Don’t dress to IMPRESS, Dress to EXPRESS. I don’t agree that people don’t judge you on your clothes. They do notice, but you can achieve great style with less.

YES! I love weird, beautiful and interesting clothes. When they said that they'd think 'what?" if Courtney walked in wearing MC Hammer pants, I thought "why? She would probably look awesome in them, especially with a heavy 90's boot and a racer back singlet. I love mixing eras, patterns, colours and it's about expression and art. It's like being a poem. If others notice (and they sometimes do) it's usually a lovely appreciative comment that reflects their own delicious self expression too! My clothes come from Op Shops and so my wardrobe is very eclectic. I like minimalism as it's a way to try and keep myself a little bit under control, but I am a Weirdness Warrior and also into the spiritual meaning of colours and how they make you feel! Don't pressure yourself to conform to a conservative minimalist palette, wear whatever you like! xxx

A Small Wardrobe here on KZbin is my absolute favorite person when it come to minimalist fashion. She proves that you can be "fashionable" and creative while also having a minimal wardrobe. And that's a good point about not caring- I get comments on my tattoos and my hair (it's dyed and VERY long), never really on my outfits. It really is about self expression rather than appearance.

Rather than keeping up with the latest trends and styles, the best option is to develop your own personal style. Wear what you love and what suits you best. You'll feel and look your best and that's what people will notice.

I consider my self a minimalist... I reconnected with my sewing skills and don’t hoard fabric and while dealing with ovarian cancer and then covert I started to sew and now I have a new summer wardrobe and I then donate items I don’t wear ... it kept me sane and gave my creative self more confidence ... I got to choose the right style and fabric that was right for me .. now I almost never shop only maybe for something I don’t or can’t make ...

All of my clothes, sheets and towels are of colors that are safe to do all in one load, so I never sort laundry and as a single person, only have to wash one load per week. I also use fryer balls or hang to dry.

As I present to my own community the idea of living more with less and the concept of minimalism, I am confronted with the reoccurring idea that being a minimalist means surrounding yourself with only straight lines and black, white and khaki...in your home and in your wardrobe. With all the books, videos and blogs showing this, It's easy to see why one may think this is the way to go. I would love to have a conversation about not having to lose color, patterns and dramatic lines to live an effective minimalist lifestyle. I'm doing it now.

I began embracing a minimalist lifestyle in the early 2000s. When the capsule wardrobe trend started up, I too cleared my closet. Big mistake. Huge. At first, it “felt” great, but in the long run it ended up being costly and wasteful (when I re-bought items that were given away). It wasn’t practical for me for several reasons. First, I live in a climate where vast fluctuations in weather conditions even within a season call for more clothing options. Second, I fluctuate between 2 dress sizes. Lastly, my particular career calls for different types of attire depending on the day - from yoga wear at my home office, formal suits at conferences, dress casual at the office, and jeans and work boots when I’m onsite at farms. Kudos to all the California bloggers living the capsule wardrobe dream!

That’s why Courtney doesn’t recommend “getting rid” of clothing but “putting” it away. And every three months you can recalibrate your thirty three items which will help when the seasons change.

I was born to. Minimalist.i was born in the 1950s To parents born in early 1920s. I started school in 1957 with 3 new skirts and four new blouses all coordinating so that I could wear a skirt one day hang it up and wear another skirt everything got washed on Monday so my clothes were all rotated. I continued this trend into my adulthood my clothes last me 5 years or more and everyday clothes can be pressed with starch to be made to look nearly brand new. I have been living for the past 3 months with one pair of pants three shorts and five t-shirts. I have not found this to be a problem although my colors vary when I have my whole wardrobe in my house I am more comfortable with denim and maybe 10 t-shirts I have one outfit for church which is coordinated dress shirt and full-length jacket or short jacket every time I wear it it's different I'm not a big shoe person I have one pair of shoes I wear every day one pair of tennis shoes for fun days an exercise days but in the winter time when the snow starts to fall I wear my ugg boots which I purchased in Black which goes with denim and everything else I have I have ugg shoes but summertime flip flops or sandals two pair of flip-flops and one pair of sandals so Born this Way. I'm a grandma of 22 grandchildren seven of which I have raised and they have been taught minimalism from the beginning and doing quite well. Linda from Sedona Arizona

