use The bike is easy to ride and very fun and fast. Love the exhaust pops when downshifting! Cheers from Massachusetts!

Hello from NH! I work in Boston and commute on my Honda CBR500R daily whenever it is not snowing. I'm looking to upgrade my ride next year and I'm seriously considering this bike. Would you mind telling me which dealer you went to and what your average fuel range is? It appears the CBR650R (the other bike I'm considering) and the Supersport are closely matched when it comes to tank size and fuel economy. Thanks!

The rev limiter which Dan shows in neutral after startup is not only when the bike is cold. It is always engaged as long as you're in neutral. Put her in 1st and you can redline her right from the start. Not that that would be any good towards the life expectancy of the engine, but well... you can if you want to. As long as you're not in neutral. There, a 3000 rpm limit is applied all the time. Just here to watch someone else have fun on the SS950, while it's raining cats and dogs here and mine is waiting in the garage for some better weather.

You say the "mirrors are a blurry mess". I have a SS and I've found that Ducati had actually mitigated this issue by including a BMNL ("blurry mess neutraliser lever") on my bike. It's located on the left side handlebar: simply closing the throttle and engaging the BMNL results in activating mirror function while we're at it, the SFCA ("sketchy fingertip Control Algorithm") is a useful method for navigating very tight, low speed maneuvers without trapping your fingers between the bar a tank.

I really wish bikes kept using analog for at least the tach... all of these displays look so characterless and you'd have no idea whether it was meant for a superbike or brandless e-moped special. Ducati is really nailing the rest of the bike with the styling, though. Love the indicators built into the mirror and adjustable windscreen -- wish all bikes had those.

I had an 89 Yamaha FZR 600 honed out to about 646 with a 3rd level carb kit. I kicked gas out the tail pipe at a stop light. My buddy raced it in Sonoma. That bike scared me but was crazy fun to ride. I could smoke dudes on Kawi 750 Rs at the middle of a race. Slow as shit off the line. I could never hang with an original 900RR. They'd laugh and take off. The whole Tom Cruise salute. But a 950 Ducati? I'm pondering, Great review.

I've a 2018 Supersport S ...quickshifter can be temperamental with occasional false neutrals between 5th and 6th...I agree with the criticism of sound ..not deep powerful hum of other bikes, mirrors are crap too...BUT....ive 4000 miles done on mine in 5 months and it rides absolutely brilliant..the power is down where you need and use it..its cornering is just fantastic and the noise when your slowing down IS FANTASTIC ..makes you smile each time..certainly comfortable on long trips too

Bought this myself; it'll do a decent B-group track day and be good use as a commuter year-round, especially with the new six-axis IMU - I ride it in all weather short of snow or ice. The Aprilia is a good motorcycle, but it's cheaper for a reason - it looks and feels much, much cheaper, and if you care about fit and finish, it's not a touch on the Ducati beyond being similar in spec. I think the Ducati should have come with another ten horsepower or so, but after-market mods make that easy enough. Solid review.

Cheers, glad you're enjoying the Supersport. It's a bike I'd purchase! Thanks!
@danieloconnell4225
@danieloconnell4225 2 жыл бұрын
@@Englishbikerdan Definitely a great buy; the only real downside is the price - it isn't cheap, and in point of fact, is basically the same price (only a little less) as a Panigale. Given the performance difference between the two (not saying the SuperSport is slow mind you), I am rather left wondering why they are so close in price, but i suppose the Ohlins on the SuperSport are a good chunk of that. Other gripes are minor - it could stand to have a wee bit more power, but doesn't 'need' it, and the mirrors... well, they're utter rubbish, which is rather inexcusable, but this motorcycle is fast enough that you should seldom care about what's behind you anyway!

@@1MrBryn Absolutely agreed. There's cruise control on the Desert X, which has same engine, so it's just a matter of applying existing code to the ECU and adding a button. The BMW S1000RR has cruise control, as does the Aprilia RS660. CC is great for long highway stretches, and an often forgotten use is for license-saving speed control. So yes, it's a very very bizarre omission.

