I was there on August 11th, 1968 when 70013 ‘Oliver Cromwell’ hauled the ‘15 Guinea Special’, the last steam hauled excursion by British Rail. Back then there were 4 tracks, one either side of the existing platform and 2 through roads for goods traffic. There was also an unusual signal box which straddled what is now the sole surviving track. Sad to compare the memory of the station in 1968 with the contemporary halt...

Oh my goodness, this is the most random stop ever. I'm so glad you covered it. I used to travel this route to my hospital placements when I was studying in Manchester. I was always fond of the entwisle stop because there was a beautiful lake you could see just peaking through the wooded hills as you're nearing it. I gasped when I saw the shot of the bridge, I've travelled this route countless times and never knew what it looked like. Thank you so much for showing this, it's brought some memories back.

I'd argue that the "continuity error" involving the timetable isn't an error... 0713 is in the "first trains" column - and as it's the first train, it does kinda belong there...
@JBLewis4 жыл бұрын
I was pondering that, too!

Indeed. And if the shot panned right a bit we'd see 0713 also under the "7 to 8am" column.

I’m guessing that the timetable is actually correct as it’s just helpfully highlighting which is the first train and then in the 7-8 section out of shot it will repeat that service in full. If that puts your mind at rest

0:46 It's nice to see an "Alight here for..." sign at a request stop. In order to read this, one needs to request a stop here, first, already knowing what this stop is to be alighted at for. :-D

I have no idea how I stumbled upon a channel with a guy who just visits rarely used train stations, but I really like this... it also reminded me of the local train I used to take here in Denmark when visiting my grandparents.... it went from Køge to Fakse Ladeplads, and it had a few of these request stops, one of which closed down a few years ago since it hadn't been used by anybody in years...

On the day they were filming at Entwistle station my wife was pushing our 18 month old daughter around the reservoir in her pram. She walked up to the station to get the next train home and ended up in the middle of filming. As she struggled to get the pram on the train , Peter Kay was good enough to give her a hand but she didn't recognise him at the time because he was "dressed so weirdly"!

If I didn't know better, Geoff, I'd say the railway companies and the various tourist organisations were paying you to do this! I know they are not, even though some of them do 'support your channel' in small ways - so they should. Real folding money couldn't buy what you just did for Entwistle - identify and highlight the charm, beauty and stunning views within a few miles of the station. Once whilst waiting for a train at Romford Station I was busy chatting to my friend. I was too busy putting the world to right looking at him whilst standing (not to near) the edge of the platform and not paying attention to the world around me. He suddenly exclaimed "Here is the train" as it slowly trundled into the station. Being awoken suddenly from my rant I noticed the train and in a slight moment of panic I stuck my arm out for it to stop. My friend, laughing said "What are you doing? You only do that for buses not trains!" Well Geoff has now filmed a wonderful series of request stop videos to prove that my friend was incorrect.....sometimes. Incidentally three weeks later I did the same thing at Romford Station.

Anyway, seeing it’s on the Rochdale to Clitheroe line reminds me of a weird phenomenon/scenario. From Rochdale you’re able to get a direct train to Blackburn in either direction - west via Manchester on this line or east via Todmorden/Yorkshire. Surely there can’t be many places in the UK where you can get a train to a certain destination without changing where you can set off in either direction
