Have you ever watched LOST? There is a fictional Scotch on that show called "MacCutcheon" It's presented as an extremely expensive and rare scotch. I think one of the main "antagonists" (since you know, the line between protagonist and sntagonist in that show is blurred) mentions his MacCutcheon is a 60 year old bottle. I've always assumed that it was a reference to Macallen.

I was at my favorite Whisk(e)y bar on Tuesday and after a glass of Jameson followed by a Green Spot, the proprietor treated me to a glass of Four Roses Single Barrel (his generosity was engendered by a small food mishap). Upon receiving the glass of neat whiskey and nosing it, I was taken aback by an abrupt aroma that I couldn't place. After careful contemplation I identified it as the potent smell of permanent marker. The smell was so prominent in the glass that I was unable to smell anything else in the whiskey for nearly 10 minutes, after which time my senses had adjusted to what I assumed was the change from the pot still Green Spot to a cask-strength bourbon. After I adjusted, the glass was quite enjoyable, but this is probably the first whiskey that I've had to fight with before enjoying.

My explanation for smooth is Guinness...there's lots of dark beers and stouts on the market, but Guinness is one of the few that is creamy and rounded and doesn't have any sharp spiky flavors poking out...even the bitterness and dark chocolate and coffee notes are very polished and easygoing...most other brands have lots of sharp spiky bitter flavors that give way to a creamy finish, but Guinness is smooth from start to finish...

Middletons Very Rare is pretty much my favorite. Boss Hogg III(the Independent) was probably all time favorite.
@jonathanmunroe35977 жыл бұрын
I think the whole thing with classic whiskeys like middleton very rare is its relatable to old world wines vs new world wines. French wines in particular were delicate and elegant and were intentionaly made that way to pair with food as opposed to the new world wines. Eg. A glass of amazing bold californian cab sav as opposed to a west bank bordeux. And i like both. I really love the simplicity and enjoyment of a middleton v. Rare but at the same time love something as complex as a 3 cask finish yellow spot or the method and madness deep earthy sweetness of a french chestnut cask. Dont think id come out of the bourbon trail with a functional body but some day ill make an attempt. Have a collegue whose an amazing somillier and she makes a good point. Tis all about the wood. For me at least. Enjoy your videos man. Keep it up.

hi i'm trying to start a craft whiskey distillery here in las vegas. should I go to that whiskey college first, which costs $400 and gives you 20 videos and supposedly teaches everything from farming to paperwork of being a distiller? (i've been to law school, which teaches you literally how to read, most people don't know that's what law school teaches) or should I self study, get the equipment, get the license and go in rough no lube?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, if you're starting your own distillery, it would be worth the money to go to one of American Distilling Institute's events where you spend 2-3 days learning the process from start to finish. But also get the books, google, and study on your own. distilling.com/events/distilling-workshops/

charlie.g.hague Hey Charlie. Nice talking to you. Yeah... I do have an Islay but it's the Bruichladdich Port Charlotte (heavily peated). The other close-ish option I guess would be the Talisker 10. Anyway, I shall compensate the lack of Lagavulin with two different whiskeys. That'll show them! :)

Ok! I have a story for you guys on the progressive introduction to amazing whisk(e)y's. As you may remember, I recently celebrated the birth of my first child, a beautiful daughter. Her life also marks the first grandchild in my family, and fist niece. In preparation for said event, and largely thanks to you magnificent bastards, I procured 4 glencairn glass' and a bottle of Lagavulin 16 to accompany my slowly growing collection. While celebrating one evening with my parents and sister, I poured my poured my father and myself a glass of the Lagavulin, and started my sister on a glass of Johnnie Walker Black. All of us were enjoying our whisky's so I asked my sister if she would like to smell the difference between the two choices. She accepted and was shocked at the difference of the smell with quite a positive reaction, that being so my next obvious question was would she like to try the Lagavulin. I poured her a glass and her eyes lit up and mouth dropped in amazement. Her reaction was that it tasted like hanging out around a campfire with friends, and the taste to her was very smooth. At that moment, I was an incredibly proud brother!

This is an amazing story. And I love the description of "hanging around a campfire with friends" . It captures both the actual taste and the emotional impact for me too.

I would normally classify it as "drunk munchies" but what sort of"munchies" food pairs well with drinking different types of whiskey? Would this be a proper thing for a future episode?

You guys should do an Indiana bourbon. My favorite is W.H. Harrison but I think there are quite a few good ones.

Yes, they tend to get overshadowed by MGP, but there are some tasty crafts in that state!

That would be another good topic to cover if you haven't already.

I wonder, can you try Blanton's Bourbon? It's a bit hard to get (I had to get on a waiting list to get it). I was wonder what your thoughts on it would be.

Daniel, you mentioned that you keep your budget whiskies at home in decanters, is there a purpose to this?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
Mainly, I love how whisky in decanters looks. But you also don't want to leave it in there long. Because of that, I use all my go to budget whiskeys so I know they won't sit in there too long.

I here Andrew Cortez say the biscuit war is not over! I love the channel really do and I still haven’t drank real whiskey just shots of black label but saving up to make a mini vault. Anywhore the reason I say the war is not over in episode 148 the Johnnie Walker Green Label at 3min30sec - 3min40sec Daniele (sorry if I miss spelled your name) says Biscuit as in cookies so Rex I love your craziness and and how awesomely funny you are but I give the win to Daniel( again trying different spelling and sorry if spelled wrong) any ways cheers to the success on the Chanel and can’t wait for the live stream!

Tap water comes right out the fawcet at my place so I'll be passing on the Jameson. I have to lick stamps and send out some bills later so that nixes the Makers Mark. I think the glenfiddich and Dalmore are available. Guess I will have to settle for some scotch...

Have you ever tried the Italian Puni whiskey? I'm in Italy at the moment, saw a bottle and I'm contemplating it. As far as my research says, it's the only whiskey made in Italy?

Sadly I shall be working during the live stream and would like to put 2 questions out there. 1) Is there any whiskey that given the opportunity to mooch Rex would pass on? 2) What was the first whiskey that each of you had that started your love for the spirit? Good luck with the live stream.
