A good way to remember the kitchen rule is if you were in the kitchen in the "past", "present" or "future" it is a kitchen fault. PAST......if you are in the kitchen, jump up, hit the ball out of the air without letting it bounce, and you land outside the kitchen, it is a kitchen fault. PRESENT.......if you are in the kitchen and hit the ball out of the air without letting it bounce, obviously this is a kitchen fault. FUTURE........if you are outside of the kitchen, jump up, hit the ball while you are in the air without letting it bounce, and you land in the kitchen, it is a kitchen fault.

PPA uses the USAP ruleset for amateur play, however, for PRO play there are a few differenses. The drop serve being one of them. The USAP adopted the drop serve in 2021, however PPA never adopted it for PRO play. As far as I can tell the 2024 beta rules have to do with how and when the ball is released during a volley serve. Probably worth specifically calling out the difference between PPA rules and USAP volley serve rules. Many ams hear about various serve rules when watching pro games(using PPA rules) and think they apply to ams (esp throwing ball up on volley serve) who generally use USAP rules. So many people get this confused....

No, you are correct. The statement, "unless it's a serve," intends to excludes a serve that catches the top of the net and does not land in the correct box, instead it crawls over and touches the draped net. This would be a loss of serve. Any other hit (non-serve) this rule/ replay applies.

Thanks for the video. I am a little confused about the ball hitting the net rule. As the rule reads that you showed on the screen, it says if the ball hits the net drops down and hits the net that is draping on the ground it’s a replay. The net is not draping on the ground in your visual example. Actually, I’ve never seen a net that is so loose that it’s draping on the ground. It must be happening somewhere or they wouldn’t have stated it as a rule. I’m confused.

Basically if the ball hits the top of the net and goes over, it’s a clean hit. If the ball hits the top of the net and then falls down to hit any other part of the net below it or the bar, it’s a replayed point

The serving fault that seems to be the hardest to pick up on is meeting the requirement to have the head of the paddle below the wrist when contact is made. The restriction in the rule seems to be aimed at limiting the ability to get power and spin. However, without the benefit of slow motion video, it's virtually impossible to apply.

@owenallenaz

Did the ball bounce prior? Yes. Legal. No, then you hit a ground stroke volley and thus illegal. The arm motion doesn't matter, nor trajectory of ball. You also technically never "need" to get back. You can have a cup of tea in the kitchen as long as you don't volley. It comes up rarely when a player goes for a really short dink and can't make it out in time to volley and so has to duck and hope their partner covers them. As long as you don't volley you can spend the whole point there.

10:00 for the draping net rule, what would happen if the ball is popped up, bounces just on the other side of the net, and, due to spin and/or wind, the ball goes back over the net, and then, before the ball bounces on the other side, the player due to hit the ball reaches over the net and hits the ball into the net? I saw Ben Johns do this in a tournament about a year ago. In that case, there was no bar below the net, so there was no reason the point would be replayed. With this rule change, intentionally hitting the ball into the net in this [very rare] scenario could mean the point would be replayed. Thoughts?
@JasonTinling
@JasonTinling 5 ай бұрын
The net isn't draping (a net system malfunction), and then interfering with play, so no replay should be called in your scenario. What Connor demonstrated wasn't actually a draping net, though. It's what the rules refer to as a "deflecting net", a net that is not parallel to the plane of the net posts. The rules for draping nets are specifically for nets that are too long for the net posts, and so there is excess net material gathered on the ground. The rules (2.C.6 and 11.L.5.b) specifically call out the net being on the ground. If the ball hits that, even in the case defined above with the reach over shot into the net face, the net material on the ground has affected the bounce of the ball, and the point should be replayed.

out call....great video until 5:50 where you say if you think it's out (subjective call) when the ball is overhanging the line, (and you imply that you can't see green between the white line and the ball) but you "know" it's out, go ahead and call it out. The rule states 1. The ball must be CLEARLY out and 2. To call it out, from the position and angle where YOU are standing at, you must be able to see (in this example) green between the ball and the white line. In this example, if you are standing on the side line looking down it like the camera angle at 5:21 and the ball is overhanging the line and you know (subjectively) the contact point of the ball is out but you can't CLEARLY see a green line between the ball and the white side line, then the ball is IN because as the rule says, you must clearly see it is out using the criteria of the out of bounds color showing up between the ball and the white line. I like your video but you are interjecting opinion here that goes against the foundation of the rule that tries to take the subjectivity of the line call out of it. One has to study or look closely at the example you are showing here. In real time play, you can't call that ball out because your eyes are not good enough to CLEARLY see a green space (line) separating the color of the ball and the white line. The rule states the IN/OUT call if close must go to the benefit of the team that hit the ball, and not to the receiving team making the call. I think you have only added confusion here giving a green light to receiving teams to call the ball out when close. This is a tough topic and will always be controversial to some degree so let's stick with the rules as written....CLEARLY OUT + Clearly out of bounds color between ball and the line to make an out call from the angle you are viewing the ball hitting the court and BENEFIT OF DOUBT goes to the team that hit the ball, not the team making the call.

