Could the German language have influenced the RP accent? The Hanoverian dynasty was German, and Queen Victoria spoke German before she spoke English. In standard High German, there is no short "a" sound, as in "apple.," and German-speakers sometimes pronounce the short "a" as a short "e, " saying "apple" as "epple," "shack" as "sheck," etc.
@natianatia3519 ай бұрын
It might have done. After all English language belongs to Germanic group of languages
@x2y3a1j59 ай бұрын
@@natianatia351 But it doesn't necessarily mean that any Germanesque pronunciation will take root. Take for instance the tens of thousands of Germans, from all over Germany (regional accents diversity), and from all social classes (same diversity) that flocked to England in the lead up to WW2. Nowhere has it been stated that English people were starting to pick up on some Germanesque ways of pronunciating certain words. Much more importantly, the millions of Germans that continuously emigrated to the USA did not change the local accents (Texan drawl just stayed the same, etc.). It takes someone very influential, like Queen Victoria, for people to start aping her pronunciation. Had she been only the wife of some Duke or Baron or whomever, it would have never taken off. Perhaps it might have even been ridiculed. So, it's not the features of the foreign language per se, but the importante and influence of a specific person. Imagine Queen Victoria coming from Spanish or Italian background, den peepol might ehstar eemeetaytin di aksen.

Interesting. In German "apple" is "Apfel", аnd for germans is lighter to say epple (like in german word "edel") than "apple" or "upple" 🤔
@RedKnight2314 ай бұрын
German might have ended up impacting the speaking of English , in certain parts of America , such as say various regions of Pennsylvania , where I as a Pennsylvanian German am originally from . It's just that years of prejudice against such a Germanized dialect , especially stemming from the two subsequent world wars , has served to discourage the prominence of this particular accent . Still , among some people , such as my father , and his siblings , you can still hear this rather quaint way of pronunciation . It's just that for one thing it is considered by the general population to sound rather rustic and strange , and also for those of us who had failed to learn how to properly pronounce the "th" syllable , as a considerable number of foreigners have difficulty doing , when it comes to speaking English , our manner of speech was deemed by the schools as constituting a pathology that should be corrected by spending time in speech therapy . So now I have in time developed new more socially accepted patterns of speaking , that are not so stigmatizing .

Why is it every time I watch your videos, I get dragged into some ‘Pride and Prejudice’ way of life? I just finished watching the 2005 movie because of your influence and looking forward to watching the 1995 BBC series. Last time I read the book was in 1979 and may read it again. Anyway, I now know the difference between the RP and modern RP accents. This was a great learning video. But I have to admit, I love the modern RP accent more so than the RP accent. It is more balanced in politeness, directness, and pronunciation. I am glad you enjoyed your Christmas. Have a Happy New Year! And I am looking forward your 2024 videos.

Well even if I'm often torn between various British accents (don't wanna say which I don't like so much) and Irish accent, RP is one of the accents I love the most. Sometimes I'd rather make me an accent out of different accents from the UK and Ireland. Actually I know it's impossible and that it would take me a lifetime. :) Your video was great, love your energy and your effort you always take in your videos.
