Video from our first trek in India: • Trekking Kunzum La to ... (video from Stok Kangri coming...)
(UPDATES BELOW) Hey everyone! This is my first review video, so please be gentle! I know this is going to come up in some contorted way, so--the purpose of this isn't to exclude men, but rather gives females (or cold males!) peace of mind that their fears of drafts, not having their back covered, etc, aren't warranted. I hope it's useful to everyone!
00:00-06:50 Is going over the features and how to choose the right dimensions for you (it is a custom bag!)
06:50-10:18 Is the actual review part with how I've found the product (sorry, wind got crazy).
Specs: Short length, standard width, 800 fill, 10F/-12C, 20oz. MRSP ~$350 US (and WORTH IT). I compared this quilt against every bag that is being sold at MEC--and this still outperforms (warmth, down fill, weight) the bags being sold for over $800!
UPDATES:
I have now used this bag in below freezing temperatures (-10C or so), and have found no problems! This quilt is hands down warmer than my -18C North Face bag (weird, since this one is only -12C). I've used it on two 2 week treks (one in Indian Himalayas, one along the Drakensberg in South Africa/Lesotho), and I can only gush at it's performance, weight, warmth, etc!

Thank you so much for the female review! It's exactly what I was looking for! To be clear, when the bag worked in ~14F temps, were you all bundled up with clothes underneath or was that the bag's performance on its own? Also, have these locales been dry or humid environments?

Awesome point, I'll definitely include an update about that! In general, it was just super toasty on its own. I would only sleep in a cheap Costco baselayer top and bottom, usually with a toque (or winter hat as its known elsewhere!) So, the two trips I used the quilt on (2 weeks for each of them) were vastly different in terms of temperature/humidity. The entire India trip (which is where this was filmed) was NOT humid at all, crisp. There it went down to probably -10C, and I was all good--everyone else slept cold, first time in my life I was the warmest of the group (I didn't even know how cold it was overnight, friends told me in the morning!). Now...the Drakensberg in South Africa/Lesotho was very different! It was much damper, and several of the nights were super stormy and we were just socked in with the clouds. So, damp and cold--coldest night just dipped below freezing, but in general felt colder from the dampness! Those nights it rained/surrounded by clouds I was pretty chilled by the time I went to bed, so I slept in the baselayer + the Atom LT (that I am wearing in the video). However, I ended up sweating after a few hours, so eventually just went to the baselayer and was fine! I hope this was helpful, let me know if you have any other questions!

For those women who sleep cold - That 3.9R Neo Air will not be sufficient down to 20 degrees, in particular, for women who sleep cold. The Xtherm would be much better. The 3.9 rating realistically is good to about 30-35 degrees. If you get a 20 degree bag, and then want a pad that will get you down to 20 as well, than the Xtherm is much better. It is rated down to about 5 degrees. I have 30 years backpacking experience, and nearly every woman I have backpacked with, who got cold, blamed the bag or quilt. But after switching pads with them, and letting them try my Xtherm for a night, they said they slept toasty warm. The pad is just as important, if not more important, than the bag/quilt.

Apparently just not as built up. Now it's an obvious tourist destination for the weekend warrior, whereas before it was really off the beaten track. From my understanding (haven't been!) there are tea huts to stay in every night if you choose, very well traveled tracks, big tour groups, etc. In India that is starting up, but really just the Markha Trail (beneath Stok Kangri, 'behind and below' me in this video) caters to more a more relaxed/less planning required trek!

(R Yee) Just wanted to update - I got to take my new quilt out for several nights in high 20s(F) and even a night with 4-5" of snow. It was perfect, and once I got the right pad, it was the first time I've slept warm outdoors. I am a very mobile sleeper, but I never had a problem kicking the quilt off or otherwise letting in the cold. Thanks again for the detailed review.

Thanks so much for taking the time to review, and including the specs--although I don't see an "800" fill power on the EE site. Probably 850. And I love the tip for dealing with a down quill poking thru--kind of like an unexpected "stinger" at the end of a movie!
@f3reviews619
@f3reviews619 6 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thanks for commenting. Actually a super cool thing is that after I got my quilt, EE got a better price on their down supplier, and so their base product became the 850 fill (while remaining the same cost as the previous 800 fill!). I thought that was super cool of them. Haha and ya about the down quill--we pay a pretty penny for this gear, so it's nice to have a few hacks to add to the products longevity! Happy camping!

