Hey you know what, if that building is "dual zone", since your husband is a doctor, if he ever wants to go into "private practice, you can section off a certain section of the building for the practice and even bring in others into the practice as it grows. i.e. nurses, theraperists, etc. Just a suggestion. :)

Love it, good for you! I’m 70 years old and about 30 years ago I begged and pleaded with my wife to turn an old gas station and garage into a home. The owners only wanted enough money to cover the closing costs. At the time a house restoration guy I knew estimated the cost of construction at about $150k. That seemed too high to my wife and eventually I had to give up the dream. The buildings were razed later. I kept all of the pictures and drawings we’d done and now my wife regrets her reluctance. We recently got ahold of an old lake house and remodeled and updated it. It’s nice and I’m proud but the memories of the old gas station still haunts me. Particularly on nights when I’m having trouble sleeping. Good luck to you.

I have always wanted to buy an old school and turn it into a house; that never happened, so I live vicariously through these kinds of videos LOL. My late husband's uncle and aunt raised 8 kids in a remodeled school. They kept a lot of the original features, including a fire escape slide from the second floor. They covered it and made it a fun slide for the kids. The huge blackboards in the main room were also kept, because they homeschooled. I just fell in love with that house! One downstairs bathroom was made into the boys' bath, and the other one for the girls. The kitchen was actually on the second floor, which I thought was really unusual. But it worked for them!

They can always add an elevator at a later time and when they have recovered from the challenges and finances poured into this. I can’t imagine! 👀. But there are other options besides full on elevators too. I’m 64 and about to sell my home in Bham, AL. Too large now with kids gone and the stairs are too much for me. I’ve had many ortho surgeries and one of my ankles is practically bionic, both feet with metal and an elbow fully reconstructed but it doesn’t bother me but the other surgical areas do and arthritis is creeping in swiftly. Just what I’ve learned and something to consider later. I am an animal rescuer. Everything but snakes and gators. Would love to know what you did for Bark.

If you have space in the basement, I'd put an apartment for each kid. Now they can be guests/grandparents or even on Airbnb. But I wish I had the space to let my kids know that our house is that--ours the whole family's, not just my husband's and mine, they will not be pressured to move out (though it's fine if they do) and if I could have an apartment for each of them, that could accommodate them with a future partner that would be great. Later, I could move into one of the apartments and their family could move into the main house. My dad was born on a farm that had two houses on it a big house and a small house. And it worked like that. When his older brother got married, my uncle and aunt lived in the small house. When their third child was born and my dad (the youngest was the only one left at home, he and his parents moved into the small house and my uncle's family moved into the big house. This had been going on for several generations, but unfortunately, the lifestyle of the 80s brought it to an end. My grandparents were the last to live in the small house. I feel like families lost their way and I'm so happy that you guys moved back to your hometown and are re-surrecting the big extended family home! Keep up the good work and thanks for putting this on KZbin for us to enjoy too.

A few points many of which are for the longer term. Consider adding loft spaces for the kid's beds in the bedrooms to take advantage of the high ceilings. As they get older they will want more individual space and this will do it. Otherwise they have the paradox of having ceiling space that's huge but smaller floor space. Also consider adding ceiling fans to the larger spaces. The type I'm thinking of, is reverse cycle ones. So when you want to keep the room warm, you reverse the spin and the blades are angled to keep the heat down. Otherwise your heating costs are going to be colossal. Obviously it's great for the summer staying cooler. Another possibility for the longer term is using geothermal methods for heating. Expensive yes, but longer term it's fantastic. For adaptable seating in a large lounge room that won't make it look empty when not populated by a crowd, try having a long window bench that runs the length of the room. Then you can use underneath for storage and can put foldable chairs in there. On top you have long bench cushions and some throw cushions. You can break it up by having some spaces just with wooden surface for putting plants, or cups and plates etc down. If wide enough it can also be used for beds for stay overs or tired children or adults to have a rest. For inexpensive rugs, try buying floor carpets and have them overlocked at the edges. In this how you can keep the integrity and beauty of the wooden floors but have the comfort of rugs. Obviously this way you can choose the precise size you need. And hopefully choose interesting and compatible colours. A final point: when you are using rugs, place them at the end of the bed just under the legs. It helps fill out the room and doesn't look so odd. If you want the comfort of carpet under feet. for getting in and out of bed and/or for hallways, have strips made for this purpose see above. Also consider hard wearing options like sisal which is warm looking without being expensive. Hope these suggestions are useful to you. Cheers from Australia.

Your 3 yr journey kept on popping up under my recommendations because 3 of my homesteaders that I watch are doing renovations. One is an old horse barn that they lived in for 18 yrs (moving back in hopefully by the middle/end of September) finally renovated for a family of 6 on 70+ acres in Western NC. The other is remodeling their kitchen and their house 50-60s so it’s perfect for their little family of 3. The last one is living in an old trailer on that he and their community helped build from the inside out they are a family of 8 and the boys have one big room ( boys: twins 17, 15, 11. Girls 4 and a newborn). They are building a girls room with a bigger laundry room and a deck from the ground up. It’s slow going because of all the rain they are getting. Both of those families are in the same county in the foothills of North Carolina so they are neighbors as well as coming from California. All 3 have gardens and animals. I love watching old buildings brought back to life either a home or an unconventional commercial space. I’ve watched several 1800s houses be rehabilitated, old churches with rectory when the church either downsized or moved on to a bigger place.

Very good old building. Can't wait to see how it looks when completed. There are 2 schools in the town I live in that were turned into homes...1 school is now a church/Christian School, and it was the school I went to for a couple years....the cafeteria was in the basement. Right above the cafeteria was the Kindergarten classroom, then down the hall was 1st, and 2nd grade....3rd grade classroom was next to the kindergarten classroom. 4th and 5th grade were in a modular building...and the library was also in a modular building. I was only at that school for a couple years, but I have so many memories of it because it was an old building, the cafeteria in the basement was really cool, and being below ground it made for a good root cellar too for vegetables and fruits...wasn't anything made in that cafeteria out of boxes...the cooks made everything from scratch back then, and I had the experience of helping do dishes, serve food, etc. quite often...loved it, and miss that old school. When they closed it down, it sat empty for many years, then a group bought it, renovated it, and reopened it as a church and Christian school, so even all these years later its still being used as a school.
