On this episode, Seth is joined by Assistant Director of Engineering, Joe Thielen, Senior Ballistician and Founder of Quinlan's Corner, Jayden Quinlan, and Project Engineer, Ryan Damman. The guys sit down to discuss the science and the design of the best match bullet on the market - the A-Tip® Match bullet. Topics include initial design iterations, the discovery of what came to be Drag Variability Reduction Technology, and how the finished product has dominated the match scene since their release. We hope you enjoy this technical episode. If you want to be a better competitor - here’s “A-Tip”!

This has to do wonders for your recruiting. Seeing a senior guys praise a younger guy for doing "the heavy lifting" during a development process... Most of us only dream of working with a team like that.

135 Atips are easily the most consistently accurate bullet ive ran in 6.5saum and 6.5 creed. Filled the freezer with a couple as well. 90g Atip is wizardry in a 22 creed more. Joe explained it all very well. Thanks for another great podcast with a full table of stellar knowledge and information.

Well done folks. It's good to hear the history behind this bullet. When I put my .300 PRC together, I could not find 230's in stock from my normal bullet manufacture I have been using for years. the 230 A-Tip was in stock and I bought 300. My ladder test with N570 was just a solid flat line. I settled on 79 grains and from the 26" Bergara barrel, it's pumping them out average of 2840. It's held 1/2 MOA out to 1000 so far. You can't convince me move off this bullet and powder combo. It just flat out shoots!

I use RL26 and get 2950fps from a 26" bergara and 230atip. Good to know that N570 will push them well with RL26 being on the endangered species list.

We need a 257cal A-TIP!!!!!!! something about 125-130gr!! Take the 134gr eldm and whittle it down for an A-TIP as a reference.

Bronze tip/point are way older than that! I have 2 boxes of 280's in a blue Peters and a green Remington box. Jack O'Connor commented on using them in his book, The Big-Game Rifle, 1952.

0.40 for the powder, 0.12 for the primer, minimum 0.40 for the bullet, typically 0.20 for the brass (assuming 5-10 reloads) - lowest price is over $1 per round. Adding 0.45 to the total is not a lot to pay for performance. If the A-Tip works for you, it’s worth it.

Potential may be there but unless you are shooting competitions its going to be awful painful to do load development at that price. Next comes the cost of working up a second hunting load with a different bullet. Compared to the price of the ELD-X that i can actually hunt with that I can still hit one inch gongs at 500, I just can't justify the cost of both. (Note to Hornady - This does not mean raise the cost of the ELD-X!)

I've been shooting 80gr ELDm bullets for 600 yard stages in CMP/NRA Service RIfle for the last three years. They shoot incredibly well, with fantastic vertical. Shot the 88s as well, and I think it's a wash in terms of wind drift with the 80s because you typically get about 100 fps slower out of the heavier 88s. That being said, I have a fair number of A-Tip 90s and so far they are pretty impressive in terms of wind drift. Going to shoot them this weekend in a match and make a determination if I'm taking them to Camp Perry. I'd hope that at some point you will offer the 80 ELDm in 3500 count cases.

Old school remember the Winchester selling point with silver tips and Remington bronze tips was: Bullet tip destruction at Loading.. a win94 has a lot of leverage, some semis were bad to tear bullet tips too. Thanks for advancing target performance..❤

I noticed in the 11th edition, the only 230 or 250 A tip reloading information is under 300 PRC and 300 Norma. Any plans on releasing data for those bullets in other cartridges? Since the 250 A tip is the bees knees, what did you have in mind when you created the 230? What cartridge was meant to attach to that bullet?

I'm shooting the 140 gr eld match in my 6.5, I'd like to try the A-tip 153 gr but cost prohibitive for the volume I shoot. I'll have to live with my sub .5 5 shot groups (on my good days)

I’d be very interested in seeing actual variations in the bc’s or drag variability from one bullet to the next bullet at nearing the end of the transonic region and possibly further. I know from experience that there’s variation from one bullet to the next even with the same lot number and bullet bc variation is huge when shooting in the trans and subsonic regions. Thanks!!
