As choirmaster, I introduced this lovely Christmastide carol to my Vermont church as a choir anthem -- surprised that it was previously unknown to the congregation, but hardly surprised that we were requested to repeat it the next year.

Beautiful version of this Terry classic, one of the best I've come across. Usually heard with an organ, the orchestra itself sounds like human voices. First heard this sung in "Black Narcissus"!

In my church, as choirmaster, I introduced it with violin and organ accompanyment. It had never been heard there before, but it soon became a Christmas favorite. I very much like this version with string ensemble accompanyment -- the version in which I first heard it.

They sound wonderful, very proper production, but I can’t understand the text.

Your difficulty with the text may stem from the fact that it is a Middle English poem, with words or forms of words unfamiliar to the modern ear. A Google search will give you the original text, together with a modern "translation". Hope this helps.
