Ireland really has given the world some astounding female vocalists in the modern era. Sinead O'Connor, Enya, Dolores O'Riordan. All quite different in their promotion of Irishness through popular music too.

Enya is one of a kind. Orinoco Flow was her first big hit. May it Be is another great one. Many of her songs are largely instrumental and very Celtic ! Her first album is filled with gems! Caribbean Blue is also extraordinary,!

A lot of cello work in her music along with strings and piano. And yes, she plays them all (at least in the studio recordings). As I said before in your previous Enya reaction, she is totally gifted in playing the piano/synths. "Portrait (Out of the Blue)" Absolutely mesmerizing piano piece. "No Holly for Miss Quinn" is another. Both instrumentals.

The rest of her family are the Irish group Clannad. They perform in both English and Irish Gaelic. They've got a few songs you might like: "I Will Find You" (theme song from Last of the Mohicans), their cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now", with Paul Young, or the song with Bono from U2, "In a Lifetime".

Number one selling Irish artist of all time, bigger than U2. Before going solo, she sang more traditional Irish/Celtic music with other members of her family in a band called Clannad - Gaelic for family. They did the music for several movies, including Harry's Game and Last of the Mohicans, and for a Robin Hood series from the BBC and Showtime in the 80s, where I first heard them.

Did they move on to become Clannad Banba? I never really dove into music of this type until i heard Orinoco Flow and started collecting any cd that had Enya on it. I had several of her cds before i stumbled across Clannad Banba and picked up one of their cds.

Enya was an original member of Clannad, along with her sister Moya Brennan, and 2 brothers and 2 uncles. She left the band subsequently to persue a solo career. If you like Enya, you definitely need to check out Clannad.

The "Voice of an Angel" drenched in reverb verging on echo. Still pleasant to listen to; unlike a certain other overused computerized vocal processing technique that shall remain nameless. I have heard her sing straight or at least with minimal processing and she is quite talented, so this is an artistic choice.

There is actually very little reverb. She and her producer Nicky Ryan developed a style of recording using multiple overdubs of her voice. But each overdub is a seperate recording. She will even vary the pitch ever so slightly to thicken the sound. She is also doing as many as seven harmony parts in those overdubs. They would then be merged onto a single track, with the rest erased to free up room for even more vocals. "It's still live voices," she insists. "With sampled voices, there isn't that emotional feeling. The dense guitar part at the beginning of Ommadawn (Pt. 2) by Mike Oldfield (1975) was created by recording 8 tracks onto a multi-track reel-to-reel tape, bouncing them down to 1 track, and repeating the process until he had 1984 (shades of George Orwell) of them overdubbed according to the liner notes. It is amazing what musicians could accomplish with talent and hard work back in the archaic, halcyon days of analog; I would say, but then I was there when this was new music; so, yeah! ;-) The still highly regarded RCA Living Stereo and Mercury Living Presence recordings were done with just 2 or 3 tracks. ProTools et al. is for the lazy.

Been a fan of Enya since the early '90s. She's also one of those women who, the more you look at her the more you realize how classically beautiful she is. Another "voice of an angel" for you is Jackie Evancho. One of the best performances I've seen as far as arrangement, presentation and her voice is from her first PBS performance in 2011 called "Lovers". She was 11 years old. You may not believe what I say, but watch it and you'll see. Also, since it almost Memorial Day check out her rendition of "My Heart Will Go On" dedicated to the families of the fallen from the 2014 Memorial Day concert in DC. Very emotional.
