Couple of points that may be useful: use an airbrush to spray acrylics. Use a base coat of white in coloured areas so you retain the colour saturation (except for black, of course!). I haven't tried this, but maybe putting another layer of tape on before removing the mask may lift all that fiddly fine detail mask elements.

To prevent under-bleed start with a clear coat to seal, and then add your color.

Great content! I like to use Mod Podge after the engraving but before the painting. Just a thin coat in the engraving will help to better seal the tape to the wood and help seal the engraved edges so the paint does not wick out.

One thing I would say that would make that product 'next level' and only takes 60 seconds: hit those edges with a router. Just a radiused roundover edge on a piece of wood really enhances the finish of it over a plain cut edge.

You can also spray your piece of wood with clear lacquer before putting on the tape (let it dry first obviously) . Then when you engrave the paint is less likely to bleed.

I've been playing around with a Two Trees unit, but being an older woodworker, If I want the best finish, sand the wood finishing with about 220 grit. Then, spray it with water, wait a moment, then sand with 320. It just takes a quick pass but the surface will be like glass. The water raises up all the fine fibers, the last pass knocks them off. On my best color fills, after the engraving, I sprayed it with wood sealer/primer, then sprayed/brushed in the paint. It leaves a nice even color that pops lust a little more. After removing the tape, wait a day, then one more pass with the 320, blow it off, then wipe it down with alcohol before spraying with lacquer or any other clearcoat.

The nice thing about this approach is that you can easily determine after half an hour whether you need another layer of acrylic paints or not. A buddy who works a lot with vinyl cutters uses a cheapo set of actual dentist tools to weed out parts of the mask, low-quality stuff you wouldn't want anywhere near your mouth but is perfect for detail work like that.

I've been watching a lot of videos to try and get a handle on were to start. Never understood what they would mean by masking and never knew what type of paint to use. They tell you to mask and then paint but... Anyway, I want to thank you for taking the time to explain the very basics of this project. You've cleared up quite a few questions that I had. Looking forward to searching and watching more of your videos. I've already hit the subscribe button. Thanks again.

One other thing to consider, is to spray the clear coat on the wood before masking to stop the bleed of the paint. You would want to let that stand in open space for a day so that it doesn't gas off in the laser.

I found one alternative to weeding is to roll some painters tape around your hand and drag it across the surface like you were cleaning lint off of clothing. It will peel off most of the little pieces of masking. Won't work on acrylic and some other surfaces because It will leave some adhesive residue.

I use a similar technique when making signs with my CNC. I first spray my wood with a sealer (clear lacquer for interior projects or spar urethane for exterior projects). I then apply a strip of Oramask 951 (instead of painter's tape). Once carved, I reapply a thin layer of sealer to the exposed wood. By sealing the wood, I can use spray acrylic paint without concerns of bleeding. I'm looking at a Xtools S1 in the near future. I didn't think about using the same technique for the laser carvings until this video. Great work!

I haven't tried this myself yet, but I heard from a reliable source (Bob at ILTMS) that if you put on a quick coat of clear finish BEFORE you use paint, it will help prevent bleeding under the masking tape! That way you don't have to spend extra time sanding off paint bleed. :)

Ormask works great too. While this is done with a laser, the process also works on a cnc. I do it all the time. Where it differs is the fact a laser can cut hair fine lines but the size of the bit is the limit on a cnc.. In BOTH cases give everything a shot of say rattlecan lacquer. It dries in about an hour and it prevents the paint from wicking into the grain. I usally use the acrylics paint and after the mask is removed I shoot a coat of flat or semigloss laquer over everything, I also use completely different software but the results are the same.

I use the blue tape as well, I have various widths all the way up to 8" (so single piece would cover the piece you did).

Your Video explains the process better than other videos I've seen, very good job. I am planning on using your technique to Laser a 6 1/2" Compass Rose into a small Table Top, made from Maple and stained prior to the Laser process. The original plan was to use a CNC Machine and Black Epoxy, but I think the Laser maybe better.

Pretty nice. The 3M blue tape seems to hold pretty good! The clear coat must help alot staying good for a long time
