You mentioned music saving your life and I wanted to tell you that BTS saved my life. At one point I truly intended to...let's just say I didn't want to be here anymore, and I randomly listened to a BTS song and I realized what I was thinking of doing and how wrong it would be for me to do. I've never thought like that again but I still love BTS, with all my heart, because without them I wouldn't be here now. And my story isn't all that different from many other ARMYs, which is why we are so protective. They saved us.

Can confirm. I had the plan, the means, everything...and then I came across Epiphany live, my second BTS song ever (after the Dynamite Live VMA performance.) I completely broke down and bawled my eyes out because it was just the message I very much needed to hear at that exact time. Long story short, I'm still here because of that, them, and my fellow ARMYs who helped restore some of my rather tattered faith in humanity and for that I'm forever grateful. 💜🫂💜

I'm glad you're both still here 💜 I love that they have so many songs that can be the one that saves someone. I love how often they get their audience to promise to love themselves. Magic Shop still makes me cry, not because I found it when I needed it, but because so many other people have. And the sweet honesty of Epiphany's lyric, about being not perfect but still so beautiful, gave Jin a very special place in my heart. Imagine realizing you have the power to move people, and using it to try to move them toward self-acceptance and kindness 💜💜💜

The alleged ‘bullying’ in the military was not covered by the company, BigHit/Hybe, or by the boys themselves. We have to treat it as hearsay and not engage with those that spread misinformation. If something important does happen, they will always let ARMY know so that we don’t worry. If there’s more to their private lives that they don’t share, then it is private and we respect that. 💜

Basically one of the reason BTS got so much hate is because their success, coming from a small tiny company and outside the powerhouses of the existing kpop industry, meant that they were a challenge to these institutions -the big kpop companies were trying to stifle competition, and also media in Korea are often in cahoots with these big companies. It's the same at the international level - BTS have come up from outside the industry without taking the usual channels. The players in the existing industries haven't profitted off BTS' success because BTS have come up on their own terms, so there's fear that the BTS ARMY powerhouse challenges the systems in the US and Korea that control how music gets successful. You can see it still happening more recently in the last few years with some of the scandals with Kakao, Ador etc where there was huge evidence unearthed of efforts to sabotage BTS and Big Hit. There's a great video by boracity magazine called Bts vs Radio that highlights how BTS and ARMY challenge that existing power brokers by not bowing to corruption and payola and bypassing traditional routes
@sophiealka343113 күн бұрын
Its JYP, SM and YG in Korea as the big music companies, and Sony, Universal and Warner in the US and the West. BTS is outside on both levels. If you look at most pop musicians in the US, practically none come from outside Sony, Universal and Warner, so BTS are a threat there too

5:43 Yes! Exactly! I've worked in entertainment for years, those reporters on tv CAKE it on. You HAVE to wear make-up on screen because the lights will wash you out. Same with when you're on stage- you have to wear make-up because the lights will not only wash you out but people will not be able to see you. Everyone who goes on stage, you is one tv, who makes a professional music video- they all wear make-up. And even if that wasn't the case- make-up was never created to be gendered. It's for everyone. And the bullshit toxic masculinity of saying wearing make-up is 'girly' or 'gay' or inherently feminine; just shows how ignorant and misogynistic they are. So much hostility towards men/masc people wearing make-up is fueled by misogyny and homophobia.

