Not only that. Also check undersides of drawers, and even inside books. Just look for places where you might hide money and valuables. Close at hand, but not easy to find if you don't know where to look. Sugar jar is too easy.

I'm sensing your melancholy as you sort through the remnants of someone else's life. I lost my breath a little bit at the matchbook drawer, memorabilia from places she had visited that she wanted to remember. .You are doing it with great respect and reverence, and that is to be commended. I believe you said the previous owner is still alive. It still might be worth doing to talk to her once in a while and let her know your intentions. Gratitude might be a little hard to muster as you are sweeping up rat poop LOL, but it's not a bad idea to put some positive energy into the atmosphere. You guys are going to do great and have a beautiful home when all the work is done.

It makes me sad. Someone really took pride in that home. You too will do that eventually. I live in independent living. And am 80 years old.10 years ago I has to empty our home and send things to auction and donate to others. There is hardly a day goer by that I don’t wonder what happened to my. “Treasures” I think you are ding a good job of going through and trying to respect someone’s memories. 😊

Very nice walk through, nice layout of the rooms. Score on some of the treasures you're finding. I have a match collection, so that was exciting to see those, especially the little enamel tin one, too cute! Some of the furniture is pretty nice, some looks in really good condition. I'm glad you're being very respectful of the previous owners belongings and going through everything and not just throwing things away. OMGosh, I wish I was walking around with you! that is such a cool place. I think the metal bottle is an eyeliner holder (Kohl). And the wood piece is a Mosaic work, the little sword looks like a miniature syrian sward, could be a letter opener. These 3 items are from the middle east most likely. I think the owner traveled a lot in her life and collected so many cool items. The matchboxes are a great collection and can sell it at once online! I can't wait to see what's in the cabinets and on the walls. I can see so many amazing antique frames and antique pictures of women. Check the copyrights on them, if it is passed, they are worth a lot, because people will be able to copy them and make digitals out of them that they can sell online.

Realizing you posted this quite a while ago... if no one has told about Oxi Powder washing additive, it is wonderful to use on old linens. It is mild enough not to destroy the item, but it is a powerful stain remover. I have used it on everything from table linens to antique quilts. My recommendation is that you put the Oxi in a large tub or bucket, add water, add linens, let everything soak, rinse with water, and hand wring. I do check items periodically, but I usually soak over night. One of the tips for super soiled items is to soak, pour off dirty water, gently rinse out dirty water until water is clean again, & restart the soaking process again. You will amazed at what can save. I usually put the tub or bucket in the bathtub...much easier to fill & dump the water. One caution, some very old embroidery threads & fabrics do not have the color set.

The Volvo, new battery, check all the wires, hoses, and belts to make sure they haven't been chewed up by rodents. Check engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant. A new battery will probably start everything right up. And as long as the fluids, belts, hoses, tires, and wires are all intact, it should be good to go.

Be safe until you finish the massive clean up, alot of sickness there. Let me know where to find the items you decide to sell. I collect wind-up alarm clocks and I seen one on the table in the sitting room. You need to box up any personal papers of hers and return them to her. It would be neat to have a visit with her on one or more of your videos giving her some of her personal belongings. Just found your channel and have started watching from the beginning. Over 10 years ago, I purchased a vintage home (1960's era) with contents, from the original owner and it took a very long time as well, due to the homeowner having a court appointed guardian. It felt like it took forever, but well worth the wait. The place was an absolute time capsule. It is bittersweet watching your videos and I was initially apprehensive that the property would simply be stripped and the entire character of the place would be wiped out. However, I was reassured when you mentioned your careers and love and respect of vintage. I have a part-time job working for an Estate Sale business. Often times, I am the one to open the property on the day of the sale and I always take time to do a quiet walk-through to honor the people who are no longer living there (or are already deceased). I value past era's and have kept my home as true to the time period as possible and sincerely hope that is your goal as well, understanding that some things are beyond hope and need to be updated to code. One bit of advice - even though you may feel some things do not have value for your project, it might be someone else's treasure. Best of luck, restoration (not renovation) can be a process. Watching from Michigan

We agree with you. We've given our best efforts to save the house and as much of the contents as possible. Unfortunately, with leaking ceilings and no a/c, several items were beyond our efforts to save. Some things we managed to clean and sell. a year later and we have stuff we are still researching.

The crochet lace tablecloths, like the one on that table with the drawer of matchbooks, would have all been handmade. I also saw a crochet blanket and a seat pad. Perhaps the homeowner made the lace tablecloths herself. They're probably not worth much, but it's still a cool thought.
