A limiter will help you bring up the volume & use a noise gate before the limiter if there's any unwanted noise. (:

@@Mrs.Suspicious So vocal signals from condenser mics have a disrespectfully low signal, so the volume is always super low. My recommendation is to 1. Make sure the rest of your mix isn't too loud already, which can make it really difficult to bring the vox loud enough to cut through, and 2. bring your vox up to -12 to -06 dB, as a general rule. You can do this by following the steps on this video to use subtractive EQ, make the vocals flat, and then use compression to level the vocal and bring it up to a volume that works in your mix (with post-gain). I second what DIVlDED (@divLded) said. Using a limiter can be a big help. I tend to limit my vox after EQ, compression, and saturation. But yes, noise gates are a lifesaver.