Most people get confused about the Hagwon medal and the extension thing. OTHER COMPANIES used BTS name and accomplishments to beg for military exemptions for their own artists. The S Korean Government said OK, we will allow an extension, to age 30 instead of age 28, as the enlistment cutoff age, but only IF you have been nominated or won this cultural medal. BUT - BTS are the only ones their generation to have won the medal. It's given for global achievement in spreading Korean culture and language and most recipients are much older artists. It's like a career meritorious service medal, similar to the UK's knighthoods for entertainers. So BTS were the only ones who would qualify for that extension. So then the entertainment companies complained that the law was unfair and they called it The BTS Law, even though they were the ones who use BTS as their example. BTS and their company was never involved in this petition for exemptions or extensions. They were just used by these companies to try to get the law changed so their artists didn't have to go to the military at the peak of their careers and make the companies lose money. Classic coattail riding. In the immortal words of genius Kim Namjoon "Get your ass out the trunk" and quit riding BTS' ass.
@ashleyder91644 сағат бұрын
That's always a bit funny/sad to me because by objecting to the law, all these entertainment companies basically publically admitted that they don't think any of their groups will ever be as big or impactful as BTS is.
@faliciaforward13 күн бұрын
Just wanted to clarify a bit on the discussion about why Korean media tries to downplay BTS - it's less about them not representing their roots and culture (they did receive the Hwagwan order of Cultural Merit Medal from the Korean government itself, after all) but it's more about money. In South Korea, there are things called chaebol groups, which are huge corporations that were basically sanctioned by the government to be the main producer or entity in various industries. These chaebol groups are massive - Samsung is owned by a chaebol group, for example - and they have their hands in MANY different parts of the Korean economy by now. The "Big 3" Kpop companies (SM, JYP, and YG entertainment) are part of this chaebol network, and they or their parents companies own not only the entertainment companies that put out a lot. Of the major kpop groups you see today, but they may also own newspapers, TV networks, and other forms of media. Since Big Hit was NOT a part of these large entertainment companies, there are two main takeaways: 1. Big Hit cannot influence the mass media in Korea the same way other entertainment companies could. The Big 3 get major benefits to their own artists and their promotion just from being part of those chaebol group families. 2. Since BTS succeeded without all of the incestuous chaebol group relationships and whatnot, the large media companies CANNOT MAKE MONEY from BTS. When BTS succeeds, BIG HIT makes money, but the chaebol groups don't. These two factors combined means that the major news and media sources in Korea actually want to sabotage or ignore BTS as much as possible. They don't want BTS and Big Hit to make money because that money is then not going into the Big 3/chaebol groups' pockets.

I think there was some confusion re the conversation between the 2 Korean music producers. What they were saying is something akin to payola in the US. Korean music and entertainment companies (all media) have a deeply entrenched and almost incestuous relationship. Many producers are affiliated with one of the big 3 entertainment companies (YG, SM, JYP), so groups under their umbrella get preferential treatment not just by the music industry, but by reporters, journals, etc. Many Koreans never even heard of BTS until they started winning awards overseas. Because there was nothing in it for them (i.e. they got no $$ from BTS/Big Hit), they saw no reason to play them up and even mention them in media at home. Mind you, BTS has a huge ARMY following in S Korea, which helped and supported them but could not penetrate the thick walls of the industry insiders. To this day BTS gets little radio play, etc, because Big Hit does not do Payola. The channel Boracity has done a couple of videos about this. 💜

32 years old from the US and been an ARMY officially since 2018. I'd kinda researched them heavily for about 6 months to a year before deciding to be an ARMY and I had been aware of BTS as a group since around 2014-2016. I was always a hugely eclectic music listener, I'd listen to just about anything that sounded good but message meant a lot to me too. Most of my music ended up being more rock/metal groups. But at a point I started getting kinda.....fed up with a lot of music and the way it was going so for a long time I just listened to instrumental or epic music, nothing with Lyrics. I got into Kpop around 2012 and the music, visuals, vocals and everything else was miles above American pop music but lyrically it was the same stuff I'd gotten sick of in American music. So I did dismiss BTS when I first saw them. When I finally gave them a chance, it changed everything. I've never joined any kind of fandom before, not for music, anime, gaming.....anything I do. BTS and ARMY were the first and only ones I decided to be apart of. Their music has saved me countless times from my depression and anxiety. I even got my mother and veteran father into BTS as ARMY as well. BTS are just incredible people and Artists and I'm happy to support the art they put out each time, individually and as a group. EDIT :: That misogyny claims will never cease to irritate me tbh. I remember when I was still researching them I heard about this so I went to the song and was...stunned that such an innocent song had gotten such accusations. Meanwhile legitimately misogynistic music gets played on a daily around the world with people partying to it without a care or word. Like I respect how BTS handled the whole thing but the claims were BS.