Haha lucky! They are convenient for that...;) I am pretty terrible with colours and matching...for me I think the orange/purple combo would have been great if the orange was the dark kind. But since I wanted 20D on the outside I got the light orange. The navy is nice, but the two colours might blend. Haha but seriously don't listen to me, I am a bold stylist :P. Thank you for your good female and informative review. I am around the same size as you and I am also easily getting cold, so I bought a good pad and sleeping bag. I have the Nordisk Oscar +5 degree sleeping bag only 500gram and Therm-A-rest Neoair Xterm Regular with r-value 5.7. My pad is so good and my zipper in my sleeping bag i so short, that I am getting really warm, when I am sleeping inside i around 18 degrees, so I was thinking about getting a Quilt, so it is possible to open more up and still be able to use it outside, when it is very cold and also when it is warmer. I was also looking at the same pad as you have, but I ended up buying one with a bigger r-value, so if you ever freeze then get the pad, that I have. It is really good.

You go girl, Himalayas! I watched several of this type of review before I bought a 10 degree, 950 DT, regular length, wide width quilt thinking it should be good to 20 degrees. I froze! I have an ExPed Pad that has always been good on trips with a sleeping bag. All was nice and toasty at 40 degrees but 28-32 degrees I ended up putting all my clothes on including my down jacket. This occurred on 2 different nights thinking perhaps I was just having a moment. So resolved to using this very expensive quilt for a summer hiking trip. Notified EE and only got the explanation that what I ordered is what I got.
@barbedstar6480
@barbedstar6480 6 жыл бұрын
I was surprised to learn that when they say '20 degrees' or what ever degrees, that means you can 'survive' at that temp. with the item. You actually need to add 15 degrees to be relatively warm. So a 20 degree item will keep you close to comfy at 35 degrees depending on what you wear and your physical needs for warmth. If the temp dips, grab another cover.

Hey! Sorry that I haven't gotten around to responding until now--hoping I am not too late! In my opinion, I'd always go warmer than colder. If you're warm, you can stick out a leg, use more like a blanket, don't use it at all, take off clothes, etc...lots of options! Whereas (for me!) once I get cold, it takes a lot of friction/layers to bring me back to a normal baseline. And from my memory, I don't think you save a lot of weight (or money) by going to a less warm bag. Actually now that I am thinking about it, I was initially going to go for the 20F (-6C) bag. After chatting with the customer service, I was convinced to go with the 10F (-12C) bag. Have used it in the summer now and being hot isn't an issue! Just open it up :)

Very nice review - you covered a lot of details not listed in a spec section on any site. I love that you touched it and moved it and allowed the wind to move it. Great indication of weight. And you're deep in the field testing vs your living room floor....which is always nice. Very useful and the fact that you're cute as well doesn't hurt a thing. Thanks so much! It was my first review so was a bit nervous, but just did my best to give an honest review of how I'd found the product so far. I definitely agree that "out of the box" reviews don't really tell you much more than what is on the website. I was striving to make this a field tested review where I could actually include my experience so far (when I was looking through reviews before I bought it, all I saw were the living room reviews and felt I needed more info!). Thanks a lot for taking the time to comment :) hopefully I'll be (slowly) adding more gear reviews!

Great review.......even for a guy I like the review. I e been wanting to replace my Kelty 0° bag because it's a tad heavy and have been toying with the idea of a quilt. I've looked at the Sea to Summit Spark and the quilt. I'm a side sleeper and I don't get cold easily. One question.....how well does it compress for putting in a pack....? And do you use the stuff sack or just shove it in your pack.......? Nice view by the way.
@f3reviews619
@f3reviews619 7 жыл бұрын
Haha I am glad it was useful to a male audience as well :D. If your current bag is heavy, you'll love this thing! I wished I had added a section showing it stuffed, but it fits PLENTY into my 8L stuff sack. Probably can get it to be about the volume of 1-2 Nalgene's (so I guess 1-2L haha) once fully compressed. So for your second question, yes I stuff it in a sack, and then in the pack. Don't want this thing getting wet or else it will be totally useless to you (wet down= bad news bears).

Great review. Looking for a new bag for an AT Thru Hike. The company was recommended so I am browsing right now. I have always used a mummy bag and like it that I am all contained with the hood. My first thought with using these quilts is I'm not sure it'll work for me with no head and open underneath. I am someone who moves around a lot while I'm sleeping and it is open so the underneath can be exposed because it it won't stay tucked under my body.

A lot of other written reviews on their website are by people who DO move around a ton, which is exactly why they love quilts--because they move around, but the bag doesn't slide with them. See if you can find any written ones that put you at ease :) They also now make something called a "hoodlum" I believe which you can add and it acts like the hood of a mummy bag!

@@f3reviews619 Yes, they now sell a "hoodlum" which they sell for about $60...It looks like typical good quality and might come in handy...Amazon also sells less expensive versions for about $20-$25, but probably not such good quality. Cheers!

