After a serious car crash, novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who claims to be his biggest fan. Annie brings him to her remote cabin to recover, where her obsession takes a dark turn when she discovers Sheldon is killing off her favorite character from his novels. As Sheldon devises plans for escape, Annie grows increasingly controlling, even violent, as she forces the author to shape his writing to suit her twisted fantasies.

@@PopcornReactions He had another novel that was a reaction to fans, or at least one fan in particular. Early in his career, he was writing so much and so quickly that he actually produced more novels than his publisher would accept, because they didn't want to glut the market with his name. So to sell these books, and as sort of an experiment to see if lightning could strike twice, King created a pen name, "Richard Bachman," and began to publish novels under that name as well. He got five books published as Bachman before a bookstore clerk did some digging and found out that King's name was on publisher's records listing him as the author. In fact, he was working on MISERY when he was discovered and it was going to be the sixth Richard Bachman novel. A few years later, King wrote a novel called THE DARK HALF, about a writer who wrote crime novels under a pen name, who was discovered and had to "bury" his other identity. The other identity then comes to life and begins to murder everyone involved in revealing that he wasn't a real person...starting with a nosy bookstore clerk.

Actually no. He wrote it because after his real car accident he got addicted to pain meds for a while. Annie was his "demon" of addiction keeping him in bed.

The sheriff's death in this movie is honestly one of the saddest movie deaths to me. We followed him from the beginning, seeing his progress, getting to know him and his wife, come to care for him and how genuine and competent he is and then boom, dead. Just like that. It upset me greatly when I first watched it :(

He could've lived a lot longer if he'd stayed under the covers with his wife like she wanted, but a man's life was at stake. His arrival probably allowed Paul to come up with a stalling tactic to attack his captor and save himself.... So his death wasn't in vain?

Kind of silly not to have a second cop, and the gun ready, while walking into her house,snooping around. Knowing she acted odd in front of the stationary store almost getting in a car accident.

Maybe he thought she would become suspicious if he came with other officers, and refuse them entry into her home (without a warrant). Then, when they leave to get the warrant, she would have enough time to kill Paul (and possibly herself) before they returned.

We watched this movie for the first time about 10 years ago. My husband was on medical leave for 3 weeks after surgery and we had a big stack of DVDs from the library. What kind of surgery? ANKLE surgery 🤮😄 We had no idea that was coming. He still can’t watch that scene to this day

I think because Rob Reiner is this loveable schlub of a filmmaker, and not particularly distinctive in his 1980s run of films, there is some hesitation to rank Misery among the best horror movies of that era, but the truth is, he directed the shit out of that thing. Hitchcock would've been proud of it. By the way, regarding the hobbling scene: in the novel, Annie used an axe.

Early in the dialog, Annie stated that she has seen Paul for weeks at the lodge, I think being his "Number 1 Fan" she would've tried to visit him, as any fan would, but she also states she saw him leave in the blizzard. She's clearly been stalking him, given her many mental issues, but I think it was Annie he cut Paul's brakes, given the visual clue; where Paul tries to use the brakes multiple times, but nothing happens!

In the book, Paul is extremely addicted to the pain medication and she leaves him for days, as punishment. I saw another comment that said part of the movie is about King's own drug addiction.

Nothing can prepare you for the scene with the. Sledgehammer even when you know its coming. Here's another movie about a psychopath it's called. Behind the Mask the Rise of Leslie Vernon its tag line is. Freddy, Jason, Michael We all need someone to look up to . It's a horror movie that is part documentary part horror slasher movie. With some humor tossed in it also has some. People that you may recognize from other Horror movies. Like Poltergeist, A Nightmare on Elm Street an Friday the 13th. I won't say who no real spoilers here just a teaser of some of. The people in it this movie deserves more attention then it gets.

Lauren Bacall. Hubba hubba... wanna make a classic film? Stick one of the classic actresses of all time in it. Even when I saw it upon relesae, I thought it was odd casting - James Caan was an actor sort of past-his-peak - not his prime but his popularity peak, and he had been for quite a few years. (I think getting killed at a traffic tollbooth does that, apparently. I'm glad he got better, though.) And Kathy Bates would never EVER be Miss Sexy Poptart Leading Actress Material. But here she was... Leading Actress. And she'd made powerful performances before, and for years - decades later. "Age" was never a detriment to her looks, either. Even to this day, I can still see her being resurrected as the Evil Twin... the Number 2 Fan.

This is a great film. In my opinion, it’s the best of Stephen King’s movies that was based on one of his novels. The book is even scarier, of course, but this was a fine adaptation. The screenwriter, William Goldman, is also an author, so that might be why it’s so good.

This is one of the very few books were they did things different in the movie, then in the books, but I think it was an improvement. Very rarely when they change things for movies. Does it make it better but the hobbling scene is vastly different in the book, but much better in the movie and so is how the sheriff died.
