Hi, I have got a question. "Another photojournalist captured nagai as he lay dying." Do you think it is a reduced adverb clause? "As he lay while/when he was dying" And another question In this sentence "lay" means__,

Think of the participle as an adjective. It's further description. I sat there [happy with my decision]. I stood there [surprised by his answer]. I lay there [dreaming about my future]. The description adds on to the position: be in a position + doing what? feeling what? You could see it as a reduced time clause: I lay there while I dreamed about the future. I could also rewrite the other example with "and": I stood there and I was surprised by his answer. I don't see see that as a time relationship. This possibly could be a cause-effect relationship: Because I was surprised by his answer, I (just) stood there.
