I'm trying to use this missle as a chaser to catch fleeing viggens. My current loadout 1xR3R for head-on and through clouds 1xM13M1 for chasing 2xR60 for dogfights.

I love videos like this. Especially featuring old fashioned Cold War east block hardware. Can’t wait for the 23. However, even viewing this on a big screen I often have trouble seeing the opponents when not above horizon. Something Im notoriously bad at in DCS while Enigma almost knows where to look and zoom into. Clearly he can see them. Always switching between stair and VR back and forth for years now and still can’t even decide which one to stay with

Welcome to the reality. It is not suppose to be easy to spot things. That is why it is that "lose sight, lose fight" as when it happens, it is extremely difficult to reacquire a target. Sadly ED made it more unrealistic in 2.9 with new dots. And one thing that really makes it bad, is that HUD/gunsight is incorrectly simulated in it by not requiring proper eye box (it is about 15x10 cm area where you need to keep your eyes to see what is in HUD).

Yes you are right, I wouldn’t mind if it was difficult for everyone. But so many if not most people (incl Enigma) seem to manage it anyway to see aircrafts. That’s why it’s so frustrating. I’d like to be able to keep up in this field

@@Bisch1977 gaining experience and skill in the sim helps, with time you'll get better at spotting targets. IMO, i use VR and its actually easier to spot, compared to 2d. but your mileage may vary

@@Bisch1977 same, i've played a long time (not as long as you though!) and I always had trouble spotting. once i got a reverb G2, it was night n day vs my old riftS and trackIR. with many hours in the sim, getting better at noticing little flecks moving across my eyes. trying to see things in motion helps too.

R13 is strikingly similar to the sidewinder. Yes i know its copy, but it's less different than the R60.

It's actually so similar that its components are interchangeable.

R-60 is totally different missile. It was the most agile missile until R-73 came out, and then R-73 was before Python 5 got in service 2003-2005. The R-60 main benefits is that it is very agile, and can be used on targets under 300 meters, where Sidewinder can't as it requires 5 seconds (about 2.5 km) separation acceleration to arm the warhead. This is not simulated in DCS, as neither is proximity fuses that are required to really hit targets, as rarely does AAM impact the target, main method is to get missile fly parallel to target and then explode as the fragments pattern will then act like shotgun that will take the engine catastrophically out. This effective distance depends altitude, as fragments needs to fly same way. At low < 3 km altitude it can have effective range like 7-10 meters, but at 15-20 km altitude it can have 15-25 meters. Larger warheads in larger AAM can have at high altitude effective range like 150-250 meters. So you really can't escape those missiles as they will destroy fighters. Those proximity fuses can have 30-50 meters own detection range, but as usually those are commanded to explode, it can happen 100-150 meters from the target. If DCS would simulate proximity fuses and fragmentation warheads, the missiles could be made more realistic by not requiring them hit target (unrealistically accurate now), and they would become multiple times more deadly as they would do more damage even when "missing", as you might not get destroyed, but you are done. This is why guns were critical for F-4 etc as Sidewinder missiles warhead arming didn't support close range firing, so wasting missile for nothing really. And if DCS supports finally fragmentation, it will end these kinds chases, as you totally don't want to fly behind a target you are shooting, as all pieces will get in your air intake and kill your engine, or get through sheet metal and impact something critical in your plane and kill you. Too many players got custom to fly through clouds of fragments, be it ground bombs exploding and killing every plane 300-800 meters above impact point, or missiles and gun HE shells ripping air target ahead in pieces. The R-60 challenge is it's short range, limiting it to about 1.5-2 km in chase range, and 8 km in head-on. The warhead is tiny, that it likely only damages target, instead making it go pieces. But it is enough.

Worth noting that only now after 2.9's release does the R-13M or M1 actually offer a range advantage over the R-60, after ED reworked the missiles to better match real parameters. Previously they had *worse* range than the R-60 at all altitudes.

While DLSS has made things better, 2.9 has absolutely sucker punched the server performance. So individual client performance is better but its killing servers really badly rn

The R-60M is certainly better if not for shorter legs but regular rear-aspect R-60... even if it can turn tighter those shorter legs really hamper it. The longer range of the R-13M1 makes it more of a trade-off rather than a straight downgrade. You actually get something back in return for using them, range. You can either have missiles that can pull harder or longer range. Both have their uses but you have to choose.

Using older, lesser weapons is always more fun, because if you get a kill, it’s far more thrilling. Compare getting a kill with an AIM-9X w/ JHMCS to getting a kill with an AIM-9B and actually maneuvering your aircraft.

Hey enigma. May I ask how do you control the mig21 that magnificently, without exceeding the aoa limiter. May I ask what are your joystick axis settings and the joystick you are using. I am using a t16000m and every time I pitch up the mig starts to wobble.

I usually take 2 R13M1 on the inner pylons and 2 R60 on the outer and jettison the R13M1 missiles if I get into a compromised position

I just watched your old videos and thought. You can try to make Cold War server is Warthunder, I know how it sounds, but u have all needed planes there, u can make it in sim battles and there is a way to make it work without grinding all the vehicles

What happened to the american enigma server? Edit: I have played dcs for a very long time, and though typically ping doesn't matter, in VR high ping is a death sentence. Can't even take off because one second I'm good, and the next page spike I am in flames. I am also on the other side of the world from germany, so it isn't just "a little bit higher" I appreciate everyone's input. Thank you.

Ping is basically irrelevant in a flight sim and even in an FPS, anything below 200-250 isn't that bad. All the DCS players outside the US (me included) managed just fine before and will manage just fine now.
