Could not agree more. Punched out after a few minutes. Guys, you aren't in the podcast business. You got a click because I was interested in an answer to the question, which I am sure I can google, and maybe some "level deeper" content about those rounds that might be interesting. That would be something I would use next time I'm shopping to make an informed decision- not between CDef and CDut but between your ammo and someone else's. If I knew exactly which box I should put your 2 products in I would choose it because I'd know exactly what it's for at a level that exceeds what I know about everything else on the shelf.

I have used Hornady Critical Defense ever sense I watched some testing Paul Harrell did a few years ago. He tested several different then current HP rounds in calibers from .380 up and in barrel lengths from 2 inches and longer. Hornady Critical Defense was the only round to open up like it should and NOT over penetrate in every caliber and barrel length tested. So I have it in .38 spl., .357 magnum, 9mm, 45 APC and will get it in .380 APC.

Any proven defensive round uses low flash powder. Hornady rounds are extremely overrated and overpriced when compared to the proven gold dot & HST. Both HST & GD have measurable lower flash, more reliable feeding and accuracy as well as better overall terminal ballistics. Both HST & GD in whatever grain weight can be found in boxes of 50 for 36-46 bucks a box while Hornady duty & defense forces you to purchase 20rd boxes while charging WELL over 1 dollar a round.....

@@TerminalM193With respect your not making a good case here dude! Your 100% correct on one point! All modern defensive loads have flash suppressed powders(some more than others ime). The only pistol defense ammo that I’ve seen that’s more expensive than Federal HST is the Winchester PDX1. Federal HST is a TOTL offering…$38-$50+ per 20 depending on source and caliber. Federal makes the more reasonably priced “Punch” ammo but still $20 per 20 vs $40 per 20 for Federal HST and the obscenely expensive HST is much better ammo. One would be MUCH better off buying Fiocchi’s Defense dynamics ammo that uses a Hornady XTP hollow point and goes for around $29 per 50 for .40S&W. That will give you the same performance as the Federal punch for less than half the price. I’ve shot $100 and $100’s worth of Speer Gold dots. It’s good stuff all around and well proven but Gold dots don’t penetrate deep! They expand consistently & evenly but the cheaper Hornady XTP hollow point will penetrate better and still guve good hollow point expansion and energy dump! Most gold dots nowadays are sold in boxes of 20 and even on sale are $28 per 20 for 9mm😱. The Fiocchi defense dynamics in a box of 50 for allot less money kick the Gold Dots ass overall ime. The Sig Sauer Elite V crown HP ammo costs around $4 per 20 less than Gold Dots and in my tests it absolutely outperforms Gold Dots for penetration and overall ballistic performance. The only 50 round Boxes I’ve seen of Gold Fits nowadays are always 9mm and around $7 Bucks a box more than Fiocchi defense dynamics. Hornady critical defense is around $25 per 20 .40s&w and Critical duty is $28 per 20 .40s&w. The FTX hollow point in critical defense is the suceeor to the outstanding XTP bullet I’ve mentioned. In my tests the FTX bullets perform outstanding. I would personally rafter have the Fiocchi ammo I’ve mentioned with the XTP bullet for the price. The Hornady Criical duty is one of my all time favorite for .357 Sig with its outstanding deep controlled expansion properties. The ammo is Top shelf and even on sale it’s obscenely expensive @ $35 per 20😱😱

@deucedeuce1572

@@mikedupree832 Match ammo is just more reliable and consistent. They take more time and attention to detail with each round and the quality control is increased. I've fired match ammo and never noticed a difference... but that's probably because I'm not such a great shot that it makes a difference. With modern manufacturing, most ammo is very reliable and very consistent. There was one time though I weighed many FTX rounds only to find out that 2 of them had defects in the HP where a small amount of lead could be seen missing and each of those 2 bullets were exactly 4 grains in weight lighter than the rest of the rounds. With match grade ammo, these kinds of differences should not be present. Every round should be identical.

