After months of COVID lockdown, the HARS Aviation Museum at Albion Park, NSW, Australia, ended 2021 with quite a spectacular burst of activity -- the Wings over Illawarra airshow, a very busy Tarmac Weekend and, after nearly 20 years, the engine start-up of our tri-motor Southern Cross replica of Charles Kingsford Smith's first fight across the Pacific in 1928. Saved from wreckers in Tahiti by HARS back in 1989, our former French Navy Lockheed P2V-7 also got a much-needed engine run and taxi around the Museum.
Our video opens with a run up the Illawarra Coast aboard restored RAN Iroquois 898 - known affectionately as Huey 898 - and circling over Stanwell Park, Australia's most popular hang-gliding spot and famous for the first flight by aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave back in 1894 and illustrated here by an earlier re-enactment by HARS volunteers. And then back down past Wollongong, Lake Illawarra and into Shellharbour Regional Airport where our Museum is located. And then an exciting visual run through everything that's happened as December -- and a tumultuous 2021 -- come to a close.
In addition to video by Tim May & Carl Robinson, we are very pleased to feature the work of our very talented photographer Howard Mitchell.