They are very similar bikes, position is very similar. The Honda is the smoother bike (beucase of the engine) while the Ducati has more character and low down torque, consumption is high on the Ducati Suspension and braking wise both are very good, hard to say which one is better, I would say the Ducati has a slightly better tunned suspension (is good on corners but a little bit more plush than the CBR on bad roads) Seat is way more comfortable on the Ducati, the stock CBR650R seat is too hard, also the pillion seat on the Ducati is better and bigger. The Ducati also has saddlebags options and a touring windscreen which is better for touring (although the double bouble one on the CBR is quite good)

@@Englishbikerdan I think one thing that can hamstring a contemporary bike - albeit the more expensive ones - is the electronics. The latest 1250GSA is apparently a bit prone to gadget problems. Which is mad, really - it's actually got a very simple engine and if it was as strong as its rugged looks like to suggest, it should withstand anything. But no. They've overloaded it complex shit nobody wants, and now it keeps breaking down.
@Englishbikerdan
@Englishbikerdan 2 жыл бұрын
@@Unfunny_Username_389 I think some of the issue is that people do want complex stuff on bikes. Take the VStrom for example, bullet proof engine, not too much in terms of tech and everyone either ignores or slates it as being too dated. I'd take that tbh over something with electronics all over it which will, as you point out, inevitably go wrong in a few years time!

I have bought a fairly high-mileage 2019 S model and really like it. Very comfortable, and the handling is amazing - a real knee-down machine, so confidence inspiring. My first bike with a quick shifter which I use for up changes, but still do it manually down-shifting. But I have had Ducatis since 1985. Compared to my 999, what do I think? Well, motorwise, I prefer the 999. It has even more torque, more power and is less revvy and probably better on fuel. I assume the 939 is more reliable (though the 999 was perfect for the first 10 years or so - I bought it from new). Also, while the mirrors on the 999 are sited to give you a great view of your elbows, they do work. The ones on the 939 are well-nigh useless and that is annoying. Considering that there is 15 years of development between the two bikes, I'm surprised that the 939 doesn't put out the same horsepower (it's probably about 20 bhp down) or is any more fuel efficient. So while I really like the 939, I already really liked the 999. A pity that some electronic gremlin has kept it off the road for so many years. The 939 is going to be far better 2-up and the OEM luggage is going to make touring a lot of fun.

@@Englishbikerdan They do still look cool and honestly, they are about all the bike you need on the road. The motor sounds a lot less busy than the new motors and it's gruntier. The clocks are a lot nicer than on the 950 - that big analogue tacho is superb. Riding position isn't as forgiving as the 950, but it's never really caused me problems and I've ridden mine from Switzerland to the north of Scotland and back and one day on a different trip did about 1200 kms in a day. It's not like the 916 where you have to be really bendy.

I test road the Honda 650. it bored me to death. has no low end or midrange power and no personality. I bought a 2017 939 Supersport with 2159 km on it and it looks like new, for less then what the new Honda would've cost. and the Ducati just blows it away. I feel like I am riding something special every second I'm on it. and the power delivery is really nice. and the stability and the way it holds lines around sweeping turns is great. and every time I walk up to the bike and look at it I get a feeling from it. The Honda should not be mentioned in the same breath. The only thing I hate about the Ducati is the P position with the key. which locks the handlebars but leaves the break light on. after the first time riding the bike I came back to a bike with a dead battery. and you need to take off the left side of the fairing to take out the battery. but there is a charging port under the seat. so if you have the charger with the right connection to plug it in. you can charge it, and you can also use it to charge the bike if you are not riding it for a long time. like during a winter, I ordered a non Ducati brand charger and I am waiting for it to be delivered. so I have not ridden my new bike for a few days which sucks. and I am hoping the battery will charge ok. otherwise I will be taking off the left fairing. the plus side is the weight of the battery is as low as you can put it on the bottom of the bike.

You could make your reviews more accessible to viewers outside US+UK by "translating" things like miles to the gallon to the metric system, even if you just flash it as text on the screen. Right now 94.7% of the world population has no idea if the figures you give are good or bad :)