I'm a first time owner at the age of 65. I've always been around them, so I never felt the need to have a personal ownership. Now I'm on my own and I missed knowing I was able to protect myself. I've not yet been to the range, but I use my I-target just about every day. It's addictive so I have to be careful, I woke up hurting the day after I got it. lol So I've been studying because I've learned there's a lot to being a gun owner today. I started with safety and understanding what needs to happen for me to get a carry license. (After 20 years I just renewed my drivers license too.) I want to do a little camping and traveling, but I'll be on my own. Being an older woman I think it's imperative that I possess an equalizer. So now that I have a good starting base of info on being responsible, I turned my attention to ammo. Yet another topic I've been far too ignorant about. I bought some after a little research, not sure my decisions were sound ones at this point. I've seen some bad things about IMI ammo. I know nothing about another brand I have. Thank you for my first lesson in ammo. I see some thought you talked too long, well I guess that's why you can listen at a much faster speed should you want. I know I do when its a topic I know well enough to just be looking for specific info. I learned something in every minute you spent talking just about, so thanks.

Hey, welcome to firearms ownership🔫. I've been into firearms since I could own them. I would like to give you my 2cents suggestions. As for brands, this is what I recommend 1st Federal HTS, 2nd Speer Gold Dot, 3rd Winchester PDX1, 4th Hornaday Critical Defense, and last but definitely not least are Liberty Civil Defense. I recommend ONLY using these Liberty as your first mag with your carry pistol (for less weight purposes) and the first 5 rounds of your home defense pistol (for over penetration purposes). As for bullet weight (grain), 3.5in or less barrel (most carry pistol) go with 115g or lower, 3.6in - 4.4in barrel 124g, 4.5" - 5.5" barrel 147g Hope this helps a little. Good luck with your adventures 💯🙏

This is information that should be disseminated every few years. I had to pick through various articles before this but the first article I saw that had the accumulated facts was an American Rifleman Story in 2016, which validated the choice my research showed was THE ammo to use in my carry guns. Starting with a CW9, then PPS M2, on to my P365XL. Also, my “hot weather” guns, CW380 and now P365 380. The one thing a story can’t show you is how little recoil is felt with these rounds. It’s startling and must be felt to appreciate. Great job, guys and these points must be brought out every few years. Don’t wait 7 years again!

Great discussion on the differences between the two, I had actually heard the Critical Defense was also “barrier blind” from a retailer once before so wondered what the real difference was. Knowing now the difference it would almost be worth having a spare magazine of Critical Duty just incase you got into that “barricaded” shootout, say in a “active shooter” scenario so you had a little more penetration if needed. But for us “civilians” it makes sense that Critical Defense would be better from a legal and liability standpoint since it is designed to keep over penetration to a minimum, which honestly sounds counter to what many “defense lawyers” have said over the years. Typically you hear them say to find out what your local, county, state/federal LEO’s carry and then carry the same as that shows you are looking to at least duplicate their performance and not over perform. (Ie be aggressive in choice) But the barrier issues bring up a good concern since it could be used against you by an activist prosecutor looking to make your ammo choice sound more aggressive than needed for a “civilian” self defense scenario. Finally seems like ages since I’ve seen Dave Emery, used to see him every year at the Western CMP Games and Creedmore Cup matches in the late 2000’s before I moved away from Phoenix to the mountains of Eastern AZ and stopped competing every year there. Would be great to see him on here and to have him share some of his knowledge with everyone, I know I always enjoyed his wisdom back then.

Does Hornady offer any machined bullets in any of your handgun product line? RE: Underwood Extreme Defender / Penetrator which is a machined solid copper bullet. I've used Critical defense in the past, but the aspect of barrier blindness, or the lack thereof, motivated a switch to the solid copper machined bullet because it is barrier blind yet is able to satisfy the FBI protocols for ballistic gel penetration with minimal risk of over penetration. Also, the machined bullet seems to minimize or reduce manufacturing anomalies such as imbalance and center of gravity. Would like to see a discussion on cast versus machined bullets.

