Ep. 201 MORE MOSES MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with silicone as my adhesive. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti.
0:05 Recap - I show the design for Moses Striking the Rock in the desert with some people. I am working on Moses this week.
0:24 Here's where I left off last week. I need to finish his arms and one hand. Then finish up with his clothing.
0:44 I start by finishing his right arm. Then I work on the right sleeve. Next, I move to the belt. I love this blue color!!!
2:05 Change of view. I am standing on the left side working sideways to cut out the pieces for Moses's outer tunic.
2:28 Once I have them all ready, I change to overhead so you can see me lay the pieces in place. I decide to finish all the red. It has nothing to do with avoiding the other hand. This goes pretty quickly. I am using three shades of red.
3:26 I finally move to his other arm. I explain that I really am working slowly. You are often watching time lapse, or just part of the process.
4:24 I just received a package from WitsEnd Mosaics and I am going to open it for you! It is for all three mosaics and will be split. It is GOLD SMALTI!!! I bought a variety of colors: Titanium, Cobalt Blue, Turquoise Blue, Wavy Azul gold, White gold nails, flat white gold, wavy white gold, black and gray. All of this will be used in the water.
6:15 I use contact paper to make a pattern for the long pieces. Then I can use the big pieces that are the correct shape and cut them down into smaller pieces. Sometimes I score through the contact paper and sometimes I cut the pieces out and score at the edge. Then I nip to shape it more accurately.
8:43 Finally, when all the pieces are nestled together, I cut them apart and glue them in place.
10:42 Here's how far I got this week! I finished all of Moses except for his feet. I started on the sandals, but that is it.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 201. Thanks for watching! See you next time.

Such dimensionality in the robe! Loved watching the clear Contact procedure & learning how to cut a larger piece to fit & then nipping into smaller pieces. I learn so much every week from watching ! Thank you!

Glad it was helpful! I probably should have explained that I sometimes nip down the length in between pieces so it doesn't get too long when spaced out.

Coming along nicely. Amazing how quickly Moses is coming to life. Choosing the right colors and shades is such a talent.

Try Peter Twining @Treasury Road on KZbin for basic instructions. I hand sketched the design on paper with colored pencils then went to a blueprint shop and had them enlarge it to the proper size.

@@francinestrever9647 Hi Francine, this is Julie's tip. She lays a small piece of clear contact over her pattern and marks the section she wants to cut next onto the contact with a fine permanent marker, then lays that whole piece over her glass and scores the shape through the contact. It will work on china also with straight cutters, as I used my new Seabell Cutters in some china on Sunday. Brilliant tip. 💕

You may have answered this question before but: Do you draw the things you mosiac? For example, is this picture of Moses something you drew based upon what your client asked for? You are very talented and the fact that you are self-taught gives me encouragement! Your ability to imagine things to put into your art (multi-layer frit balls, pulling multi-color stringers that I learned are properly called "filati") is amazing! It gives your creations that *magical* touch. Thank you for sharing your art and methods through video! 😊😊

Yes, I came up with two different designs for each scenario and the client chose from them. This one with Moses striking the rock went through the most changes until I added all the people and then it was approved. It was a difficult process as there are no reference photos of Moses! I ended up using family members to strike different poses as a starting point.

That looks incredible! You mentioned it's going on a wall: might I ask why you chose glass over other media? Just more vibrant color? Reflective qualities?
