because Appalachia is where a lot of immigrants from the british west country ended up -- along with the Irish and the Scots. the southern accents are remnant of the 17th century british accents. dropping the g - in huntin' , whippin' etc was very british.

The best way to serve trifle is using a large spoon or ladle to scoop a portion into a bowl, aiming to catch all the layers if possible. It’s not as difficult as it seems, especially once the custard has set.

@@marybaker8582 in my cookbooks, that would be a cake that requires egg whites beaten VERY stiff (stiff peaks forming, and you should be able to make a lasting cut with a butter knife through the foam). The rest of the ingredients must be folded in gently. Angel Food cake is a good example, but there are other recipes that use the yolks, too.

So true @AA. We have no idea how good most of us have it. I'm just grateful for a flushing toilet and hot shower.

This thought was something I used to have in my childhood, before the truth struck that how poor I am. Kings in ancient times lived a really really lavish life. I don't think you must have seen their castles. If you still think that you are better off then I'm sure you are very rich

It just occurred to me after watching 100 of these videos that KZbin wasn't around in the 1800s and each of these videos would be worth their weight in gold. These recipes were kept secretive to ensure employment for house cooks. Makes it all the more special

I have so much stale, store-bought cake (I always make my own, but when you have a party people try to be kind and *bring* food even when you tell them not to) and I shall now use it for a trifle. Thanks for the idea, Mrs Crocombe's looks wonderful.

I like to imagine that the whole crew ate it and that there's a secret video where Mrs Crocumbe gets absolutely sloshed and tells us how to order a Dominoes, the Victorian way

I love these old recipes and I love watching Mrs. Crocombe prepare them! She's great!! Mrs. Crocombe is what my great-grandmother would've been like when she was young.