The misogynistic lyric thing was just a total reach... I'm a female and not one lyric in their track (War of Hormone) is considered misogynistic to me.... the interview that you referred to as a great conversation... they were pointing out that the industry didn't accept BTS as they didn't use any influence from any label.. or promoter... or one of the big agencies... so they did all the work by themselves alongside Bang PD and their work ethic is what got them to the level they are at now.... they also wrote/write most of their own music/lyrics and their choreography is something that a lot of other groups would struggle with.... but because of that... the industry didn't make anything from BTS... only the group and Big Hit make money from them... It's been tricky for Army... we are seen as overprotective a fair bit... but we walk behind and alongside our 7 forever.... Thankyou Kyle...for giving our 7 a chance... they really are exactly as you see them... Also, don't believe everything you read about what's going on with the members in the military... there are a lot of antis and other fandoms who would love for Army to be rattled by reports of how our members aren't happy in the military... you just have to trust that BTS know what they're doing and have enough experience after 12+yrs in the industry to be just fine whilst they serve... 💜💜

I find it always sad when people say BTS had it easy, because I believe they are one of the most criticized artists in the industry, and also are they unfairly criticized . People often think that boy groups are controlled by large agencies, which leads to these prejudices. But it's interesting that you can categorize people who think this way into three groups: 1. Korean fans: Whether fans of other groups or ARMYs, most of those who complain for example, about "sexual" lyrics, are Korean fans. Of course, not all of them, but enough. This is largely due to Korean culture, but still, in my opinion, not an excuseas 2.I have already mentioned, fans of other artists, whether the artist is Korean or international, often oppose BTS. As you have also mentioned, BTS is so good that they win almost every award, which is why fans of other artists tend to overreact. They try to make BTS losing, even if it means choosing the second-place artist at an award show instead of their favorite. . 3.People who either have complexes, find it amusing to hate, or are too young to understand what it feels like to be hated. I am just a fan of BTS, but I still appreciate other K-pop groups or artists in general. That's why I cannot comprehend how someone can be filled with so much hatred towards people who deserve to be where they are. I find it fascinating to see even sports fans, such as those of Ronaldo, trying to compare BTS with their idol. This whole journey to fame is one of the reasons why I love BTS so much. I really enjoy your videos!!!💜

fellow ARMY's literally being Suga's shield was so beautiful to see and I hope that knowing that has given Yoongi hope and strength. I can't even imagine his mental state with all the hate he's received since the incident. He's such a strong person but he's already had to take so much in his life. I truly truly hope he's well. He and BTS in general have saved my life multiple times. Yoongi is not only my musical idol, but also my idol and inspiration in general because he has overcome his mental health hardships, giving me hope that it really is possible that it will get better. I'm so incredibly sad that he's being treated the way he is. But also really thankful that ARMYs have been doing everything they can to protect and defend him. I know that the other members are undoubtedly there for him too and I truly hope that all that is enough to get him through this. I know South Korea has its own culture and norms and values, but seriously... I want to really ask all those that have given Yoongi a hard time "Are you all that perfect? You've never made a single mistake in your life? Then why do idols have to be absolutely perfect? Aren't they people too?" Because it's not only Yoongi. K-netizens ruin a lot of idols' lives. Garam from Le Serrafim who could only live her dream for two weeks because of false accusations, Goo Hara, Sulli. I'm sure there's many more. Recently also someone from a boygroup called Riize (I think?) I don't know too much from that story, but I believe he's been outed out of that group for no good reason either. While true criminals like that inhumane ass Seungri still have so many delusional fans defending him. Like, I really don't get K-netizens at all, sorry. At least the K-netizens that do this kind of stuff.

