In this video, I arrive in Santiago! I timed it so I only had 10K to hike that morning. I wanted to get to Santiago early to be able to enjoy the whole day. I planned on taking my time and savoring each last kilometer, but instead my legs couldn’t be slowed down and at times I jogged. It was surreal to walk under the arch and into the plaza and see the magnificent cathedral. I was in shock. It hit me when I got my Compostela at the pilgrims office. A tidal wave of emotion took over me and I couldn’t stop crying. What an amazing end to this journey. A friend and I splurged and split a room at the historic Parador hotel. Most epic. Found out it’s the oldest hotel in the world! Built in 1599. It was originally a hospital to care for pilgrims. My heart and thoughts were bursting. Through it all, I have grown and learned so much. I’m grateful for this amazing journey and hope that you will plan your own Camino someday. Ultreia! Thanks for the love throughout this journey. It carried me. Alaskan Pilgrim-Jeanee.

at minute 3:24 you are correct - the parador is right next to the cathedral. It is totally worth the spurge. Very large and elegant Was built by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1500 to house the sick and pilgrams.

Hello Jeanee, My wife and I just finished watching your wonderful accounts of your camino. What a joy! It turns out we were on our first camino at the same time that you were. We started from St. Jean a week before you, on Friday, Sept. 7 and we didn’t arrive in Santiago until Thursday, Oct. 25, so at some point you passed us. It took us 49 days to reach Santiago, but 7 of those days were rest days with no walking except for sightseeing. We were not nearly as dedicated as you in documenting the experience. I kept a written journal, my wife kept a blog and we took a lot of photos, but no videos. Thank you for doing that. Watching your videos brought back so many wonderful memories. As you said often, your heart felt swelled with emotion. I felt the same way. What a privilege! What a gift! Such joy! I felt such gratitude. All the way along, everything I saw, I kept reminding myself that I had never seen it before and probably would never see it again. The day before we started walking, while we were strolling around St. Jean, we got to talking with another American. He explained that he had started out hiking two days prior with his friend, and that on the first day, his friend had a heart attack and died. He explained that he was on his way to the authorities to see about having the body shipped home. This didn’t help my confidence. You described early on how you began to have doubts that you would be able to finish. The exact same thing happened to me. I started thinking “What have I done?!” With the simple life of the camino, small things mean a lot. One very hot day, we stopped, exhausted, at a small snack bar and bought some KAS Limon soda. Without being asked, the gentleman behind the counter gave us both a free slice of ice cold watermelon. It was just wonderful, and raised our spirits. What a blessing!! Did you have any difficulty in getting the attention of the staff in the bars to order food and pay for it? At the time, we wondered - Are they mad at us? Do they resent all these foreigners in their country? But I guess it’s not that. It’s just that things move slower there and transacting business is not that important. Also, did you find it frustrating at 5:30 pm, when you were starving, trying to find some dinner? One time, in Astorga, I walked into a restaurant, hoping for something to eat. “Señor, we are very hungry. Can we eat dinner?” His response: a shrug of the shoulders and the reply: “No, this is Spain. Come back at 8.” Thank God for the middle-eastern guys with the kebab restaurants. They saved us from starvation a few times. Also, I have to admit going to KFC and Burger King on occasion in order to survive. The Camino was really, really hard, but absolutely wonderful. I would rate it, after getting married and having a child, as the most satisfying thing I have ever done. Unfortunately, after coming home, it is difficult to get going again. Nothing else seems to measure up or be as satisfying. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about it. I wish I could go back and walk for a day or two. We are considering another walking trip in 2020, but it will be shorter (Hadrian’s Wall in England; 84 miles over 11 days). My wife had a lot of foot problems on this trip, and does not want to walk so far again. I have mixed feelings. It was a long trip, but it was so much fun. My only foot problem is a lost toenail on my big toe, which at the time required my walking several days in Teva sandals. Thank God I had them. I wish we could get together and tell Camino stories. I’ve warned people that once I start talking about it, I can’t stop talking. Thanks again for making the effort to record your trip. I'm sure I will watch it again often.

Hi Russ, thank you for writing such a beautiful entry. I too felt all of those things that you had mentioned. After a Pilgrim returns to their home, they’re never quite the same. It’s a new normal. You are filled with so many experiences and memories and it takes a while to acclimate. I read a book about an nomad Eskimo tribe, that when the tribe was ready to walk to the next long trek and hunting ground, they would take some of the burning embers and keep them going by putting them in seal stomachs. When they arrived at their new destination, they would take the burning embers out and start a fire. This is how they survived. I suppose that’s what we each have to do. To keep the Camino alive in us, we need to have those embers; memories/lessons/ experiences burning in us always. That is how we keep it alive, even in our daily life. I hope to return one day and do the Portuguese route. Thank you for reaching out. It’s always heartwarming to hear from fellow pilgrims who have the embers burning in them. Best of luck on your next adventure! Buen Camino, friend.

As you were nearing Santiago your attitudes, character and facial expressions changed dramatically. You even looked younger, happier, so energetic, radiant, and content with life and all that surrounded you. Was it a miracle or a Santiago-effect? Please, let me know. I am sure many people will agree with me. Are you religious? What transformed you 180 degrees? Congrats. You are a woman of character, determination teaching us a lesson and showing us great spiritual things! Can you believe Spain is the country you' ve walked most? Thanks. Take care. Keep preaching about the 'Camino d' Santiago'_ with your example. O.

Jeanee, What a beautiful journey! Your videos captured the spirit of the Camino with the breathtaking scenery. Thanks for sharing with us the rewards and challenges that you endured along the many paths that you crossed along "The Way". I followed along with joy and tears, knowing how amazing you are. Can't wait for your return back, so that you can further share your journey. Saint James, how true and love it! Buen Camino.

Yolanda, thank you so much! I don’t see what you see, but sure appreciate the sweet compliment. I didn’t have a routine, I showered after each day and put a thick cream on my face. Sunblock and mascara in the day. Washed my hair once a week. When I arrived into Santiago I felt the best I had from the whole trip. I hope you go one day!!

Can people live vicariously through someone else? For this journey, this time, that’s what I’ve done. And I am soo in tears as I see your face triumphantly doing what you set out to do! And so I have to ask myself ... why not me?

Loved your journey! I am going the end of August this year and am trying to figure out my flights and when to book my flight back home. I know you had a few rest/recovery days. How many days total were you gone - from leaving your home to leaving Spain? Well, not counting your time to Finestere I guess. And would you recommend that length of time? Thanks!

Oh so exciting Chrystal!! I was gone a total of 40 days. I allowed a few days in the beginning and end. I walked 33 days and had 3 rest days in between. It worked great for me. I never felt rushed. I hope that helps. Enjoy the journey and Buen Camino!!