Yeah, it's not even remotely like the human body. It's just a medium that is very reliable and repeatable, so each bullet can get a fair and equal test to every other bullet tested. It's also a clean solid that acts like a liquid when shot, which is kinda how the human body is, but without the mess.

It would depend on the gel. Also who made and did they go by the same protocol? I am in the pharmaceutical industry and we make agar plates for bacterial growth and purchase agar plates as well. When you make the plates they must have an agreed upon recipe, how much water and how much agar. Agar is just made from kelp, a seaweed found in the ocean. It gets harvested and cut and dried and powdered. I’m sure that is from the same material. Thanks for the video.

They can't because it's FAR less of an issue than peoppe make it out to be. Bystanders are injured by misses, not by hits. I still carry rounds intended to not over penetrate, but it's because I want energy transfer. To be fair, it's definitely something that should be considered but it's tiring watching people make a HUGE deal out of it.

Reduced penetration or "specific penetration" is the selling point of CD. Good info to have. I've been rethinking my ammo, replacing the cheap ammo w/o hollow point, and replacing the cheap grey lead hollow points with CD ammo. This still does not replace being on target with every shot, but does reduce the potential harm to others in a self-defense scenario.

I think we should see the product in action with the gels and variables they had mentioned. Possibly with the competition. Some of the competitors’ products do come in 50 rd. boxes. So should Hornady’s. I’m sure they also come at a competitive price. Update: Some Critical Duty and Critical Defense do come in boxes of 50. Shop around. They had a few boxes laying there on the table. Break them out and let’s see the differences. Would have been nice.

I carried an original new Colt Mk IV Mustang .380 in 1986 to 2014- 28 yrs-as my back up on the state/county police depts I was on with Critical Duty ammo. when it was developed I still carry it as a part of .my edc/ccw package regularly as a civilian. Though I have been in shootings with my duty weapon, I never had to resort to my back up BUT would be very comfortable doing so at close quarters and once I fired the Critical Duty I was hooked from that moment on. I like the punch it has and practice with it regularly in disadvantaged H2H positions close quarter scenarios to hit the head, under arms and pelvic girdle as many encounters have the assailant in body armor. So with those target areas I want good penetration. Again, practice is a must.

My brother almost didn’t come home due to the failure of your critical duty ammunition in the early 2010’s. He fired several rounds into a windshield and the round was defeated and fragmented every single time with no solid strikes. There were many fragmentation wounds but the core of the bullet failed to penetrate and remain intact. It’s funny some little hick town in Kentucky could enact such a change in the world of ballistics and ammunition but it sure did.

But I'd like to hear it from you Pros as to it's real-life pocket-pistol dependability. Not compared to 9mm, but standing on its own...can I trust your 380 Critical Duty to go thru windows n doors ? I saw some gel tests using the Underwood Extreme Penitrator +P+. The bullet is the Leigh Extreme Penitrator bullet, which in 9mm and larger calibers can dangerously over penitrate, but in 380, it's perfect. The +P+ load penetrates 12-14 inches. The resulting permanent wound channel close to a 9mm Extreme Defender, around 2" diameter, 12- 14" deep through denim. Military Arms Channel (MAC) did the test. Check it out... I don't have a 380, but I run the Underwood Extreme Defender +P+ in my G19 and love it. MAC did two great videos comparing the 9mm Underwood XD against HST, Gold Dot and Hornady, one through gell/denim, and the and the second through various barriers. Great videos...

For me it is. I train to hit what surgeons call “the tiger cage”. That’s the sternum area. Heart, upper lungs, several important veins and arteries are here. You’d have to be really fat for those rounds to not count. At the same time, opponents are moving. Hitting anywhere is difficult. Hitting an opponent anywhere inflicts significant pain usually. That pain and the fact that they’re taking rounds stops them unless they are very well trained or really wasted. All that being said, I absolutely think you have a very valid point. Some folks will say “That’s why I only use my AR…”

My question is if it’s a 4 inch barrel would I still use critical defense over critical duty. I’m just confused because I always thought the 4 inch barrels were hitting more towards a compact barrel size of a gun and not considered semi compact .