Ive seen many groups come and go in my life but none like BTS, they have won over 1400 awards, that's more than Taylor Swift, they are 5 time Grammy Nominees, Artists of the year in Korea and America. Army are now around 1 billion strong around the world and we protect them because of the mistreatment they had drom other groups , their terrible fans, nd others who should have known better. The industry is scared of BTS, they are always trying to find the next BTS, there is no next BTS, they are the perfect storm of 7 individually talented men. They are all writers, producers, dancers, singer's, and have an unbreakable bond with each other and ARMY. They are also very funny, kind and caring. When 2017/18 was happening and all the hate, I thought that was the worse time as an ARMY. Social media was terrible….fast forward to 2024, and I now believe this is the worst year with the guys being in the military. the attacks on them and ARMY have amped up I believe in the hopes that they are not able to return as a group in 2025. The whole discourse regarding Yoongi/Suga is one example. It’s crazy, but not surprising after all these years. I’ve correlated being an ARMY with being a millennial at this point. I’ve been through some crazy shit, as both a millennial and ARMY, it doesnt make me as emotional anymore because I’ve come to expect it. I’m from Spain. I’m army because their music, the lyrics of their songs, their videos helped me in a very bad moment of my life to want to continue, to value what I have. I only wish them well as if they were my children, that they be happy and that they find someone with whom to share that happiness.

BTS has continued to adjust their lyrics when misunderstandings arise. The words for "I" and "you" in Korean can sound like the N-word in English, so RM has rewritten some songs to avoid that. Suga, not so much--he left "Yah, naega" in Psy's "That That". Though arguably that's even ruder in Korean than it sounds in English. He's saying "Hey you" to someone who is both older and his senior in the industry, without name or title or honorifics attached, when what he should be saying is something like, "Excuse me Mr. Producer Park sir". Editing to add that I'm 72 from Massachusetts and only ARMY for a couple of years. No fanatic like a convert, as they say. My favorites for you to check out: Not Today, Boy With Love, Fake Love, Outro Tear, Black Swan, On Kinetic Manifesto, Your Eyes Tell, and my favorite, Idol (MV, 2018 awards show live performance (the one with the traditional dancers), and the 2019 Osaka medley version where it's the last song after Dope, Baepsae, and Fire. BTW, there's a story behind the choreo for Baepsae--just be warned that it's a giant middle finger to the upper class.)

BTS succeeded outside the industry. They, and their label, didn't bend the knee and grease the palms of those in power or the gatekeepers to the music industry, in South Korea or the west. They didn't play the industry's game. Their success infuriates the power players in the industry. It's a counter narrative to the industry's formula for success. Further, BTS leapfrogged over all the acts who were label rich and industry supported. As a group from a broke, unprivileged company this upsets S Korea's hierarchical system. They are upstarts who didn't "know their place." They instead adopted the Baepsae, the crow tit, a tiny bird from a Korean idiom about knowing your place and staying in your lane, as a sort of mascot that represents the underdogs like themselves. They have a song called Baepsae, and mention it in other songs as well. Additionally, BTS is unflinchingly fearless about speaking truth to power in their music and addressing socio-political and socio-economic issues and societal ills, generational conflicts and other taboo topics, which further angers powerful people in society. They were criticized from the start for their counter-culture narrative which was seen as subversive and corrupting. Much of the organized hate and attacks against them are bot farm fueled and orchestrated by money from powerful people and companies. Eight of the biggest fandoms from the three largest labels were guided and influenced through such back door tactics to see BTS as their enemy and band together, which never usually happens, to attack them. Most of those attacking them are well aware their attacks are lies. Additionally, S Korea is a collectivist society and tends to have a perverse desire to pull down anyone who rises too high or is too exceptional. The "crabs in a bucket" phenomenon. Bringing idols down for tiny, insignificant things seems to be a pastime in which they take great glee. Further, the international industry suppression and abuse was also fueled by racism and xenophobia. It's more "how dare they?" outrage at non-white, non-English speaking artists daring to rise over the industry supported darlings in the west. One reason ARMY doesn't like calling BTS KPop is that the whole industry was never friendly to them. They were seen as outsiders and misfits, mocked, mistreated, black-listed and suffered industry lockout. They were never aided by being a part of KPop, but were in fact harmed by the connection. They succeeded **despite** the industry, not because of it.
@NanciBK9 күн бұрын
In a sense you can say that the hate for BTS is corporate self-defense. BTS is an existential threat to the existing narrative for success and the existing corporate hegemony on the music industry globally. They also threaten the current cultural power structure of hierarchical culture in S Korea. In the west, they threaten the US dominance on the global music industry. In fact, HYBE, the company formed with the Big Hit (BTS) money a few years ago, is already buying up the US industry. HYBE is an umbrella corporation with many small labels under them in a grape cluster structure which maintain relative creative independence and encourage artistic vision, just like Big Hit does. Big Hit is one of the labels under HYBE (though Big Hit/BTS still provides the majority of HYBE's money.) Another label under HYBE is now HYBE America, formerly Ithica Holdings, which is the label of such western artists as Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. BTS members are major shareholders in HYBE. So now they are essentially JB and AG's bosses.

