Just a short update on the environmental testing of several tools that we've kept out in the elements for a while. It looks like the corrosion-resistant Torx L-Keys are holding up just fine so far.

Legend said he is still trying to get Wera Stainless to rust.

That nasty soot reminds me of Cleveland in 1968 - I lived there for a year and I'm probably still coughing up that black stuff that got all over everything. I agree with the other comments about using the non-rusting L-key so it gets 'normally beaten up' and see if the finish is durable in practice.

I've got the Knipex 86 03 125 Pliers wrench with a chrome finish, had it for half a year or so. Its still like new, even though it gets used every day and has fallen into puddles and basically everywhere thats hard to reach :D

I bet if you used that zinc L key it would totally corrode/ rust all it takes is a little chip

Yeah but it's stainless, not zinc. If it was truly stainless, I don't think it would make a good tool, so maybe it is zinx or Chrome's out? Idk

Not the best idea to mount the tools on a stainless steel support as it enforces bimetallic corrosion. Better use a plastic support. Being a professional in corrosion testing for more than 20 years, I can tell you, that bimetallic corrosion is a very common "no brainer" issues.

for the zinc finish torx. use it and mark up the finish and see if its still free of rust.

FishFind3000 I know what you are trying to say, but in this case, let’s say you buy a nice complete set of these, and you actually accidentally leave them in a shed or an old truck over the winter without using them.. this is what to expect.
@caseytbss5 жыл бұрын
Integra DIY odds are you are going to use them a couple times before that happens. Tools are meant to be used. Storing them brand new in a shed should not effect them at all.

Scratches shouldn't cause any rusting. The zinc is a sacrificial anode. As long as the zinc and steel are electrically connected the zinc will corrode instead of the steel. Eventually though the zinc will be used up and no longer prevent rusting.

With a chrome or nickel plating however, a scratch can cause rust
