That was a very detailed lesson Jennifer. How about this for a question for all the students: 'Can you write a short paragraph to give useful information about the Subject-Verb Agreement? When it's one subject, there is an 's' or 'es' at the end of the verb but when there is more than one subject, then the verb has no 'suffix added to it: The girl drives fast; The girls drive fast; Jennifer teaches English; Tom and Tina teach English; Dogs love to play in the leaves; Jennifer's dog loves to play in the leaves. Of course there is more to be said about it than that, hence the reason why this lesson is over twenty minutes in length. As we saw from your lesson, the 'to be verb' comes into play a lot in the Verb-Subject agreement also: We ARE watching the hockey match; Ray IS watching the hockey match...

The family visit many nice places: WRONG The family visits many nice places: CORRECT. Our group play soccer often: WRONG Our group plays soccer often: CORRECT. The senate debate the new health bill in the fall: WRONG. The senate debates the new health bill in the fall: CORRECT. We can see that the committee discuss a variety of issues: WRONG. We can see that the committee discusses a variety of issues: CORRECT. With these examples, we see when the Verb-Subject Agreement is written incorrectly, it's not always obvious.

Well, with collective nouns we have to have some tolerance for variation. Americans tend to see collective nouns as singular, but there are situations where individual members of a group are emphasized. Thanks for checking out that post. With collective nouns, it's not all confusion. Thankfully we have the majority of collective nouns being written like this: A herd of cows graze here. They often buy two bunches of flowers, A murder of crows perch together. As the nouns ended in 's' we know that the verb doesn't need an 's' added. Happy weekend :>)

Such software can be helpful, but it isn't sophisticated enough yet to handle all situations and recognize subtleties. Indeed, you're right. "30 saves" can be used as a whole unit, so it's then correct to treat is as a third person singular subject (it).

The New England Patriots are also popular. They're a football team, and the team has won more than one championship. So between American football and ice hockey, there's a lot to watch on TV in the fall! At 20:01 you said: "Some nouns may look plural because they end in -s, but if we consider it to be one unit, It takes a singular verb." Look at your example # 10 again. It has a sentence: The New England Patriots ARE also popular. Actually, I consider The New England Patriots to be one unite (team)... so...

Good question. American English speakers prefer to use plural verbs with sports teams, especially when the name ends in -s. I was referring to words like "politics" that could be perceived as singular or plural. As a subject, it's singular, though it ends in -s. You can do a Google search for "politics is like..." and read how people compare it to many different things. Brilliant exposition. Not just sva, it is also good piece on subjects and their different types. Of special note is background graphic which supports the basic discourse.Notice the shapes, colours and their combinations. (Just returned from a two week soujourn of London. Noticed the language nuances and intonations in the birthplace of English. Once you know the language of the place, the dive into the culture is so much deeper. I could get into the nuances of both the spoken and written aspects. Hello Anil. 1. You can use the Index in the video description and focus on the segments you need to review. 2. In American English, we use the collocation "play ON a team." You can also play FOR a city or a country. The use of IN may be more common in British English.

Only 5 points. Thanks for explanations, some of them were really new for me. But I was wery confused with the last one. Recently I just passed some exercises in "Murphy. Essential Grammar in Use Intermediate" and I saw the explanations: "Some singular nouns are often used with a plural verb. For example: audience, committee, company, family, firm, government, staff, team" and then "A singular verb is also possible" That's why I made a mistake at 10th question. --- I can't share team preferences with you, I’m a San Jose fan ;) unfortunately I can see only a few games a season due to the time shift, however I try to watch all play-off games by Sharks at live.

You can also follow the links to the other lessons I have on uncountable nouns and collective nouns. If you look at UK-published textbooks, they'll show you patterns typical of British English. American English speakers have different preferences for collective nouns. They're almost always singular for us. My family is... The audience was... The government isn't... The firm has been... San Jose has a fun fan-base, as I recall. The Pens won last night. Yay! I also sometimes take interest in the Golden Knights because of Fleury. ;) We can't always see full games because of my son's own practices and games. Also, the time zones can create a late start to a game for those of us on the East Coast. We have a subscription to watch Pittsburgh games. It's much more affordable than tickets to a single game. Great question. I think I'd avoid the number and go with a common uncountable noun, "Time's up." or "Your time is up." That said, I think people might say it either way. In fact, if you Google variations, you'll find results for both, even in printed media (filter for Books). People have different notions of time. Some see it as a whole and use "is," but more seem to perceive the minutes as individual minutes you're allowed to use and prefer "are." If I had to choose, I'd go with "are."

Hi Lucas. Both are recognized by Merriam-Webster. www.learnersdictionary.com/definition/shine Some still see only "shone" as the correct form. I'm American, and I've used both forms before. :) Maybe in careful speech or formal writing, I'd use "shone" to be certain I was seen as correct. Hi Sabrina. "All" just emphasizes the whole group. The two phrases "a round shape" and "round shapes" can basically mean the same thing. "Shape" here is countable, so to make a general reference we can use "a" + singular noun OR a plural noun with no article.

You may hear some people break rules and use non-standard grammar, but I don't encourage that. Use the standard patterns: I work, I sing, etc.

You're right. The subject closest to the verb agrees with it. Remember we should always place ourselves last: My friend and I saw a movie. You can trust my sister and me not to tell your secret. #1 works, but it's a little odd without more context. #2 Is the woman or girl not one of your friends? Most would name her: Our teacher, my friends, and I are going to the festival. #3 sounds awkward. Most would say "my friends and I."

Hi. "Each" doesn't change the fact that there's a compound subject. "They generate" = Both airlines generate.../ They each generate... Each of them generates 1 billion dollars.

It's also about the patterns speakers actually use and prefer. What do native speakers perceive to be acceptable? It is you who + IS or BELIEVES / It is you who + ARE or BELEIVE >> Both are likely used. In the end, I like the suggestion of rewording the idea to avoid the awkward choice: You are the one who IS/BELIEVES/WAS, etc.

I've said it both ways. I think "FOH-lee-ij" is likely more common in the U.S., but I was influenced by all the gardeners, botanists, etc. on YouGlish. They tended to say "FOH-lij." I chose one variation and stuck to it for this video, but in conversation, I say both.