Hi there, Thank you so much for posting your review...Very valuable information all-round! I am planning on buying the Rev-Hole-ation by Enlightened but am unsure of temperature choice and length. I will probably go with the 0'F model, as I live in Western New York state and like to sleep outside as much as possible, including winter. As for length, I am stuck between Regular (78") and Long (84"). I am 6'1/2" and like the quilt to cover my head. Question: How much does the length shorten when one closes the foot box? How much does the length shorten when one cinches the head opening at the top? Any suggestions? It sounds like you are visiting some very interesting locales...Enjoy...Cheers and happy travels!

@f3reviews619
@f3reviews619 7 жыл бұрын
I would say using both the straps (I only use the one) you should be fine if you're the same size as me. I moved around quite a bit and was fine--but I imagine if I was really winter camping I'd be happy for the two straps! I think the wide width would be just a touch overkill (my male friend who is pretty barrel chested has a wide)--however, if you're really worried about it and weight isn't your #1 concern, go for the wide! EE has a great return policy--if you don't like it for ANY reason (even the colour!) I think you can return it within 40 days :) Happy camping!

Thanks for you review! Couple of questions: Can you put two quilts together? I turn and toss quite a bit during the night, and I would like to tug the quilt underneath me everytime. and i'm mostely a side sleeper. would you still recommend a quilt?
@f3reviews619
@f3reviews619 5 жыл бұрын
In theory you can (my bf just got one and we tried), but since the top are button style snaps, there are spaces between them that can allow air in--depends if stealing body heat exceeds the bit of cold air flow! I am never a side sleeper normally (i.e., in bed), but more and more I am noticing when camping I sleep on my side a lot! I find I actually have tons of space at the width I bought this quilt at and only recall needing to "re tuck" once every couple of nights. We just went trekking in Bolivia for two weeks and same story--barely ever felt like I had a draft or needed to tuck it in excessively. If you have broader shoulders, consider getting a wider quilt to give yourself some wiggle room (literally!). Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

Great review. Seems like lots of trouble to go through just to not have a sleeping bag. I believe the Quilt system is a great idea for three seasons. Get yourself a sweet bag and be comfortable, in those conditions anyway. By the time you tie the whole thing up, you may as well have a bag. Killer tip at the end. Cheers to your awesomeness...

Thanks so much for the review. My family and myself have been day hikers and car campers. We are going to try some overnight hikes this summer, and I have been been debating a bag vs a quilt. I am a side sleeper and I just don’t think I would find a mummy bag to be comfortable. Thanks so much for the female perspective.

Haha I think maybe I'd mix it up...I LOVE the purple, but the orange was a touch lighter/paler than what I was expecting. Honestly though, its just aesthetics! Only thing to consider is the "denier" factor (unit of textile msrmt)--some of their colours are 10D (like the purple), some are 20D (like the orange). I chose to have 20D on the outside because I camp with my dog a lot and just needed something a bit more robust!

Do you sleep on your stomach at all in this? Do your toes drag the quilt down too far down from your neck and shoulders then? I'm the same exact height as you (5'4"/164cm) and looking at either the Revelation or Enigma. Just like you, my height qualifies me for a short quilt, but since I'm a stomach sleeper I'm supposed to add 4-5"/10-12cm and go with a regular. However, I've had so much trouble in the past finding sleeping bags for my petite height and have far too often slept in too long sleeping bags that are hard for my feet to warm up and I sometimes have to cinch them off with a band or shoe lace or something. So I'm a little worried about going regular, in case that means that when the neck is cinched perfectly - my feet won't reach far enough down in the footbox to heat it up properly. And if the feet are perfect in the footbox, I'm afraid the neck drawcord will go over my head and it'll a) be hard to cinch it down properly around the neck to keep drafts out or b) it'll create a lot of bulk around the neck/upper body area.. What are your experiences with the short and possible stomach sleeping? I really don't wanna have to compromise by picking a longer length and then struggling with the footbox by stuffing it with clothes or tying it off.. If I'm spending a lot of money on custom made, I want it to fit as perfectly as possible :)

Thank you for the review. I guess I don't think a quilt is for me, apparently I'm a total weirdo. I want my upper body to always be zipped up because I flop all around and I want my body cozy... but I want my legs free and my feet sticking out almost always.

It depends on other backpacks you plan on doing. I have a revelation 850 10deg quilt. I use it for 4 seasons. No need to buy or own many quilts. If it’s warm, use it as a blanket and stick a limb or two out. If it’s cold, sinch it up (with a good rvalue pad, warm clothes) and you’ll be Golden.

Great review! I'm 5'7" (1.7m), and EE says that I should be able to fit a short, but looking at you lying next to the quilt, it doesn't look like it will fit a slightly taller person. Do you think it will fit me? I don't need it to cover my head, but it should be able to cinch up just below my chin.

Hey Kenneth. Tough to say, I like the fit it has for me (I am around 162-164cm). How much more of a length difference is the regular? If you are sleeping on your stomach, I'd probably go for the regular--just trying to think, but I am pretty sure its about as perfect a fit as it can be with my toes pointed laying on my stomach. As long as you're not swimming in the regular, I'd go for that. I'll check with my friend, he's a bit taller than you I think, but I'll see what size he got/how much extra room there is.

