i worked for a mega carrier. i gave 2 weeks notice by email and phone. 3 weeks later,i asked by email and phone where they wanted me to park their unit. i got to deadhead 1100 miles and got paid for it. they didnt even mess with my fuel card or final settlement.

Great video! You're absolutely on point. I'll add this. And this goes for most every industry out there. When you go to leave one job to move on to another, do everything you can to avoid burning bridges. Leave on good terms! You never know if something might not work out at the new gig, you might need to go back to your former employer and see if you can go back. Another KZbin trucker did just that when things weren't working out as well as expected at his new job. He had left on good terms and was able to go right back and get right back into the same truck he had. Sometimes these things are learning experiences, and that's perfectly OK. I'm not a trucker, I am an IT dude, but this stuff applies to most any employer out there.

I agree - trucking is the absolute rectum of careers! Great video, I'm going to use this in my motivational series; far too often, I see people with substance abuse (myself included, horrible paint huffing addiction); fall for the cons of a trucking career. I commend you sir!

I only agree that you should have your next job lined up before you quit. Most companies I have worked for will tell you to clean out your truck as soon as you give your 2 week notice. Also they will NOT give you a 2 week notice if they lay you off or terminate your employment with them. When you resign they MUST pay you, your accrued vacation time. I have never wanted to return to a company I have quit. If I quit there was a good reason! Also No need to worry about a bad reference because when your new company asks about your previous employment with the companies you have quit, all they can legally say is yes you worked there and No you did not fail the drug test and no accidents.

Another great video. The trick is to take the high road and be professional. Easier said than done if you're completely miserable and/or management sucks. Still, stay on the high road. If management sucks, don't stoop to their level. Aside from burning bridges, we're all better than that.

Good video, Mark...and, no truer words spoken! My situations were different, as, most of my jobs, before becoming an owner operator ions ago, were working FOR owner operators! Most of them never reported to DAC, and, they had no benefits, of course. I never abandoned a truck, and, I am really glad you put this point across to the 'new guys on the block!

Great info! How to handle the "delicate situation" of the final two weeks? Well, after you give notice, at the end of the first week, re-affirm your intent to terminate your employment, and remind whoever, of your intent, then as the final week culminates, I would say, every second or third day, remind them of the need to get a load towards company property to turn your equipment in. IF in the last few days, it isn't looking like they are going to direct you towards company property, then advise them, that you are driving to company yard on the final day or two, to turn in your truck. Very important, do not just advise on phone, but in electronic message, so that you have proof of your intent, and that your two week notice wasn't proposed as "here-say", or that they claim that you never informed them of your intent.

2 week notice always should be in writing! IN WRITING, be professional and be honest with your resignation. Its really that simple, no company is going to keep you on the road more than a day or 2 past your resignation date.. most likely they will have you back a few days prior..... but hey anything is possible. I guess if it were me and they had me out after my resignation date I would complete the load I was on and then dead head back... Just my .02 cents.

I've only had 1 good outcome of giving 2 weeks notice. Your best move IMO is make sure you have the new job, figure you most likely want a week off before going to them, quit your company on a Friday by cleaning out your truck and turning in the stuff you need to. Take a video of everything you leave in the truck or turn in as they will try to charge you in most cases even if you left the items there. The 2 weeks notice stuff is for any other type of job but trucking IMO. There are to many ways for them to screw you in that last 2 weeks that it's not funny!! 1 example, driver I lived next to called and told the company he was giving his 2 week notice, 3 hours later company comes with a wrecker and picks up his truck and says he abandoned it. Take note that he was able to take his truck to his house with this company! :( All because he decided to move. That all went on his DAC!! :(

First and best trainer I had entering trucking did it with me in truck. Duck lined up empty trailer refused load and stated what yard truck would be in. They get notice and turn fuel off, now your not at a yard and possible no go juice. Leave of absence policy in employee manual? Regardless of you returning!

hey mark, I am for a little home time now, I am working for C.R England, the pay is really bad, but I am thankful that they helped me get my license, the instructors were really good, can't complain about that, ok so, anyways, I am about to get into phase 2 in a few days, should I quit? I have a contract for 12 months, and I only have 2 months in...is it better to stay in the company and finish the contract + get experience and suffer bad payment? or should I quit, and earn better pay and still pay the loan to the company?