My understanding is that if the server's feet are outside the imaginary sideline when the ball is struck, it's a fault. Anything else, including the ball, hand and paddle, can be outside, as long as the feet are in bounds. Whether you call them on it probably depends on your/their personality and how much of a fuss you want to make. If its really bad, then I would say something. In a fast "hands battle" at the "net" (kitchen or NVZ line), things are going so fast that you don't have time to say to your partner "let it go" "it's going to be long", "let it bounce". Most good players shout "NO" or "OUT" because it's the quickest thing to get out of your mouth and half the time even that takes to long and the ball has already gone by or your partner has already hit the ball. On a slower shot or a lob where you have plenty of time and you think the ball will land out of bounds, it's best to say "bounce it", which means let the ball bounce so we can call it out if it's out and if it's in, your partner is still there, set up to hit the shot.

QUESTION: you said we can’t call the ball out in the air but, is that just for singles? When I play doubles with my partner, I have a good eye for balls going out and will call them “out” when it’s his play so he doesn’t try to drive unnecessarily… is that not allowed? Surely it is allowed, right??! 😫

On a drop serve, can the ball bounce inside the court? Is there a rule regarding stepping into the court in the follow-through?
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy
@CanadianPermacultureLegacy 4 ай бұрын
Yes, the only thing that matters is location of your feet at the moment of impact of the ball/paddle. Your drop serve can (and should) drop the ball inside the court.
@RichardFKeith

I still find the fact that the rules on serving use the term release but no where is the term defined. Some players hold the ball in their hand and then sweep the paddle against it getting lots of spin without ever " releasing the ball". Those servers say "Oh the release is when the ball leaves the paddle, if you can see that its OK". I say there needs to be a space between the ball and your hand when the paddle hits the ball, they say there is no rule that says " the ball must be in the air free of the hand when the paddle hits it." And the rule currently says if you can't see the release there is nothing about a fault or replay. Confusing.

Kitchen rule...you said "until the next shot...." when does it end? at what point does the movement into the kitchen on a Volley end, when the opposing player hits the ball back? or its a winner? How about the call of stepping on the the kitchen line to push off backwards for a lob volley but you hit the lob volley further back in your court?
@JasonTinling
@JasonTinling 5 ай бұрын
If you push off from on/inside the NVZ line for a lob volley, you cannot make contact with the ball until both feet have made contact with the ground outside the NVZ. If you still have a foot/feet in the air at time of contact - fault.

I feel like the carries rule is dumb cuz I probably get an unintentional flick/roll off of my paddle from a carry at least once a session and half the time it doesn't even benefit me. Also like who was actually abusing carries so that they felt they had to make this rule cuz I don't see anyone doing this intentionally and effectively and would probably be pretty impressed if I did.

Yeah... it seems that pickleball is hitting the point of no return. If there are TOO many rules, especially if they are nit picking rules, then the game ceases to be fun. I think that the "carry" rules fall into that category. 🤔

@johnrankin8071

In your scenario, once it spins back over to your side of the net, your opponent may legally reach over and try to hit it. If they don't/can't, and it bounces on your side, then it's your point (because from your opponent's perspective it's a double bounce fault).

In this video you stated that you cannot call the ball out before it hits the ground. This is incorrect. It technically is not a valid call one way or the other until it hits the ground. Otherwise its considered partner communication. It is not a new rule.

You make great videos. the thing I like is you get right to the point and don't repeat yourself ten times. But you are wrong I think on one thing...The WAIST is defined as one's belly button, which is quite a bit higher than what most people call the "waist". The BALL must be below that spot when contact is made.

You seem to contradict yourself with your comment on the "out" call. Please clarify. You said that the player can't call the ball out before it bounces but the rule in your video says that if a player yells "out" then it is considered communication with your partner. Maybe the difference is between singles and doubles. In singles there's no partner to communicate with so the receiving player should not yell "out" before the ball bounces. But in doubles, there is a partner and doing that would be fine. Please clarify. Thanks.

What if a ball goes over the net and because of spin or wind or whatever, comes back without being hit; who wins the point? The person to last hit the ball that carried it over initially or the one didn't hit the ball but it landed in the other court anyway?
@larryh77
@larryh77 4 ай бұрын
The receiver loses the point. It's his/her job to hit the ball before it bounces back over the net. He/she may also lean over the net (but not touch it) and tap the ball before it hits the ground even though it is in the opponent's air space. But your body and paddle cannot touch the net. This is the only situation where this is allowed.
