Hence why Manga and Anime have taken over the market. Not only is Japan not beholden to the grasp of woke political bs, but the fact is that after WW2 they became as capitalistic as hell. Finding ways to make the most profit without damaging their brands or names, which is a big thing for Japanese people as a whole. Just being associated with a box office flop in Japan could mean the banishment of that film creator or writer from professional work and destroy their careers unless they themselves had worked hard to the point that such a thing would not harm them aside from a simple statement about how it was the worst thing they as a professional writer or creator worked on. So as the 21st century rolled around now a days you don't see American made 2D animated films or shows that are made in different styles. And any that are made are normally made with what some have thought as templates from other works simply because they're easy to make. Whereas with Japan they've largely expanded both their audiences and talents in animation, with each anime while 2D generated, still has a largely distinct look for each anime with only using something like Pixar 3D animation in a very sparing way that has yet to really hit the fluid motion like normal 2D animation. From what I've seen such animation only is used for say monsters or certain characters during specific moments or items. Overall, this still just boils down as to how Western animation has taken a massive dive into going woke, and many people not wanting such things going to other sources for entertainment, and if that means watching Anime and reading Manga over Comics and whatever is considered American animation, then I'd say that ratio is 8 to 2 in favor of Japan.

For example, the scene with the army of the dead really stood out, and it is still the cencored version. There are elements from other Disney classics, yes, but it did try somehing new. Brother Bear not only had absolutely stunning visuals, it's also the only Disney movie featuring North American native culture. Plus, the realization that the protagonist killed, and I mean KILLED, the mother of a pretty young child is really heavy stuff if you think about it. Normally, as with Bambies mom, the killer is just a faceless evil, they drastically changed that here.

I saw the little mermaid a year ago with my daughter and was surprised by how brave Ariel was. She saved prince Eric the first time she meets him and he saves her back at the end. She’s very strong willed and independent. The story doesn’t need a “modern” retelling because it’s more feminist (in a good way) than any thing modern Disney writers will come up with. Disney exces don’t care that they’re ruining their own legacy. The more quick and easy money the company makes the bigger their bonuses (which is all corporate people care about)
@Widdekuu912 жыл бұрын
The original Grimm fairyrale was a very feministic warning over what happens when you give up your body, your soul, your mind, your voice and your life for a man that doesn't love you back. "(in a good way)" Yeah, there is no "good" feminism. Feminism is, in practice, just the push to get more and more privileges for women, often at the expense of men. Women are not equal to men, and trying to pretend that they are and to encourage them to be more masculine is a bad thing.

