I started reading 2 years ago at age 40. In two years I have discovered how uneducated I was, to having a different outlook at life as a whole...All because I started reading things. I regret all of the years I lost wondering through the world not being present, but I have to be thankful that I'm now finding my way. It's never too late ppl ! :)

When I was learning German 🇩🇪, it took me some time to build the confidence to read a book. I was trying to read magazine articles very early. They were a bit easier in that they were shorter and I could choose to try to read something I liked and had some knowledge about already. The tabloid style 📰 were best because they generally do not use complex language. I could even work my way through "professional" material because they were shorter and focused 🔎 on a particular subject matter. Later I picked up a Young Adult novel 📖. It was challenging at first. I started out looking up words, then marking them for later 🖍. After a while, I decided just to bulldoze my way though 🚧 because it was to much effort to keep interrupting the process. I found that as I continued, I understood more by virtue of exposing myself to the material. I could infer definitions by context and was so excited when I finished! 🎉

I think I read a lot faster than most other people, even faster than average native English speakers. But I think this bad habit, reading fast, messed up my English. First off, I read fast because I want to get the contents of the books asap, which made me lazy looking up the dictionaries for correct pronunciation. I catch the meaning s of new words in the context of the text or passage instead of looking up for proper pronunciation. Also, I have to read the same book several times for I miss a lot at first or second round of reading. Reading fast helps to catch the overall contents of the books fast and efficient. But when it comes to scientific and technical subject matter, it only slows down and hinders my concrete and solid understanding. I always advise my son to read slow, but diligently. Reading slow is not slow. It saves me tremendous time and frustrations. I always whisper to myself, "Tom, read slow, if you don't want to read it again!"

My advice to you is :read and underline (with a pencil!) unfamiliar words that appear at least twice. After you finish reading the book , please look up the translation of the underlined words in dictionary (a book or a digital dictionary on your computer or on your cell phone). You can write the translation with a pencil beside the word .

I agree, he is a great & patient teacher. I wish I had a teacher like that in school...since I was really bad at English. Unfortunately I didn't find any video yet, that taught me something new. I taught myself English by watching movies & series with English Subtitle, every day, many hours...years over years. I can read English extremely fast because of it. I don't even say the words in my head, I just look at the sentences briefly (like talking a picture of the whole sentence) & I understand. I learned grammar, vocabulary etc without actually learning. The fun part was, that the movies/series themselves weren't in English, they were another foreign language (e.g. Japanese, Korean, Chinese) which I learned with reading the English Subtitle. So, I was able to learn 2 foreign languages at once. Very effective for lazy people haha. I took a couple of years, but now I can understand e.g. Japanese 95%, when watching movies/series & don't even need any Subtitle anymore. So, I can recommend doing that. Of course to put the reading & the pronunciation together, watching movies/series which are actually in English should be added. But I never used Subtitles for that...but for people who have problems, it's surely useful.

Wow. Finally someone who's reading just like I do! I do read books paragraph by paragraph - I mean, I do read books not by reading each word but just by looking at the text ))
