We sampled a MVR 2019 at a wedding (it was a 100th birthday gift to grandma). Incredibly smooth and it inspired us to begin our Irish Whiskey journey. We just recently picked up a bottle of the 2022 and are saving it for our 40th wedding anniversary in about two years. (assuming we can resist that long...)

I have always been a fan of Irish whiskeys. A decade ago a new Irish pub opened up in town and I discovered Midleton Very Rare. Have been a huge fan of it ever since and have introduced quite a few friends to it too. Recently bought a bottle to have at home,,that one doesnt get shared much 😉

Before I tried Ardbeg 10 I thought the only way I could drink whisky was in cocktails or with coke but after trying that I fell in love with the aggressive smoke and strong flavours of it and have been gleefully enjoying whisky neat since.

Maybe late to the game but I decided to give Scotch Whisky and Whiskey another shot after being turned off having Johnnie Walker Black and asked a friend of mine for advice he told me to grab a Bowmore 12yr old Single Malt - Islay and it was my gateway, and since I've found this channel I've started a nice little Whisk(e)y collection.

My buddy and ups driver. Irish whiskey Brian knew I was a bourbon guy and hooked me up with this a couple years ago. It's is my go to Irish whiskey. I will drink cost friendly bourbon and scotch. That being said when it comes to the Irish it's this bottle or green spot almost exclusively. Enjoyed the review.

Have you ever watched LOST? There is a fictional Scotch on that show called "MacCutcheon" It's presented as an extremely expensive and rare scotch. I think one of the main "antagonists" (since you know, the line between protagonist and sntagonist in that show is blurred) mentions his MacCutcheon is a 60 year old bottle. I've always assumed that it was a reference to Macallen.

Got a bottle of Octomore 6.1 today because it was mentioned as highly smoky. Just back to back compared it to Lag 16, smoky to me is equal, Octomore is more smooth. But at 1/2 the price Lag 16 is superior. I'll have some Lag 16 ready for the stream.

I was at my favorite Whisk(e)y bar on Tuesday and after a glass of Jameson followed by a Green Spot, the proprietor treated me to a glass of Four Roses Single Barrel (his generosity was engendered by a small food mishap). Upon receiving the glass of neat whiskey and nosing it, I was taken aback by an abrupt aroma that I couldn't place. After careful contemplation I identified it as the potent smell of permanent marker. The smell was so prominent in the glass that I was unable to smell anything else in the whiskey for nearly 10 minutes, after which time my senses had adjusted to what I assumed was the change from the pot still Green Spot to a cask-strength bourbon. After I adjusted, the glass was quite enjoyable, but this is probably the first whiskey that I've had to fight with before enjoying.

There has to be a first time to comment so here goes: my god rex that smug little grin of yours gets worse with every glass, i love it. now there are 2 quite interesting brands that i have not seen yet on the show: Springbank and Glengoyne, both affordable and findable for the average mortal, and to my humble opinion with nice and distinct taste profiles. for Springbank DanDan over there can even quote the awesome story on how Springbank got the region 'Campbeltown' to be acknowlaged as an official whisky region and include the obligatory background story about the towns history regarding whisky. Alright thats enough for a first time ,you guys are awsome, keep up the good fun over there. all the best from The Netherlands.

My explanation for smooth is Guinness...there's lots of dark beers and stouts on the market, but Guinness is one of the few that is creamy and rounded and doesn't have any sharp spiky flavors poking out...even the bitterness and dark chocolate and coffee notes are very polished and easygoing...most other brands have lots of sharp spiky bitter flavors that give way to a creamy finish, but Guinness is smooth from start to finish...

Wow, not that I live under a rock, but I spend most of my day at work or sipping some great Whiskeys or Scotches when I am finally home. I stumbled across your site while registering at the Midleton site after adding my latest purchase of the 2017 Very Rare. I appreciate the review you did and hate you at the same time because I added three more bottle of Irish Whiskey to add to my home bar just to give them a try. So much for finally getting off work to sip and savor, now I'll have to log some overtime to pay the liquor store bill.

I think the whole thing with classic whiskeys like middleton very rare is its relatable to old world wines vs new world wines. French wines in particular were delicate and elegant and were intentionaly made that way to pair with food as opposed to the new world wines. Eg. A glass of amazing bold californian cab sav as opposed to a west bank bordeux. And i like both. I really love the simplicity and enjoyment of a middleton v. Rare but at the same time love something as complex as a 3 cask finish yellow spot or the method and madness deep earthy sweetness of a french chestnut cask. Dont think id come out of the bourbon trail with a functional body but some day ill make an attempt. Have a collegue whose an amazing somillier and she makes a good point. Tis all about the wood. For me at least. Enjoy your videos man. Keep it up.

Daniel, hope it's not too late to post a question for the Live Feed Saturday? This just came to me as I was looking at some white dog whiskies and thinking, why not put them in a small barrel and see what happens? How long could I age this, months, years? Is there anything besides just filling it up and forgetting about it that needs to be done?

YES. Definitely do this. I've done it a few times with completely different results. Just fill it and taste it weekly until it reaches what you think is it's best.

Ah hoy rex and daniel! short time watch, second time caller! 2 questions: 1)finding whisk(e)y you like, going to a bar and seeing what they have and experimenting (at a premium price, per glass) or buying the smallest bottle you can get, and going from there? 2) i've seen you guys do a few videos on drinking kerosene, err moonshine. hi i'm trying to start a craft whiskey distillery here in las vegas. should I go to that whiskey college first, which costs $400 and gives you 20 videos and supposedly teaches everything from farming to paperwork of being a distiller? (i've been to law school, which teaches you literally how to read, most people don't know that's what law school teaches) or should I self study, get the equipment, get the license and go in rough no lube?

