I'm glad you brought up the to + noun pattern. Many English learners say "I'm looking forward to see you" because they assume it's the infinitive, while it's actually the preposition "to," which needs a noun after it. You do a great job explaining. Nice work! 👏

Finally I found a truth about "to + base verb" case. I've been wondering it why? I only know "I'm looking forward to" form and didn't even realize that it can also be used for other forms. I've read several articles in Washington and NY Times and I was confused why did they make such a small mistake considering they're the big media platforms, now I found out I'm the one who made a mistake. Thank you Antonio. This helps me a lot!

And I just couldn't explain, I only said "guys, that's their grammar rules. I finally hear someone talking about the verb as a noun structure cuz I've seen many of my friends struggle to know when they should or should not use the gerund form of a verb; another insight could be that whenever you use a preposition you MUST use a gerund after. For instance: with the verb read When reading About reading For reading Of reading And so on and so forth.

Essentially, these are two entirely different constructions which happen to share a “to”. You know that modal verbs like “want” or “hope” take a verb in the “to”-infinitive, as in “hope to see you”. “look forward to”, however, is not a modal verb, so it can’t be followed by an infinitive - it’s an idiomatic lexical verb followed by a noun. “look forward to tomorrow” works, because “tomorrow” is a noun; “look forward to see” does not, as “see” is a verb. You have to turn it into a noun with the suffix -ing. It might help to imagine the phrase as having an unspoken “the event/act of” as in “I look forward to [the event/act of] seeing you”. Don’t actually use that version, it sounds very weird in actual English, but it shows how “seeing you” is a noun. The only time I would ever say “look forward to see” is where “look forward” is literal, i.e. point the eyes forward, and “to” means “in order to”, “so that you can”.
