Great video, I haven't been up Pikes Peak since I was 11 or 12. I really want to go back. Just not sure about the drive past 11,000 or 12,000 ft where the trees and guard rails disappear!

You mentioned not being forced to use the shuttle. What's the rule about that? People who wants do drive up are not easily allowed to do it?
@Justahobbyoutdoors4 жыл бұрын
No not all can drive all the way up, we drove the whole way because we had an infant

I just did the climb two days after you did! I wish I could sayI found it as “easy” as you, but I was driving a 24 foot-long class B RV (a really big-ass camper van.) and that road is just not very forgiving to vehicles with an absurdly high center of gravity and wide turning ratio. I’m still not sure why they let me go all the way to the top, at the tollbooth they’d said that I’d have to park at checkpoint 16 and take a shuttle bus the rest of the way due to limited parking at the top due to construction, but at 16 they just waved me through to the top, wound up parking almost exactly where you did.

lol yeah I dont think I wouldve drove an RV to the top. I bet you could clearly see right over that edge lol.

Oh, I’m sure the view going up was spectacular, but I’ll never know; my eyes were GLUED to the road right in front of me!

lol i can only imagine trying to maneuver something like that up there. I think the next drive we do will be the shelf rd from rte 50 to cripple creek. you can see the previous video of the phantom canyon rd. that was a nice drive.

Beautiful drive. Gotta ask, what kind of rig were you in? From the hood I'm thinking Silverado? How was the power loss by the time you got to the top?
@Justahobbyoutdoors4 жыл бұрын
It is a 2014 f150, not bad on power but using low gears is a necessity coming down, once down from steep switchbacks, they stop you and check temp of brake rotors and people dont read signs and ride brakes the whole way down.

About to try out this drive in a week or so- any worries with your brakes on the way down?
@Justahobbyoutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Nope just use low gear in transmission of they let you drive to the top, they also will check brake temps when you come down. They let us drive to top since we had an infant.

Justahobbyoutdoors got it, thanks so much!

@@bb-vf1hb one more thing make sure you stop along the way to acclimatize especially near the top, we got such bad altitude sickness
@bb-vf1hb4 жыл бұрын
Justahobbyoutdoors thank you so much for this tip- I’m quite sensitive to altitude. I’m planning to drive all the way to Nebraska after driving this so I can’t get sick! haha

I am from Michigan and did it on the second day it was open to the summit on a Honda CR500, it was may 31. Street legal dirt bike. I have footage of it on my channel. Sorry if I pissed anyone off by passing a few people.
