Literary analysis, at its core, is all about observation.
Using Orwell’s 1984, I’ll walk you through how to do it. I hope that you’ll feel more confident reading, discussing, and writing about the classics. This kind of literary analysis is my specialty. I love it! :)

I use 24h time (curiously almost everyone else in America doesn't!) so it didn't strike me as something particularly odd. When I thought about it more, I thought this would give some insight into the next sentence for what our character could be doing; people usually work at this time of day, so we expect WS is probably at Victory Hall on business. However, like another commenter said, it is too big a detail to overlook. I also didn't interpret 13 as ominous, but rather just unlucky, which made me think WS is almost angry at the bad weather conditions, because they're in his way at the moment and he might otherwise not care.

Something I find very interesting is personal perception while reading. It makes bookclubs so much more fun too as you can compare other peoples interpretations. I think seeing 13h00 as military time is something that can change depending on where you are from. For example, I live in Belgium and here most digital clock use the 24-hour system instead of the 12-hour one. We wouldn't call it 'Military time' or see it as related to the military. To make such a connection we would first need to research the author's background. I love how you connect '13' to bad luck and that kind of ominous feeling, I totally agree. It definitely set the tone for the rest of the story.

Thank you I appreciate your videos. I am new to this literary analysis game but your videos are beneficial. I am not a student, just an adult learner who wants to get more meaning and understanding out of my books. I went to a terrible school and the words "literary" and "analysis" were never even mentioned. I want to learn more and be able to do more in-depth analyses of classic literature instead of simple summaries and prevalent themes. If anyone has any advice for a beginner it would be much appreciated.

@karyneribeiro6797

Well, by the time you probably did that already, but the key thing would be to find similarities and differences between them, basically, and then build up your analysis around these things; such as collecting things as the writers’ influences, historical facts that could lead the main events and characteristics of the works to be the way they are.

I noticed that you say it's just observation, but you're not just observing the book, because you talk about 13 being an unlucky number which I would say is a part of a certain culture, and not just from the book, so you are observing the book and the culture its from. do you have any advice on how to analyse a book from a different culture than your own (whether it's a different country, or maybe even a different subculture in your own country) without necessarily knowing the cultural things like that? Great video btw.
@englishnerd5580
@englishnerd5580 4 жыл бұрын
That’s true, and a good catch! You shouldn’t assume all cultures are like your own. When in doubt, check. Or just stick to undeniable facts, like a repeated metaphor in the story. Build from there. Stories from other times and cultures can require a little more work.

Do background work. Classics transcend time and place, but the art scenes in different places and in different places do often influence a writer's work. I suggest: 1. Read a little abt author's life/time period in which they wrote the book. 2. If you can find anything significant, like author was questioned for supposed communist activity/activism/they're from a culture that is v patriotic, traditional, focused on nationalism etc read up about whatever it is. 3.if all else fails, look for articles, critic pieces, youtube videos talking about the piece.

"Good literary analysis is observation" What if you have no idea what you're looking at, or looking for? LIke the analysis you went into about the number 13, being an unlucky number, or an indicator that it's military time? Or Smith being a common name? Winston being a reference to Winston Churchill? With these combining to make a normal person with potential?

What if I am analyzing a book like 'Ulysses', and I haven't memorized or thoroughly analyzed Hamlet, or all of Irish history? In the beginning, for example, Mulligan is described as having an "equine" face and his hair is like "pale oak". If you don't know anything about Troy, or haven't yet read 'The Odyssey' or 'The Iliad, then how can I possibly understand what I'm reading?
@englishnerd5580
@englishnerd5580 2 ай бұрын
Ulysses is famously difficult, with layers. Anybody tackling analysis of that book should be familiar with the Odyssey, then simply make observations, just as you would for any other work. Unravel what’s literally happening first. Asking questions will lead you to meaningful conclusions. No one can understand *everything* about Ulysses without years of study. With the right mindset, that’s part of the fun. There’s always more 😁

@englishnerd5580 thank you. I read it last year and am now tackling it with a guidebook, and also preceded by re-reads of Hamlet and Portrait Of The Artist...there is just so much that one must know beforehand. Just one more question - have you analyzed much of Faulkner? I'm reading Light In August, and wanted to know if you find it/the author difficult.

Don’t be! By not having English as your first language it means you will have at least one extra language, and many times several languages. Not all, but many native English speakers only have English, and no other languages.

most people count to 12 then go back to 1, but in the military, it goes to 24 instead of stopping at 12 and restarting. hope this helped

If you watch any star trek, the way they tell time is military time. "I want that report at fifteen hundred hours". Fifteen hundred hours is 1500, or 3pm. MIlitary time is the 24hr clock

OK how the FUCK did you come from 13 which is an unlucky? number? apparantly???????????????????????????????? to military time you do fucking realise that only the english language uses pm and am to say the time in germany for example you actually say its 13 o clock or its 16 oclock i have never heard anyone pull something out of nothing so bad. you also gonna interpret that if i say: wow what a cool table this is that must mean: ok a table is mostly wood that means he doesnt like trees because in order to do a table you need to KILL a tree that means he is pro globalisation and tries to help climate change? or am i missing something because everything that i ever hear from any person analysing literature always seems to be grabbed out of the thinnest air like me playing video games doesnt mean i am lonely but i bet you would interpret that as well for some reason even if this sounds aggressive i would really love an answer because i do not understand anything from what You were saying