I tried the whole trendy thing, constantly buying new clothes which I would wear once maybe twice. But I always felt like crap about myself. But I've slowly realised that my style is more basic and simple. And I am most comfortable in a simple tshirt and jeans and I'm ok with that. I've finally reached a point where I dont care what people think of me or what I wear because I am happy and comfortable

So agree when it comes to trendy things. How many of us look back on old photos from let’s just say the 80’s and either make fun or are completely embarrassed by what we were wearing? When we look back on photos of say someone like Audrey Hepburn they are timeless and beautiful. No ones laughing at her outfits if anything we are trying to copy them.

Thank you soooo much for this. I have been decluttering since 2018. I felt sooo relieved and happy after my very first decluttering thingy. Right tthen and there I realized and was surprised that I have clothes I haven't worn. Now, I am on the process of still decluttering my stuff and buying only those stuff which are needed. My clothes aren't all black and white though my husband's stuff are all black, white and gray. I love it on him though. But me, I love colors. I love it when my clothes represent my person.

I love Courtney's Project 333 book. I've been doing the project for the past three months with great success and joy. I very rarely wear black on my upper body, preferring colour instead. One fab thing about her book is that there are lots of examples of people doing the project who aren't using black or even neutrals. The other aspect I like about the book is that she encourages flexibility. Maybe 40 items is what you need. That's fine.

I've been working on being more of a minimalist for the last 2 years. I have learnt so much about myself through organizing my closet several times. I highly recommend girls/women to watch Daria Andronescu channel. She gives amazing tips and examples on building not a capsule but an interchangeable wardrobe for women. I'm working as a manager in corporate world - which means that I always have to stay sharp, but I feel absolutely comfortable in Uniqlo, Levis and Banana Republic. I only invest a few key pieces in Calvin Klein, but most of them are in plain white or navy which are my favorite colors.

About reading, I love to read and I do reading challenges but have cut back the number of books I pledged to read this year. A coworker is an author and explained to me how hard authors work to put words on pages. So instead of rushing through books she suggested I read them slowly enjoying, appreciating pondering and taking time to pause over the effort put into each authors words.

This video happened 3 yrs ago so I don’t expect to be heard. But you may consider something called Fashion Feng Shui where wearing black is a function of a creative/philosophical energy that serves a type of person who is of the water essence. Flow, movement, angles, philosophy. That being said, creatives like me who are washed out in black (blondes… the dark brunettes/light skin tones looks great as their contrast complements black near their face) have to find something else… white? Ivory? Beige? Olive? Just some food for thought when you boast about your black with a pop of personality. Shape and texture can also be a choice, not just color. Another energy (metal for instance, prefers sleek fabrics and tailored silhouettes). When you do the work to determine your essence (pro level also influence and intention) It makes buying/editing your choices to stuff you’ll actually wear much easier and rewarding.

People don’t notice what you wear is contradicting an earlier statement that the best dressed were those who were trying the 333 project. People do notice how you look, which perhaps doesn’t mean you must wear different clothes every day and therefore own a massive amounts of clothes to look good

To Rachel who wants to stay on trend I would say get some key pieces which are classics and spend your best amount on quality. Maybe jeans, some basic shirts and Ts, a winter coat etc. Add some on trend, less expensive pieces such as a bag/purse, item of jewellery etc. Add accessories to bring in the trendy element and then donate or give away when they have served your purpose. People advise you to be yourself, but if it makes you happy to add some current items to your wardrobe then surely that is you being yourself.

