The Nygard thing reminds of how they went after Trump's lawyers with charges, disbarment and general "you'll never work again in this town" threats. Access to legal counsel is an important foundation of our legal system. The idea that you can even _try_ to deny that from your political opponents is very scary indeed. P.S. Nygard is originally from Finland so the case made quite a splash here too...

Ghomeshi was tried by the media. No matter the outcome of his trial, his lofe was ruined. And his innocence really doesn't matter to those who have a certain agenda. 😡

Nygard deserves a fair trial and a defence attorney, elected by the constituents, should be allowed to keep his connection to the firm.

Canada may be different. But, in the USA and in countries with similar values, such as Saudi Arabia and Israel, there is a real and ongoing problem that vague allegations of serious crimes are used to hold people indefinitely without access to a fair trial and even to torture people - in some cases even torturing people who were clearly innocent to death. I'm not opposed to mechanisms that preserve some privacy when a random nobody from the back woods of Canada gets mixed up with someone who is clearly mentally ill making lurid false allegations. But, at least in the USA and like-minded countries, there is a serious problem where government secrecy, and suppression of free speech, generally, is being used to deny people their basic rights to fair trials - even including serious violations of human rights such as torture.

hate to say it, but if youre an acting member of a political party, any action or affilliation of yours that can affect the image/values of the party and its eligibility is something the party has a right to address within reasonable discretion. the world isnt a court room and shouldnt be navigated like one! why be part of an electoral board if your proffession obligates you to nonpolitical duty of representation that explicitly compromises the messaging of the party? its impractical.

I gotta say, I don't think voting for lil pp is the right move, despite Justin Beiber being a shit PM. I agree that we can't do another term with him, but at the same time lil pp is also a nightmare.

All the world is a stage and all the world is a trial. When I am accused I want my case tried everywhere, not just in the courtroom! Therefore I find publication bans on any aspect of the trial abhorrent. Both sides obviously fight the case in the media as much as in the courtroom and all this should be unrestrained. Politically there is a chance that unfair laws can ultimately be changed as a result of openness. Therefore it is abhorrently short-sighted for a defence lawyer to seek secrecy, and utterly execrable for courts to grant it to either side.

I really would rethink that. The public (particularly the social media addicts) are too easily swayed by misinformation, and will never see all the evidence. And at the end of the day, it is only the opinion of the 12 jury members that determines if you keep your freedom, so their opinion needs to be as unbiased as possible.
