"In the 90s, Dragon Ball reruns were broadcast in the evenings, and I used to watch them before dinner. The story suddenly became serious since the last episode 😅 I was even more shocked at the time.

I already said that in another commentary but I will say it again, this arc marks the moment when i really fell in love with Dragon Ball. I think it was in late 89 or early 90, I was already hooked back then by japanese animation. Saint Seiya, City Hunter, Captain Tsubasa, for example, did great impression on 9 years old me, and also Dragon Ball of course, at this time there were big broadcasts of anime in France and I am lucky to have known this golden age. But when I saw Kuririn get killed for real, it was the biggest shock of my young life ! I do not think this arc is the best arc of Dragon Ball, nor that it is here that DB gets really good, because it was great since the beginning (and honestly DB was already becoming more serious since the Red Ribon Arc), but it is here that you knew everything could happen, and I love that Toriyama always tried to twist the Dragon Ball deus ex machina thing to put some serious stakes, even knowing that Shenron can resuscitate people. He always succedes to find a plot twist that makes you think "Oh shit ! Now they will never be able to use Shenron to resuscitate them because of this or because of that" and he always managed to raise the stakes even with the laws he instaured without breaking them ! I LOVE Toriyama also for that reason.

Ngl the first time watching this arc i didn't expect the Pilaf gang to be THE ONES to free him, that was a low move even for them lol

Woo! You are one of the few few reactors who actually saw the second opening. And i have to say i actually laughed at that Piccolo-is-gay joke XD you have to understand though, this series was being done as something that was forming what Shonen became. Characters coming-back-to-life isn't as established of a thing back in these days so there wasn't much "predicting" as to what would happen.

Yeah a lot of people will say dragonball z is the creator of shounen genre, even though it does go back a little bit further to like kinnikuman and a few other other anime in late 70's early 80's. Dragonball very influenced by kinnikuman though

Dragonball always has a bit of humor but from episode 101 onwards it becomes a bit more serious, there is danger from the new opponent

Actually pilaf found it coincides, while finding dragon ball, cause there is no way that he knew about Daimao piccolo because only 2 people master roshi and crane hermit knew about it. So don't blame emperor pilaf

The Piccolo Daimaō Arc (Episodes 102-126) is the story arc that many people say is where Dragon Ball started to get good. For those who disagree, how many of you feel Dragon Ball was already at its best even before this arc came to pass?

I think this is actually the second weakest arc from the original manga. Compared to the previous arcs, there are more narrative inconsistencies and convenient workarounds in the writing that make the tension feel a bit cheep at times. As menacing of a threat Piccolo Daimaō is, his introduction is a bit lack lustered and the character has a one note personality compared to previous antagonists in the series. What made previous arcs engaging to read/watch through, at least for me, was how the characters interacted with one another. We get to see different personalities bounce off one another, leading to comedic moments or making the confrontations feel more personal. As a result, this feels more generic and typical for shonen anime because most of the characters have to take a backseat from the action or become collateral in the action due to how much of a threat the villain is being built up to, all to compensate the victory the hero will have by the end of the fight. Part of the growing pains in this arc is due to Toriyama still experimenting with what he can do with this story format and while it serves as a decent template for arcs to come, it’s hard to argue that it holds up compared to his more familiar writing style from previous arcs and the refinement of this particular template in later arcs.

The best part of the original Dragon Ball were the tournaments. Outside of that, I liked the Red Ribbon Army arc more than the Piccolo stuff but the anime version drags too much compared to the manga.

@@animaechan being pure is such an extreme concept, i just thought seeking revenge would be included as an impurity i.e sasuke Maybe thats why Nimbus was blown up by Tambourine because it was helping goku to try get revenge. Just a thought...