Honestly, if you're starting your own distillery, it would be worth the money to go to one of American Distilling Institute's events where you spend 2-3 days learning the process from start to finish. But also get the books, google, and study on your own. distilling.com/events/distilling-workshops/

You guys crack me up. I'm learning a lot about nosing whisky from you. I have been on a tour of the Scottish Isles in my collection over the past few months, and while I enjoy the complexity you speak of, I'm still partial to what I hear you refer to as "desert whisky," namely the Glenmorangie 18 Extremely Rare. Have you tried it? Thanks for challenging my selections. I hope to one day have owned a bottle from all 108 Scotch distilleries. And a few of everything else along the way.

I had Midleton Very Rare in a flight at Parallel Wine Bistro's Whiskey Bar (in NoVA), and it was amazing! First thought: NO WAY I can spend $150 a bottle on whiskey!!!! Second/winning thought: I spend more than that on a bottle of wine that is opened/finished in one opening on special occasions with friends, and I can enjoy a bottle of Midleton Very Rare for a LONG time -- so it is well worth the price!!!!!

Sweet, I'll just consider it an early gift to myself then. That's the $165 one correct? I want to be certain I am looking at the correct one. Another question I have is for the weekend live stream, I was happy to see that I already have Jameson and Makers Mark on hand. My question is about what should I get as a third choice since those two are your typical whiskys. I'm basically asking what you might recommend out of the remaining three that I could go purchase as a beginner whisky drinker. Thanks in advance.

charlie.g.hague Hey Charlie. Nice talking to you. Yeah... I do have an Islay but it's the Bruichladdich Port Charlotte (heavily peated). The other close-ish option I guess would be the Talisker 10. Anyway, I shall compensate the lack of Lagavulin with two different whiskeys. That'll show them! :)

To add to the biscuit vs cookie turmoil. When you said biscuit I always understood you to mean biscuit (or victory if USA) malt. But you are literally talking about cookies/biscuits as in the food? I guess the aroma/flavors are similar, but not really the same thing.

So how come Bushmills survived? Was it because it was in Northern Ireland? Plus I've heard of American biscuit Rex, had them whilst on holiday in the US, not a fan.
@WhiskeyVault

Yeah, it was the whole Republic of Ireland vs Northern Ireland thing. But they didn't outlast it completely. They were eventually bought by Midleton too.

Whiskey Vault oh I didn't know that, it's a lovely distillery, it's right in the middle of Bushmills town. I drank some powers at their gate a few years ago.

Argh, I'm going to be out when the stream starts, but when I get back I'll join you with either some Glendalough 13, or possibly some J.P. Wiser's Union 52, which is a 52 year old Malt Whisky blended with a 16 year old rye. It's really tasty, but becoming quite rare now as it was an exclusive for my Provincial LCB (BC Liquor).

Ok! I have a story for you guys on the progressive introduction to amazing whisk(e)y's. As you may remember, I recently celebrated the birth of my first child, a beautiful daughter. Her life also marks the first grandchild in my family, and fist niece. In preparation for said event, and largely thanks to you magnificent bastards, I procured 4 glencairn glass' and a bottle of Lagavulin 16 to accompany my slowly growing collection. While celebrating one evening with my parents and sister, I poured my poured my father and myself a glass of the Lagavulin, and started my sister on a glass of Johnnie Walker Black. All of us were enjoying our whisky's so I asked my sister if she would like to smell the difference between the two choices. She accepted and was shocked at the difference of the smell with quite a positive reaction, that being so my next obvious question was would she like to try the Lagavulin. I poured her a glass and her eyes lit up and mouth dropped in amazement. Her reaction was that it tasted like hanging out around a campfire with friends, and the taste to her was very smooth. At that moment, I was an incredibly proud brother!

This is an amazing story. And I love the description of "hanging around a campfire with friends" . It captures both the actual taste and the emotional impact for me too.

I would normally classify it as "drunk munchies" but what sort of"munchies" food pairs well with drinking different types of whiskey? Would this be a proper thing for a future episode?

Daniel, you mentioned that you keep your budget whiskies at home in decanters, is there a purpose to this?
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 7 жыл бұрын
Mainly, I love how whisky in decanters looks. But you also don't want to leave it in there long. Because of that, I use all my go to budget whiskeys so I know they won't sit in there too long.

I here Andrew Cortez say the biscuit war is not over! I love the channel really do and I still haven’t drank real whiskey just shots of black label but saving up to make a mini vault. Anywhore the reason I say the war is not over in episode 148 the Johnnie Walker Green Label at 3min30sec - 3min40sec Daniele (sorry if I miss spelled your name) says Biscuit as in cookies so Rex I love your craziness and and how awesomely funny you are but I give the win to Daniel( again trying different spelling and sorry if spelled wrong) any ways cheers to the success on the Chanel and can’t wait for the live stream!

Tap water comes right out the fawcet at my place so I'll be passing on the Jameson. I have to lick stamps and send out some bills later so that nixes the Makers Mark. I think the glenfiddich and Dalmore are available. Guess I will have to settle for some scotch...

Sadly I shall be working during the live stream and would like to put 2 questions out there. 1) Is there any whiskey that given the opportunity to mooch Rex would pass on? 2) What was the first whiskey that each of you had that started your love for the spirit? Good luck with the live stream.
