For the maximum parallax error calculation, you forgot to divide by the fixed parallax setting (in this case 100)? We're talking 157.5" versus the correct answer: 1.57".

Really enjoying your podcasts. Thanks for the tips on setting up the scope I had no idea what it actually entailed. Very new to rifle. When you all brought up archery and talking about how it it improved your rifle shooting. You hit home. I would buy a rifle couldn’t stand shooting shooting them was getting frustrated so I would sell them. When I finally started with archery everything clicked with rifle and now I am enjoying shooting rifles.

Show Idea.... Could you guys do an 10 minute episode on the internals of scopes, and how they work. The number of lenses, how they move and are adjusted. Maybe a cut in half scope body that allows us to visualize what's happening inside the body. What if any shortcuts cheep scopes use in comparison to a quality scope. And do fixed power scopes have less parts, or lenses inside the body? Does one less lens make them transmit more light? PS.. my last 4 scopes have been Vortex scopes, they are a better value than the Leupold scopes I have always purchased before, great products, with fantastic clarity.

Maybe I missed something. But I was getting terrible groups with my last scope. It was working properly but when I went to shoot I noticed I was able to get 2 groups 3" apart just from moving my head left then grouping with my head all the way right. Same went for up and down. This was a cheap scope sig buck master with no adjustable parallax. Tried the same test with my better scope diamondback tactical with parallax adjustment and I did not experience any shift in my groups. I can shoot under 1/2 moa with a 7mm and under 1MOA with my 6.5 creedmoor. When I moved to the better scope with the 6.5 it grouped consistently within 1/2MOA. So from what I've seen a scope with no parallax adjustment can throw your shot off significantly at 100 yards. So for long range practice parallax is very important for accuracy.

I love y’all’s scopes and binoculars. The first vortex scope i used was the diamondback 4-12x40 on a 17 HMR and I brought it out to 280 yards no joke. Then I went on to by my first vortex scope witch is the crossfire 2 3-9x40 and I got me a deer last season with it. Then I got my brother to by him the same scope for his rifle and I got my neighbor to get him and his son two diamondback 4-12x40, and just a couple months ago I went and got me a new rifle and the VIPER HS 4-16x44 with the Crossfire HD 10x42 binoculars and my neighbor is fixing to go and get him one of the VIPER HS 4-16x44 as well once he gets his new 7mm-08

Thanks for more schooling on parallax or also called objective focus. I have come to the conclusion that on a variable scope of 14x or less, the parallax adjust is not really a huge advantage, and when shooting at 100-300 yards mainly. I think I will focus my money more so on optical quality, for say a 4-12x scope. Everyone however does love to have the ability to focus the scope at any range for view ability and parallax minimizing, but as pointed out, but not as necessary unless shooting very long range small targets or varmint at 14x and much greater optical power.

Just shows how good leupold scopes are even the freedom line. The fixed paralax is 150yards and targets even as close as 25 yards are still crystal clear . Leupold for the 🏆 💪

So I did the math as it was described (maybe I heard it wrong) and it worked out to 157 inches… reverse engineered it based on the answer you came up with of 1.57. The formula should be: (range - parallax setting)/10 x (objective size/2) =max parallax error. So given your example (300-100)/10x(40/2)=40mm or approximately 1.57”

correct one is 0.5 x D x ( Abs ( R - P ) ) / P, so your reverse engineering is correct for parallax setting = 100, but will be wrong for another parallax “mark”

I'm also getting 7MOA-ish (70.87") max error at 1,000 yrds. (20mm X 900)/100 = 180mm = 70.87". He said angle of error decreases with range, 7MOA-ish at 1,000 yrds is not "less of an error angle" than 0.5MOA-ish at 300 yrds.

How does focal length effect depth of field? Heard that longer scopes have a better depth of field then a shorter scopes due to longer focal length, any truth in this? Thanks for any replies.

yeah, thats true. But often lower zoom increased DOF, so if you have a fixed focus system lower the magnification and you get less error also..

Think of looking at a clock face, looking at it "Square On", the clock hands are dead in line with the Numbers. Stand to the Right, say at 30 degrees, the clock looks a couple of minutes Fast. Stand to the Left & the clock looks a couple of minutes Slow. That's "Parallax" in a Nutshell.

I'm sorry but, the equation that Mike gave & it doesn't seem to be quite correct. I listened very carefully to both instances during the vid when Mike explained the equation & I'm reasonably sure I understood what he said &, it's kinda missing some math which, is easy enough to do with all the chatter going on. I think he may have been interrupted at a critical time during his explanation. Here's what it should be; ((Td - Pf)x Obj)/2 x Pf or Obj x (Td-Pf)/ 2 x Pf Where; Td = target distance Pf = parallax focus of scope Obj = objective Dia in mm I'm not trying to be petty but, in both instances when Mike explains the equation, it's missing half the math.

@@BG-qo8ol No, Td & Pf are a ratio constant for a particular distance. I think the td & Pf can be metric but must both be metric or, both imperial, it doesn't matter in order to correctly represent the ratio of target distance to parallax setting distance. You can also input the objective in inches eg: 56mm = 2.204". That seems to work just as well.

First of all, thank you for clarifying the formula because I thought he was just using “hundreds of yards” which is something we often do in our community, and it happened to render the same answer in his example. Also, I've taken the liberty of rewriting it from “/2 x PF” to “x 0.5 / PF” which removes the ambiguity of whether or not the PF is in the denominator or numerator. Let me know if I did that wrong. So for example: 56mm obj, TD = 300, PF = 100 56mm x |300-100| x 0.5 / 100 = 56mm But if we set the PF 200 long instead of 200 short (PF=500), then: 56mm x |300-500| x 0.5 / 500 = 11.2mm, which suggests that it would be better to err on the long side than the short side: is this correct or am I missing something?

there is way to counter-act the lack of paralax/focus. Just back out from the scope until you have a black ring - then center that ring. then your eye is in line with the croshairs and target. just like diopter-shooters do. this is what i do when i need to shoot stuff longer away then my paralax.. not that i matters more often, im often well close to correct anyway.

Absolute distance 300 minus parallax setting 100 = 200. That 200 is then multiplied with objective lens (40mm) divided by 2. That is 200 x 40 / 2 = 4000. How did that 1.57inch came from?? LOL!

I was a little confused by this as well. I think the formula is: O*.5*(ABS(P-R))/P where O is the objective diameter in mm, P is the parallax setting in Yds, and R is the range in yards. This should give the parallax error in mm
