Such great clear explanations! I find it really helpful to look at what UP actually means. When you understand this, you can understand any phrasal verbs with up 😊There are 5 key meanings to UP in phrasal verbs, I usually put them into these groups - 1. Increase or improving 2. Completion, disorganisation or stopping progress 3. Approaching 4. Out of bed 5.Create, prepare or start. I think nearly all UP phrasal verbs can go into these categories. Apart from the obvious ones that are simply about an upward movement (but I think you can debate whether they are really phrasal verbs). These are just my observations 😁

I'd never heard the term " phrasal verbs " before. I believe they were called ' compound verbs ' when I studied English Grammar for O - level in 1951. I also studied German - a language rich in compound verbs [ not mention compound nouns ! ]. which has a similar system but are split into separable and inseparable compounds. In the separable verbs the attached particle floats around the sentence [ as in English ], but in the inseparable verbs they stay attached. An example of the latter would be ' understand '. As a matter of interest in German the word for understand is also an inseparable verb ' verstehen ' and ' stehen ' on its own means ' stand '. There's another verb associated with ' up ' - that is ' let up ' and I remember seeing a traffic sign in Holland which was ' LET OP '. Regarding ' wash up ' there are interesting subtleties and differences. In American English ' wash up ' means to wash yourself. whereas in UK it means to wash dishes. The example in the piece mentions ' the washing up ' - a gerund in the UK, but which would be meaningless in the US. A final point: having studied German and also French, it never ceases to amaze me how arbitrary prepositions are - both in their use in compound verbs, but also as actual propositions which indicate position or direction. Thus the German ' aus ' can mean out, up, from ... as can auf, zu, ... As for French they have ' a ' and ' de ' which are heavily overworked, particularly ' de '. The reason I've indulged in this diatribe is that I strongly believe that the best way to understand a language is to know at least one other language.