What down fill did you choose? 800, 850, 900, or 950? I chatted with a young man at Enlightened and he stated that the 10 degree rating was 10 degrees comfort for the average male and for women, that rating would be good for temps 10 to 15 degrees warmer. What were the night temperatures where you were? You said you are a cold sleeper. So am I and I know being a woman, we do tend to be colder sleepers. By the way, I have been backpacking off and on since 1972 and rarely if ever get information that applies to women. Thank you for your review. I will be ordering an Enlightened Revelation as soon as I can decide what down fill and colors.
@f3reviews619
@f3reviews619 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there!! I hope I am not too late. My quilt is an 800 fill--however EE changed their down supplier and got a better price, so they gave those benefits to their customers by making the 850 fill the new base at the same cost as the 850! I was going to go with the 20F (-6C) originally, and after chatting with them, I was convinced to go ahead for the 10 F (-12C). Between the tiny bit of extra weight and cost, I think it is well worth it since it can be the difference between loving the product or freezing and cursing it! As for the temps, I think the coldest it got was when I used it on our trek in India (at the site where this was filmed) where it was about -10C (14F), and then I've used it a number of times since when it has been below freezing. I have found that what has made the biggest difference for me in terms of how well this heats me is how windy/damp it is outside/how soaked I am! The dampness in the Drakensberg was an unexpected factor. Just making sure your sodden feet are fully dried out before sliding in for the night, and sliding on some socks to start the night is probably your best bet. And your last comment keeps giving me goosebumps--I am super glad you've found it useful! Happy camping, please report back with how you've found the product :)

I bought a 0 degree, DF 950. I am not real happy with the colors. They turned out to be dull and dark, but oh well, I am backpacking with it , not using it for a fashion show. Thank you for the review. It was because of your review that I bought the Enlightened Revelation. However, I wish I had chosen the same colors you got.

What colours did you end up going with? Haha, it is very funny because I actually hated my colours when I got it too! Well, I loved the purple, the orange is pretty pale and dull...but in the end the denier factor (thickness of the material) is what made me go with the light orange rather than the nice dark one...Since then I also got an orange sleeping pad, so lots of orange! But ya, once you're out there, you don't spend much time worrying about the colour :)

@@f3reviews619 6 years later, I noticed you asked a question that I did not see. I got the Aegean and purple. The Aegean showed up as vibrant on EE website and very dark and dull in person. The purple was not the brighter purple you have. It is very dark. I have since ordered another EE quilt since in 2019, they started overfilling by 30% to keep the down from moving around and causing cold spots. Needless to say, I got different colors. My quilt is White Blaze and Robin Egg blue (more like turquoise). I am pleased. Hope you are still traveling the world.

Thank you for a great review! I have a question, how much space do you have in the foot area? Are your feet touching the bottom, if you have it all sinched? Or can you point your feet? Thanks
@f3reviews619
@f3reviews619 6 жыл бұрын
I can still point my feet (like when I am laying on my stomach), but it is fairly tight depending on how much I pull it up to my face. If it is cold I usually stuff a shirt down there (so there is at least enough space for a shirt!).

So far, yup! I've had at least a tarp over me. If you live in a dry environment you may be okay without one, but I would definitely suggest getting the 20 D colours (denier, measure of fabric thickness basically). When you scroll over them it will say if it is 10 or 20D. Just remember--down won't do you any good wet, so if you get sopped then you may be in a dangerous scenario! Haha on that ominous note...happy camping :)

Hey! Any time I have felt cold I generally just go on my side and then tuck my head under, no problem. My old sleeping bag was far too long for me (like for someone 5'10+), which ended up in a lot of trapped cold air, so I prefer the slightly tighter fit. But no, so far I've never wished it was longer :) If I am cold I just tuck my head under, throw on a hat, cover my nose, etc

I hike the PCT 2017. I had this 0 degree bag and i was freezing at night and i did strap it correclty. I came to the conclusion the the seller i called sold me a quilt too small for me. So i called them back after 3 weeks on trail. They told me their policy is only 40 days and i past it ( compared to a year for all other major sleeping bag companies) They didnt want to help me at all and prefered to let me freeze than exchanging it for a bigger one or give me the money back. Go for a feather friends, zpack or rei instead. Joel Beaudoin

Booo, that sucks! I'm not a rep for them or anything, so I'm not going to go apologize on their behalf. Do other companies exchange because of size, or just based on defects? I thought only defects, and size/colour is if the product is unused then you get a few weeks/months grace period. Anyways, that stinks that you froze, sorry to hear that! Hope you found a way to stay warm for the PCT (on the bucket list one day :) )