I like Christopher Dixon's way, If your in a Bind( stessed or something) Take a month off but after 2 weeks give notice. With my co. If I was worried about them messing me over, I'd give the personnel/human resources dept a call, and find out who they say I need to notify. Good video.

Ok Mark I watched ur video. Did YOU give a 2 week notice?
@thetexastrucker79346 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of taking a leave of absence. Then when ur actually driving for the new company call them and tell them u won't be back or just tell them due to family issues u can't come back right now. For those that don't want to simply give a 2week notice which is probably just the easiest way.
@jsj2978 жыл бұрын
Dumb question, I'm not a trucker. If in 2 weeks, they don't send you back to the "yard" and try to keep you out in the field......why can't u just drive back to the yard on your agreed separation date?
@thetexastrucker79346 жыл бұрын
They would look at that as unauthorized movement of the truck. Especially for longer distances. And that would go on ur drivers resume somehow with them.

I'm looking for another opportunity and have been thinking about doing a video about the "2 week notice" and how I've dealt with it,just been kind of lazy with making video's lately...I'll get it done and share it with you...I've always seen the 2 week notice as a courtesy to the company...the company can get rid of you at any time with out notice,I'll explain more in the video...good topic,stay safe and have a good one

If they keep you out just drive to the neatest terminal and drop the truck.
@jameslane92675 жыл бұрын
Robert Sistrunk yep! Not considered abandonment. Did that with a company before. When I put in two weeks, on the 12th day they said they couldn’t get me a load back to my home terminal, I asked them if I dropped it off at the terminal 100 miles north of where I was would it be considered abandonment? They said no. Dropped it the next day and hopped on the plane.

Ok is Stevens Dms that way where thay will keep u on the road for ever or r they the type that under stand
@TexasArcadesTV8 жыл бұрын
I put in my 2 weeks notice @ Stevens and it took 4 weeks for DM to get me back to terminal. He always had an excuse why he couldn't find a load back to yard from where I was at, but promised that he would send me somewhere else where loads did go back to the yard, only to get there and magically no loads going back available like he promised. I like how the poster above did it... ask for a leave of absence and go to new company and when you get your truck and first load just call and them you are not going back. Stevens doesn't deserve a 2 week notice!

Incorrect completely if you are going to another training company. Training companies like swift Schneider Stevens and prime don’t care. Now if you are going to a real company like Coca Cola yes ya might want to get the truck back but as far as a notice no companies don’t look at that jack wagon line of bs.

I told my fleet manager 1 day before I got home I was quitting. She already kept me out a month and I only made about $1300. She didnt understand why I was quitting and I simply said I can make same amount of money flipping burgers and sleep in my bed every night. Her reply was what am I blowing my money on, as if it was any of her business, and also it was my choice of career, that I knew what to expect when I chose to drive a truck. I said I expected to be away from home but not to be treated like shit and get paid next to nothing for it. Luckily I had a co driver who was fed up as well so I dropped my last load 15 miles from home, grabbed my shit and was gone. Now they want me back, offering me a dedicated caterpillar accout with more money, more hometime, new truck and $2500 sign on bonus. Crst should of thought about that b4 I quit maybe I would still be there. Great starter company but to get anywhere with them you have to quit and come back, just to show them you mean business. Sad isn't it...

This video is for millennials. They are socially awkward and dont know how to do things right because there parents are too busy working there ass off trying to pay Bills. I grew up working for my f as the till I was 15 then I got a real job under the table. My father raised me to work hard and when time is up dont burn your bridge give that 2 weeks suck it up. This is a very good topic though, for those who truly don't know. Great videos keep em going, I'm going over to cr england when I'm back from my cruise

Do companies give you two weeks notice when they are firing you???? So why should you give them two weeks notice when you fire them!!
@curtisrohling58527 жыл бұрын
Awesome question. It just another example that companies have more rights than workers.
@hondacivic19926 жыл бұрын
Depends on the company, and depends why they fired you. If a company is laying you off because they are downsizing, they usually will give you notice. If you fucked up big time (sold fuel, hit a bridge, got a ton of violations), then you deserve to get fired on the spot.