I don't know if this comment will be seen since it's an older video now, but If you're somebody who wants to have less clothes but still really likes crazy patterns and colors and things like that, I recommend just not being afraid to let your wardrobe staples be weird If it suits you anyway. I'm in the process of getting rid of most of my stuff so that I can move to another country, which means getting rid of a lot of my clothes. I think most people would go about it thinking that they should just keep the things that go with everything because they're plain, but personally I'm thinking of it more like, if I'm going to keep a jacket or t shirt or whatever, I want to keep the ones that are the most decorated. That might not be for everyone, but the way I see it is if I have to wear a jacket I'm going to wear the one with the embroidered palm trees on it instead of a plain one lol. It might not be for everyone but if you want to stay bold with your fashion it can still be done with fewer items

As regards natural laundry detergent, I'm familiar with Charlie's Soap (only the powder - the other formulations have nasty stuff in them), Branch Basics, and Molly's Suds. I always use natural detergent (Charlie's Soap powder is my favorite, but Branch Basics works well, too; haven't tried Molly's Suds, but I've heard it's great) because I am allergic to literally all chemical cleaners/detergents (chlorine bleach is one of the worst), and I always use wool dryer balls because I'm allergic to dryer sheets and fabric softener (I like to add essential oil to my dryer balls, because 1) it gives my clothes a fresh scent when they come out of the dryer without all the harmful fragrance chemicals that I'm severely allergic to, and 2) it keeps my clothes from picking up any of the fragrance chemicals stuck to the drum from other people using fabric softener/dryer sheets/fragrance booster). Pro tip on the dryer balls - attach a large safety pin to each one, and every time the pin makes contact with the dryer drum, it will diffuse the static electricity from the ball, greatly decreasing the static-y-ness of the clothes when you go to pull them out of the dryer.

And still I got lost in thinking I have to look like other women I think look great, or that I should buy what all the influencers out there are telling me to. But thanks to Courtney and you guys I do realise it’s all about dressing for yourself, for your unique body type and colouring. It’s all about being ME. What looks great on someone else, might look weird and off on me. And if I pull out the clothes I wear the most, I think it’s even less than those 33 items 🎉❤ Keep up the good work, guys. It’s B Corp and leaping bunny certified, contains only ingredients safe for people and the environment (madesafe.org) and participates in 1% for the planet. Oh yeah, it works great! It’s a concentrated powder and can be bought in mostly recyclable canisters and refills in plain brown bags (think lunch sacks). MelioraMeansBetter.com. It comes unscented plus a few scents (100% organic) - I love the lemon, lavender, clove scent. Anyway ....... the smell of regular detergent makes me feel really sick now. Great podcast!

Idk. With my fashion style I ALWAYS get comments on my outfits. Everyone always notices. That's not why I dress a certain way but the deviance is always noticed. If I only wore 33 items, people would notice right away something changed. But I still don't have as many clothing items as the average woman. And I wear all of them. As long as you're using your items and they're bringing you joy, there's no reason to get caught up on a number 🤷🏻‍♀️ but to each their own.

Soulful simplicity. I love that title. Most of us prob do only wear 33 items in our wardrobe, esp if you don't count underwear, lounge wear, and workout clothes. Shoes and jewelry counting might make it more challenging for some but... Maybe channeling that energy elsewhere would be more meaningful.

What I have noticed there is a tendency among fashion bloggers to emphasize that if you are not dressed contemporary it is noticeable by others. If you wear clothing from 10 years ago, the cut is different even if it is timeless white shirt. If you cannot even get modern shirt can you be successful in other things. It's the least effort. If you look contemporary you have more success among your peers even though they don't tell you . They register it subconsciously. What is your take on this?

I disagree with Courtney that people don't care what you wear. They don't notice if you repeat outfits or items, but they do notice if you look nice and well presented or sloppy. Personally I notice if someone is literally wearing pajama pants or if a grown woman is wearing a printed T-shirt, jeans and converse. That's everyone's right, of course, but it does make a good impression when we wear well cared for, well tailored pieces that flatter our bodies and complexions. That's not about chasing fashion or being vapid. Clothes are not just about not being naked, they are pleasing to ourselves and others. I love 333 because you really get to wear your best quality, favourite clothes

I would say that if people judge you for what you wear, doing the challenge would help clean up not just your wardrobe, but the people in your circle. Who needs that kind of superficiality?

The Pareto principle states that for many outcomes roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of the causes (the “vital few”).[1] Other names for this principle are the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity.

