OK I must first off say that something needed to be done in the 80's in terms of a new dispensation. Got that. The National Party recognized that. Some of their efforts were not popular. Got that. In the run up to the unbanning of the ANC and others, the release of Mandela et al, there was an optimism that the country had a bright future. Negotiations were under way, but, as it turned out the decision to hand over power to the ANC had already been taken and the negotiations proper was just window dressing. De Klerk was supposed to have said that had he not handed over power, when he did there would have been a blood bath. Well, he handed over power and there was a blood bath so what a good deal we got. In the referendum of 1992, voters gave De Klerk a mandate to negotiate with the ANC - which was just window dressing - and the rest as they say is history. Was De Klerk not being truthful in his intentions with the negotiations? Definitely. While I cannot remember the exact question, I believe it did not specifically say hand over to the ANC and majority rule. De Klerk did have the gall and temerity to say afterwards that hand over was the mandate he asked for. Either way, my impression was that hand over was going to take place. It turns out that in parliament at the time, the National Party had repeatedly said that they were not meeting the ANC and in one instance a Nat cabinet minister had said to answer that question would not be in the national interest. Oh dear me - very good liars the Nats were. Apologies I digress, South Africa's voters have a chance to change government in 2024, hopefully they do so. I will however not hold my breath as South African voters are very naive and gullible - refer previous paragraph - I would however hope that I am wrong and that other political solutions are sought instead of one man one vote in a unitary state.

I do not agree with the view that "Mbeki - great job". A lot of the issues we sit with today are as a result of what his government did, and the government before him. Take illegal immigration - those two governments destroyed our borders. Allowed the crisis in Zim to happen. Their mining policy was a disaster, leading to joblessness and eventually the ZamaZama crisis we sit with today. Zuma and Cyril was useless, but dont forget the mistakes that happened before them. Also, Mbeki's economic "success" was partly as a result of global economic growth and the commodity boom which supported our economy greatly, and because of the sanctions being lifted in the years leading up to this. But there are a lot of economic stats that went south in this time. Also recall that in 1998 the decision was made to not privatize Eskom, and then to scrap its capex program, including the pebble bed nuclear program. These decisions were taken by the Mandela and Mbeki governments.

If you are arguing against perfection, then you will always win. You can always find bad things or choices made by even the best leaders (Mbeki's HIV/AIDS drama is one). However, the truth is Thabo's period was the best time in South Africa's history. Pretty much all the metrics we care about were reflecting it (freedom, Ease of doing business, crime, GDP, debt levels, unemployment, etc). The economy was growing, creating 500k jobs a year (nowadays it takes 7 years to create 300k jobs). No one is able to take advantage of a commodity boom without the right systems and people in place, otherwise, commodity-rich countries like DRC and Zimbabwe would have become heaven on Earth and enjoyed the same massive growth, development, and changes during that time also. They didn't. Honestly, if we pin Mbeki's success to the commodity boom, then no country on earth can be said to do well. We can always pin their success to a steel boom or technology boom or oil boom or X-boom. Basically, nothing to do with governance and economic choices. It's all just boom based. Policies and leaders don't matter.

It is quite obvious to the people in the poor neighborhoods (and they are well aware), that there is forces behind the scenes in all of these major parties that is not really working and having the interest of their wellbeing at heart. They all there just to serve their own interest. Crime will thrive in these poor neighborhoods because keeping them drugged and their minds befogged and keep them in a state of fear of gangs that is raging havoc amongst them, suits these leaders well to stay in goverment. Cadre deployment is destroying government. There is nobody to deliver. I watched government deteriorating until I resigned, seeing that I was closed in all respects, educated and smart in my area as I am in my field of study ( Maritime) BA, BProc, LLB, Masters Environment, Masters Maritime Studies, Dip Marine Surveys, Dip yachts & Small crafts, Dip Legislative Drafting and Modules in Total Quality Management ( TCM) . I have been with the ANC - in exile and in the camps for over 46 years and the ANC was always against corruption within its ranks! By then the ANC was a principled organisation, clear with its mission of liberating the people of South Africa, black and white. So I am still convinced that there is no other credible Party and or Organisation that can bring a difference to our political situation here in Mzansi except the ANC . I don't agree with Rob's ideas about Mbeki, As he was the one that lost control of the criminal element that totally overthrew the ANC, by allowing the arms deal to raise it ugly head. Currently the Country is politically so bankrupt, no political party is an answer, infact at this rate even the best Candidate is likely to fail because we are focused on people than on systems that work equally for all South Africans, than for Big Organizations and Multinationals that kept quiet or benefitted during the sinking.

Interesting and frank discussion. The only hope for SA is that a strong and importantly cooperative coalition form to topple the ghastly incapable ANC off it's foundations. There is no excuse for voters continue blindly supporting the ANC. SA cannot afford a continuation of rule by a class of political 'royalty' based on blind loyalty. There are pragmatic steps that must be taken for SA recover from two decades of political mismanagement. The steps that must be taken require fundamental policy shifts that the ANC refused to consider as follows: 1) placing country before party; 2) revising BEE policy; 3) removing state involvement in business - Denel, SAA, ACSA, Alexkor, Armscor, etc; 4) reducing the size of government considerably; 5) curtailing illegal immigration.

There is only one thing we need to know about South Africa: the contestation between the unilateral US empire as represented by the DA on the one hand and the multilateral BRICS as represented by the ANC and MK (the much maligned Zuma made SA a member of BRICS) on the other hand.