Thanks for addressing the misogynistic lyrics in a respectable way because a person's first reaction is to attack the people bringing this issue to light (honestly most reactors say 'wtf that's crap that's not true' when they could definitely be taken as misogynistic). As a disabled person, I get so much hate for bringing up ableism (both in and out of ARMY and other places) and the first reaction is to attack me, insult me or tell me my lived experience isn't relevant. It's exhausting. Instead, RM is a bigger person than ALL THESE PEOPLE and took the effort to listen to people and consult people in relevant fields to see what could be an issue or is and he grew as a result of this. But again, there's only one RM in this world and unfortunately, most people are going to lash out with anger and hate.

Hi fellow Canuck. I've been diving into the BTS rabbit hole for the past... year so it's great to see others who are new. The part where you explained about your hand movements as a release for your excitement was refreshing to hear, and not just your reactions but that it comes across as a genuine joy. I have found BTS's music healing - this is what they do. Of RM's solo songs I've only begun to listen, but really like Do You and Come Back To Me. The rap line also has an incredible song which I *think* is all in Korean called Ddaeng (prounced kind of like the ring of a school bell), but in order to really understand and appreciate this one, you need to also watch the DKDKTV Explained by a Korean version. I have seen it twice and still rewatch it so I can fully appreciate the wordplay which the song has in abundance.

It is my favorite documentary on BTS. It has 21 chapters and uses BTS own vlogs and videos to tell their story and also explains more about the K-pop industry as well. I highly recommend it. If you're not sure where to start, I always say the beginning is a good place.

Re: RM getting feedback on his lyrics. I don’t think his motivation was to mitigate being called misogynistic again. RM has always said one of his biggest motivations for going the idol route was to have his voice heard. If you have an important message to convey, and you’re told that people are getting something entirely different from it, broadening your social awareness so that you can communicate in a way that more people hear you is growth in communication skills, which is essentially what he did. It wasn’t about curbing his artistic voice. (Note - don’t @ me about if the accusations were warranted or not, that has nothing to do with the point I’m making!) Also, I think it’s clear Kim Namjoon doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to, aside from dancing to stay in BS. 🤣

I personally didn't find the original 'misogynistic' lyrics problematic but I grew up in the US where I have heard far, far worse against women on radio. The song in question was 'War of Hormone' and I always saw it as a spoof on how teen guys think with their 'hormones.' Very innocent but sassy. 🤷♀️ And I think that given how misogynistic Korean culture is right now, it's even more admirable that they deliberately try to be respectful to women. How far have they come since that issue? Just this week, RM was named to a list of 16 male role models who try to prevent violence against women by the Pixel Project. 💜

I think you missed the point between the radio announcers politically discussing why Korean media is ignoring BTS.. it’s the fact that they went big, succeeded and gone phenomenal without using big media or the usual way of being popular .. meaning audience and global popularity is due to hard work, talent and being an artist .

No they kept blocking BTS. SO BTS HAD TO MAKE NEW PATHS AROUND INDUSTRY BLOCKS. MAKING THEIR OWN PATH MEANS THE INDUSTRY DOES NOT PROFIT. BTS is known to get very little to no radio play because they do not pay payolla. The reason the industry hates them is they dont make money out of them, and BTS shows independents how to do it.