How do you manage Projekt 333 in a land with four sessions while having hyperhidrosis on your whole body? I am suffering from that, mostly in the summer obviously. When it's over 28°C or i am stressed out, my medication don't work (so well). What should i do? I minimized half of my closet and last summer i missed stuff i could wear above 28°C :/

I agree that we can save time, money, and energy by simplifying our wardrobes. You make lots of good points in this video. However, I disagree with the oversimplification of the answer to Rachel's call. Being concerned with fashion and making a good first impression is not equal to wanting to be "trendy." I think you missed an opportunity to promote 333 still allowing personality and quality to show through. I also can recall several times when my first impression of someone was strongly affected by their clothing (both positive and negative). It sends a message that you care, or don't. I also have several friends and colleagues who comment/enjoy my fashion, AND we also have a deep connection. I don't appreciate the dismissive comments that people who care about appearances must be only superficial. I sincerely appreciate others' fashion without feeling bad about myself. That's a different mindshift than the one you discuss, but it is possible to admire sincerely without envying. Carefully curating is different than not caring.

I struggle with the impulse to throw everything out and start with a blank slate and design the “perfect “ capsule minimalist wardrobe. However, the whole point is to not spend resources on clothing! Any advice for working with what you already have in your closet ?

I lost a lot of weight and started with a clean slate. It was awesome I got to buy everything that I loved 😁. But I would consider myself and extreme minimalist I only own 18 items of clothing for all year round not including my socks, undergarments and I have 5 pair of shoes. I've really simplified my life and I've never been happier

Push everything to one side, then what you reach for goes back in on one side. Conversely, turn hangers around backwards, put them away right side, and then as time passes you'll notice what you're reaching for. Edit: in short, have patience. :) You could also put it all in a box giving you that immediate visual gratification.

I started with only the stuff in my closet (and there was a lot of it). The method I followed was picking 2-3 main colors (these ended up mostly being tops and dresses in my case) that all went together and making the rest be neutrals (mostly bottoms for me), then seeing what I had that fit the "everything goes with everything" (I literally put outfits together on hangers to get an accurate look to determine whether or not they went together); then once I pared down the first time, I did the reverse hanger method, which allowed me to pare down more. I had already decided my own personal style before I started, which also made it easier. There did end up being a few things that I loved the style or fabric of but for whatever reason either I didn't like the item itself or it was a color that didn't go with everything else - once I determined that I would indeed need to get a replacement for them (instead of being able to just donate them and call it done), I looked around at thrift stores first for the high quality pieces I was trying to replace them with, but when I went, I looked only for those items and wouldn't let myself get pulled into buying something else - it made me super picky, which helped in the long term. If I couldn't find what I was looking for in a thrift store, then and only then did I start looking at buying one new. I've pared down and tweaked it over the last few years based on what I actually wear, what I've wished I'd had in certain situations, and what I've needed for my new job, but that was the process I used to start. Wellness Mama dot com has a few articles about capsule wardrobes as well, and after reading articles on several different methods, that one resonated the best with me (which will differ from one person to the next) and I used that as my starting point (currently she only has kids' ones up, but she explained the theory well enough that I could take it and run with it and pretty easily apply it to my own situation as a young adult); she also addresses changing seasons with regards to capsule wardrobes as well. Hope that helps at least a little bit.

People do notice how you are dressed. I used to work in a manufacturing facility as a production worker so no need to dress up, good clothing would be ruined. The day before Christmas shutdown we were presented with Christmas bonus checks. I went to BonTon after work, I wanted to treat myself with some fancy perfume. As I approached the perfume counter a woman came rushing out literally screeching, "Can I help you?" I backed away shaking my head no. In the US if you look shabby you get treated that way.

Cleanliness and hygiene and simplicity always looks so much more stunning. My biggest BIGGEST pet peeve is seeing dirty shoes on fellow nursing students as a part of their uniform. To me is shows a lack of consideration to detail and cleanliness. I think it’s the same way with all clothing. Uncared for, stained, pilled, and sloppy looking clothing conveys that your character is sloppy. Sorry if this comes across as EXTREMELY superficial but it is peoples first impression of you.
