As a 30 year gout sufferer (71 YO), I found the following: Gout can be in any joint of the body - however most prevalent in the big toe. I had one attack in neck, many others in various joints. MD treatment and pharma meds on a daily basis did not stop my gout attacks. Gave up this strategy after about 3 years. Avoiding high purine foods and alcohol did not stop my attacks. Exercise and natural remedies helped more than any of the above. My daily cocktail was and still is: Dark cherry juice, turmeric, ACV, celery seed, fresh lemon juice w/pulp, cinnamon, black pepper. Even with the above cocktail the attacks become more frequent with age. Keto diet stopped all pain and swelling in 10 days. After that I switched from Keto to High Fat/Low Carb diet. Now, after 4 months, gout and related symptoms are still gone. I eat many foods that are on the DO NOT EAT if you have gout lists. Asparagus, mushrooms, pork, bacon, red meats, etc. Still drink some beer but in lesser amounts and it's low carb. Weight has decreased by 13 lbs. (now at ideal weight for my height) Blood pressure has decreased from ~150/78 to 120/71. Sleep is much better..... SUGAR is the ENEMY.

Initially it is good and once you've determined the count of the meals you normally eat, you can eat with peace of mind. I found that counting my macros and calories the first time I did keto (Which I did for about 1-2 months until I got a lot of meals under my belt), it really helped me and then I quit counting once I had a 'general' idea.

I had a mild heart attack 3 years ago with high carb intake. I hope keto will keep me well in the last years of my life. Good luck to all you folks. I must say I like this guy but some principles of keto limit all carb grams to 20 / day. Why I heard was unlimited intake of some vegetables. How does that sync with Dr. Westman or the Atkins plan ?

I'm on vegetarian keto. I'm 40 pounds down and feel great. I rely largely on good fats: avocado oil extra virgin oil etc. And raw veg such as spinach, young green salad leaves, broccoli and so forth. Occasionally, if I'm out and there's not ideal food on offer, I'll eat a vegan bean chilli or similar. Despite being vegan, I still find so much of this doc's advice very helpful.

I had dietitians discourage me from skipping carbs because "eliminating food groups is unhealthy." Then they hit me with the "everything in moderation, balance is key" cliche. At that point they're willfully omitting the fact that carbs have addictive properties. Nobody would tell an addict "everything in moderation". Same applies with food. Needless to say, its obvious these "professionals" were pushing an agenda.

Sadly, this is what they're taught. They have to search for the information the same way we have, and change huge paradigms in the process to switch over ... paddling upstream against "the establishment" the whole way. It takes 2-3 generations for new bodies of evidence and studies to be implemented in healthcare. Let's be the ones who teach with love and patience! Check the nutrition label closely and measure at first to get an idea of amount. For best results do not go over 20gms. Eat fat and protein till you are full then quit. I use cruciferous leafy greens as a vehicle for getting lard and tallow into the system. Works well. I occasionally eat sweet potatoes baked in a microwave. I've measured my blood glucose 30 minutes and 1 hour after eating a meal with sweet potato and it was 103, or something. Did the same thing with a piece of toast and it was 150, or something. I’ve been such an advocate for the healthy fibres, all the whole grains. I make baked beans and add lentils to many meat casseroles. I’ve been grinding my own flour and making rye bread for years tried the sour doughs etc tried to stay away from processed foods and oils other than olive or avocado etc etc all the things. I didn’t binge on foods. I was fat but healthy on the inside or so I told myself . I did the SAD version of Keto and lost weight. But I never changed my eating attitude, my “habits” so it all came back. Recently I found Dr Cywes and binged on his episodes! I’ve now been carnivore for 5-6 weeks and everything is different from the inside out. Thank you Dr. Cywes for you very informative videos addressing the addictive nature of carbs. Thank you Dr. Cywes for clearing up this pervasive misconception in the keto community. So many keto practitioners are so vegetable phobic, due to the carb content of the vegetables. Anyone who has ever done any glucose measurements after the consumption of vegetables will find that the glucose rises are minimal to non-existent. Furthermore, the engineer Marty Kendall has done a thorough analysis of the insulingenic effect of vegetables and found them to be negligible as well. Though a high vegetable content is not necessary to maintain good health, since we are better suited to live mostly or entirely on meat, the addition of vegetables allows people to have enough variety so as to make the keto diet more sustainable. The keto zealots that make newcomers to keto fearful of the minuscule and mostly indigestible carbs in vegetables are doing these people a disservice. They are just dissuading them from making this a permanent lifestyle choice.