My main issue with making Ariel black isn't really about the fact that she is black, I understand diversity is important in this day and age, so I'll be more than happy if they make an original movie and story with a leading black character. No my issue with black Ariel is that The Little Mermaid is based on the story of H.C. Andersen, an important author in Danish culture and history, he's like one of the only authors from Denmark that has any real recognition on the international scene, so him and his stories are very important to us Danes, so when Disney decides to make HIS character black it feels (to me anyway) like they are trying to blackwash Danish culture and history for the sake of "diversity" and quite frankly that pisses me off. Imagine if Disney took a traditional folklore from somewhere in Africa and made it an all white cast to "make it diverse" that would not go down well. Why not just make those folklores from Africa into movies? Make the western world aware of those stories like with Mulan. Nobody gives a shit about Denmark on the international scene anyway, so it's fine that something that is important to our culture gets shat on.
@stitch77100 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I'm from France and I love old fairytales from Andersen, Grimm, Perreault, the 1001 nights... They are interesting and teaching stories and moments, and the fact that they tried to change characters that were white, while not daring to touch the other "races" (I really dislike that word, but I don't have an other one in mind) tells you everything you need to know about Disney's mindset while doing those films...
@Feja2503 Жыл бұрын
@@stitch77100 Yeah if its diversity we would get a white or black mulan (or side characters), a chinese, black or whatever alladin (or side characters). Or LBGT... IMO i dont need it either way, like blade wich they basically wanted to kick blade out off and make it about females. No blade is a badass black character, not about female empowerement. Even in the 2010s with DreamWorks making things like How to Train your Dragon and Megamind are classics to me vs today's garbage. Each Pixar movies each had their own style. There's a clear style difference between The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc, etc. Ever since Coco came out, all the characters look like they came from the same model. Not only that but EVERYTHING is 3D now. I miss the mixed mediums between hand drawn, claymation, and 3D. We weren't over saturated with the same empty animation today. More and more I find myself using the DVD and VHS player than using netflix. I'm hanging on to all hard copies of movies, shows, and games. People might look at me crazy for not watching any of the new star wars, LOTR, or marvel garbage, but it's honestly not worth my time. I genuinely haven't had any motivation to go see a theater movie since 2017 which is tragic imo. As an artist myself, I'm just crushed to see everything get swept up into political correctness and even as a woman myself, see all these garbage women characters that are so full of themselves. Heck as a kid, the first character I related to was Hogarth from the Iron giant. I'm so sick of this mindless garbage that people eat up. Intriguing. I am a dark skin male myself who grew up with Little Mermaid, Disney shows, Dragon Ball, Power Rangers, Toonami, and other legendary shows during the 1990s and around early 2000. I think the Little Mermaid film released the year I was born. I worked at Pixar as an intern in Summer 2019 in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, and I am currently an animator at a game company. I don't like how, whoever inside of Disney, decided to make Ariel a dark skinned person. It makes no sense. I am also someone who is only attracted to caucasian or latina women, and I probably like redheads the most because of Kate Winslet as Rose Titanic and recently Isla Fisher haha. I also remain single and avoid relationships. I have my good time on the weekends with a woman and continue working throughout the week. All of that aside, I am disappointed with the decision. It makes no sense to make Ariel a dark skin person. It also makes no sense that Rey kissed the man who was trying to capture and murder her in every episode, and the dark skin man who was by her side and rescuing her received nothing but random women thrown at him. They could not stand to see a dark skin man with a caucasian woman. Companies should stop changing the characteristics of legendary established characters and be more creative with original ideas. They could have made a part 2 live action film after this one where the beautiful redhead caucasian mermaid Ariel meets with a dark skinned mermaid in different part of the sea, and they join forces in the film to triumph over a threat or obstacle. Anything is better than rewriting history or changing the original design. It will only make everyone dislike darker skinned people more. I also think that is the secret agenda when these top people make decisions like this. It's quite simple. Change the color of a famous character and make everyone hate the new color because of that major change.

When a series or movie that we love gets removed from a streaming service, I remind her that we own it on BLU-RAY or DVD and she complains about having to change the disc and how inconvenient that is. Well, one could say there is a _modern_ audience because whenever there's a huge generation of new people, this new generation has new ideals, different humor/interests, etc. Meaning that movies have to change to meet the interests of this new generation, or modern audience. However, I am in no way saying that the people themselves are different. New generations still like good storytelling and creative content. She's full of energy and life. Even the stupid decisions she makes are still endearing and representative of her flawed character. There's real talent behind that film, and that energy translates to a palpable viewer experience. Current Disney isn't even on the same stellar map with their live-action work. I was born in the late 90s and grew up in the early 2000s. Thankfully, “the message” I grew up with was to treat everyone with respect no matter what color their skin is or what gender they are and to always be willing to be friends with people who are different. Even during the 2000s, I had Disney movies on VHS and would always watch them at my grandma’s house when I went up there for a visit. I remember my favorite one being Beauty and the Beast with Aladdin being a close second (though my new favorites are Emperor’s New Groove and OG Mulan now). I would always sing along to the beginning song! But now my love for Disney has shriveled up and died. I can go back to those older movies, but it only makes me feel sad because that era is just gone now. There’s no hand drawn animation. There’s no heart. There’s only computers. I’d argue that Pixar managed to put heart and soul into its movies even though they did CGI, but that magic also petered out under the influence of modern Disney. Originally, it was rare to see them flop and even then those flops weren’t too bad. Now, they were beaten by the *Minions.* This is a bad timeline for the entirety of entertainment as a whole.

