You brothers how I love you! Joseph has always been my best friend before I joined the Church. My mother spoke highly of him although she knew little of your knowledge. He was sold and I was kidnapped when I was 7 years old and after years of getting to know my God I also see how good He was and how much He polished me. Fascinating to know that through Manasseh came the people of the Book of Mormon and through Ephraim came the people to preach the message of the Book of Mormon to all the world - a fruitful bough, indeed - blessing the other tribes of the world just as Joseph did in the OT.

What do you make of the pretty consistent pattern of the younger son getting/being worthy of the birthright when it’s clear it should be the older/-est son? I’m trying to see how that relates to God’s plan, the Savior, orderliness in covenant life, the gospel in general. I can’t come up with anything

Great question. James Kugel (How to Read the Bible: A Guide to Scripture, Then and Now, Free Press, 2008) shares that some interpreters see these legends as geopolitical realities of the time of the early monarchy in Israel. These stories of birthright tribal designations could be related to the political and geographical realities that existed at the time scholars believed that these traditions were textualized. Of course, I don't know, as I was not there. But this is one approach to these ideas. Why use deception (like the cup) instead of being straightforward? I recognize the value of proving the brothers, but cannot help but wonder, was there no other way? Is there some symbolism associated in eastern tradition of which we are unfamiliar?