This is exactly what I’ve been doing since jan ‘18. Just cut back as much of the high carb crap as possible, no sugar or grain. No potatoes for a long while, but now occasionally have some, preferably baked, or even a very small portion of rice once in awhile, like with Chinese food. I like the main course better than the rice anyhow. I love this way if eating and will NEVER go back to SAD diet! You lose hunger almost completely, when you cut out carbs, and veggies taste AMAZING, everything does after about 2-3 weeks when your body becomes “fat adapted”. If I have a piece of cake or something (socially, maybe) I swear I’m buzzing off it. I guess that’s insulin sensitivity. I used to be able to pig out on carbs, didn’t effect me. Now, 50 lbs lighter, no aches, and I can literally feel the sugar on occasions (rarely) when I allow some of it. Restaurants invariably GIVE OUT carbs (breadsticks, chips, biscuits they always include them BC they make you able to eat more).

This is really good advice. I still eat baked potatoes once or twice a month because they’re packed with micronutrients in a way that helps with my intermittent fasting protocol, and because they’re delicious, but I stayed away from them for over two months while my body became keto adapted and fat adapted, so my body deals with it really efficiently now, and it’s usually preceded by a week of light OMAD and followed by a 24 hour fast. But I’ve eliminated added sugar and grains from my regular diet, and I’ve never felt better physically and mentally.

As a reitred Ortho- Molecular Biochemist this guy is totally on the money with this. The 'pathways' of the system cope adequately with raw foods or heated slightly as he states. When I watch all these cooking shows on the BBC all I can think of is diseased bodies after consuming nutritionally dead foods. It's a little like walking into a supermarket here in the UK, and seeing aisle upon aisle of nutritionally dead crap loitering around waiting for the local diseased carcass on legs to place that 'expired' food group in their trolley. Nothing good ever came off a self in the supermarket! One meal a day should be enough for most adults. Even when I hike over 25 miles in a day I still only eat one meal, however, electrolytes and supplements with food are best and necessary.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, a million times THANK YOU! I've been utilizing the keto plan for nine weeks, but in the last two or three days, have come to realize it's not sustainable for me. I "happened" to come across your videos this afternoon, searching for ??? something I didn't know I needed, but knew I had to change or modify keto for myself. I say THANK YOU so many times because one of my most favorite things ever to eat is lima beans---LOVE hot lima beans with butter on them! On the keto plan, they're "too starchy," and shouldn't be eaten, though I've continued to eat them about once a week. I don't overeat them, knowing precisely how much is enough, and that more would just make them unpalatable to me. I've also watched your video on eating carnivorously, which I'm also going to implement starting with tomorrow's OMAD. Thank you yet again, Dr. Cywes, for just getting the information out there that is so desperately needed for us carbohydrate addicts who really do want to eat in a good, healthy, sustainable manner, and doing so in an easy-to-understand fashion that doesn't require a degree in nutrition and/or rocket science to follow.

I have to disagree with Dr Cywes: I do notice higher blood sugar when I eat vegetables vs. when I don’t. It’s not “fine” for me. I would suggest anyone keep an eye on their numbers and judge when and whether they want to eat vegetables, and also how much. Sure, it’s not a problem for me from an addiction point of view, but it is from a metabolic point of view.

Hi Dr, thanks for a new, refreshing outlook on the keto eating plan. I went to a keto-like eating plan in May 2019, and by end Jan 2020 had reached my target weight and lost 13 kg in the process. Since then, I have maintained my weight, but have modified my diet slightly. I sorely missed my toast, and have opted for sourdough bread, and limit myself to two slices per week. The same with potatoes. Who doesn't like French fries?? So once a week I oven bake or air fry some frozen chips, drizzled with a little olive oil and salt. For the rest, it's heavy on especially fatty fish, avocado's eggs, chicken, and red meat once or twice a week. Low on fruit. but I do have about 2 apples or equivalent per day. I don't weigh or calculate anything. I exercise moderately every day.

As a diabetic I would agree with much of this. If you are carb addicted and metabolically challenged should you eat corn or beetroot? For me no. And as far as beans go they raise blood sugar far too much. I'm off my 400units of insulin a day but if I ate a cup or so of beans I dare say I would need some. Leafy greens yes. Cherry tomatoes well I feel you'd probably want to count that. People can eat large quantities of vegetables if they are a)hungry b)food addicts and c) put dressings etc on them.

I've been low carb since 2017. I have never counted macros or calories. I read labels. If it contains bad ingredients, back on the shelf it goes. If it passes my ingredient test, I look at the carb count and serving size. Many "keto friendly" foods are not, often because the serving size is tiny. I am still tempted by carbs, so I never let them through my door, ever. My cookie jar is empty.