The 2000s was still a fairly good and simple time to grow up in the United States comparatively speaking than today (pre-2008 banking and housing crisis). Homeland security and the NSA was also new and it wasn't quite as powerful as it is today where the US government spies, tracks and uses it's own citizens meta data, wire taps, and cracks down on the freedom of its citizens using its own governmental bodies. Also while the internet still existed, it wasn't quite as powerful as today where it often takes up a person's entire life. Smart phones were also practically non-existent throughout most of the 2000s with very limited use of social media (which has now become an extremely powerful force today and embedded itself into the fabric of our society), and people still generally had to engage the old fashioned way through meeting in person and communicating face to face. The 2000s was that transitional period between the 90s and what you see today. In many ways they got the best of the 90s while getting access to much of the technology of the 2010s and early 2020s without it overpowering their daily lives. It is magic. It's a series of still images on pieces of paper, which, when photographed in sequence suddenly become a three-dimensional object or character, capable of living, breathing, emoting and interacting with other objects or characters on similar pieces of paper. No other animated form is quite like it. It is baffling to me that 3D CGI has supplanted it in the West, when the latter has far more in common with (and should logically have replaced) stop motion animation. Both of those are effectively forms of puppetry, relying on solid models containing skeletal frameworks. Yet, stop motion continues to... well, exist (it doesn't exactly 'thrive', but Aardman and Laika still continue to put out films on occasion, and there's both Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, and the new film from Henry Selick coming soon ). Meanwhile, traditional animation with its inimitable free-form fluidity hasn't had any real presence in the West for close to twenty years (outside of independently funded films such as _Klaus_ or the work of _Cartoon Saloon_ ).

For the *realistic* lighting in the live action Little Mermaid, I'd write it up as creative laziness. You could achieve a magical setting by altering it with bioluminescent plants or animals in the cave. Or, considering this movie has mermaids and a sea witch and spells in it, I dunno, magic? Add lamps that glow in the dark from enchanted pearls or crystals.

Yeah. That's why I stick to anime. They do a bit of 3D mixed in with the 2D lately, but it's still very primarily done by hand. They use 3D and bits of CGI to enhance, not replace.
@Zac_Frost2 жыл бұрын
@Marav Reviews Eh, not as much as you'd think, really. A prime example is Megalobox. Sure, it was made using digital means just a few years ago, but the studio "retrofitted" it, if you will, to make it look like it was made in the 90's. And the new Dragon Ball movie being CG will likely not be a trend for the series, as that movie made quite a bit less than the last few at the box office, while costing more. Pokemon is still hand drawn before being colored digitally, Spy x Family uses a mix. The focal characters being done in 2D, with "extras" or background characters being done 3D. Berserk being redone in 3D was a DISASTER, and lost the studio a fortune. My Hero Academia is still done almost exclusively in 2D. Same with One Piece. The new season of Bleach will feature extremely little 3D effects. 2D animation is also a lot "easier" in comparison, as in anime, it runs on "twos" or at 12 frames per second when there isn't any crazy Sakuga animation. Sure, the artists have to redraw the characters every frame, but if you get people that are good and quick enough, that's not an issue.

I feel like Pixar is caught in an awkward spot, visually-speaking. They have a *distinct style* now. If they change it, long term fans will go They Changed It, Now It Sucks. If they don't, people on KZbin will criticize them for not changing it. There are already people doing better (more realistic CGI), so if they try to improve their quality, they'll have to compete with those people now. Cue the people complaining that "Pixar is trying to be all the *other* companies now." I don't think there *is* anywhere for Pixar to go, visually-speaking. They unintentionally painted themselves into a corner and now, since Uncle Disney owns them, there's no chance for them to change it.

This is why I buy the discs and books but backup everything up to HDD/SSD when possible. I used to have about 500 blurays - without recompression that's about £1800 in SSD's and worth every penny after they take up less space than 2 bluray cases, weigh roughly the same and provide me instant access to all of that material. With ebooks I buy them and then find a source to download it DRM free so that I can view it in whatever reader I want (Amazon Kindle is far from ideal for my eyesight problems). (also Kickstarter's for books often provide the delivered reward as a DRM free ebook in multiple format - well worth the investment) Either way I've paid for it and I don't feel the least bit guilty doing any of that whatever Hollywood wants to say about backing up films that you have already purchased.

@@chrisortiz7487 "There are books out there, TODAY, that were printed in the 1800s and are still in good condition."
